Generation Z

Those of Generation Z, our newest generation, can be counted on to have the most unsparing vision of this world they've inherited. Heirs to a future they've yet to imprint, their opinions must find an open ear. Their take on the world has importance and relevance, and so, will always find space and newsprint here in this column. They must be heard; they are the future. Let's take a listen:

— Ninety-seven percent of Gen Z voters rank the economy as one of the top three most important issues.

— Sixty-eight percent of Gen Z voters registered in their parents' district, even if they've since moved.

— Nineteen percent of Gen Z voters want Andrew Yang as the next president.

— Seventy-three percent of Gen Z voters supported the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

When given the choice of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Yang, Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump, and asked who they would vote for the next election, Warren led the pack with more than one-fifth of total votes. With a politically active and forward-thinking mentality, Generation Z is prioritizing the economy as one of the top issues influencing their voting. While the economy has been strong and this generation hasn't had difficulty finding jobs, fears of a potential economic recession do cause concern.

Now for the really important news: Fifteen percent of Gen Z doesn't acknowledge Feb. 14 as a holiday. (All shook up?) Giant teddy bears and chocolate-covered strawberries seem to be a thing of the past. More than half said they would rather engage in an activity or experience. Still, it's not time for tears: More than 15% of respondents said they would indeed celebrate it IF they hadn't been "ghosted" countless times! (This older-generational columnist translates that as "being stood up" and sighs ever so deeply.)

These are findings from EduBirdie's recent survey of 1,206 participants from Generation Z. The ghostwriting platform primarily serves a Generation Z audience and conducts regular studies to gain insights into the audience's thoughts and behavior. Not surprisingly, most of this generation plans to support more liberal candidates. A large number feel their votes won't impact the election but do look forward to seeing what happens in November. The majority (89%) will be voting absentee to make sure their voice is heard.
