Spring's Jean Pool

It's probably one of the first things you buy every season ... a new pair of jeans. Denim is a staple in most of our wardrobes, and this year there are plenty of ways to give the jean pool in your closet a splash of style with these updated takes on denim.

—Do denim on denim. Let's get this one cleared up first: Wearing denim coats, jackets and shirts with denim skirts and jeans is a big DO this year. This trend is not going to go away anytime soon, either. The fall 2016 runways were awash in all hues of denim blues.

—Take a short cut. Cropped jeans are a warm-weather favorite. This spring, the shorter, ankle-grazing jeans are one of the most popular ways to get your denim fix. Team them with figure-hugging long vests or jackets and chunky platform sandals or ankle booties. Choose a white pair of crops for unlimited versatility.

—Cool it with culottes. Another short take on jeans, culottes — especially high-waisted belted ones — are perfect for spring and summer when you want a dressed-up casual look without wearing longer pants. Substantial shoes like a thick-soled flatform are a must with culottes.

—Dress with flare. Whether you like your jeans cropped or on the long side, denim that has a little flare at the bottom is one of the best ways to add some newness to your wardrobe. Balance the wider legs with fitted tops or lightweight knits and slip-on high-heeled mules.

—Get distressed. Ripped, raw and rugged ... the coolest denim this year is all about the distressed look. Frayed, uneven hems are another major trend; ditto for faded favorites, too. Dress up your holey jeans and maxi skirts with peasant blouses and leather bomber jackets.

—Stick to skinny. The slim-leg jean or legging (jegging) jean is still a denim "do." This long, lean look is the perfect complement to voluminous tunics and even gauzy slip dresses. Cuff them for a stylish twist.

Pair with a pair of slide menswear loafers.

—Go for a romp ... romper, that is. This short one-piece denim delight is a playful way to welcome sunny days and even nights. And for even more casual occasions, try denim's newest darling ... the shortall — short overalls. Mix with tanks and tees and floral shirts for a bohemian vibe.

—Accessorize. And if you can't get enough denim to wear, then you can always shop the accessory aisle. From handbags to sandals to eyeglasses, belts and bangles, denim accessories will give your wardrobe a touch of the blues all year long.

—Embellish it. Paint it, tie-dye it, bead it, embroider it ... designers are decorating denim with artistic abandon. This is another trend that will make major news right into next fall. Pick up a statement piece now. You'll wear it forever ... because denim never goes out of style. Dive in!
