Clinton vs. Trump: Whose Busy Brain Could Use Some Rest?

John F. Kennedy — whose crippling back injury, Addison's disease and dependence on painkillers were hidden from the public for years — was the first U.S. president to make a big to-do over the importance of fitness and well-being.

His new frontier included an ambitious youth fitness program in schools, and he pushed it hard in his public talks in the '60s. (Sadly, youth fitness today has gone the way of the hoop skirt.)

"The strength of our democracy and our country is really no greater in the final analysis than the well-being of our citizens," JFK told the press on July 19, 1961.

Bingo! Which brings us back to last week's question: What about the well-being of citizens Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump? Which candidate walks the talk of a healthy lifestyle and which one colors his hair to match his corn dogs?

As my research showed, when it comes to smart eating, Clinton gets a

B plus and Trump gets a double bacon cheeseburger with a side of fries.

On the all-important subject of regular exercise — the single best health habit there is — Clinton works out three or four times a week, a mix of yoga, water aerobics, walking and strength training.

Trump thinks running for office is a sport. He was athletic as a younger man, but these days he makes time for two sports only — in his own words — golf and delivering speeches. (I'm not making make this up.)

But there's more to well-being than smart eating and regular exercise. So, let's continue this evaluation of the candidates, starting with their official medical summaries released last year:

THEIR DOCTORS SPEAK OUT.

"If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency," said Donald Trump's doctor just days after Politico reported that Trump ate poorly and didn't work out.

Dr. Harold Bornstein's four-paragraph evaluation of Trump's health is high on praise and low on objective test results. He did reveal that Trump takes a low dose baby aspirin every day as well as a statin to lower high cholesterol.

His lab test results were "astonishingly excellent," Dr. Bornstein concluded, offering no specifics. He considers Trump's physical strength and stamina to be "extraordinary," but again, no objective test results were offered. Clinton gets a good report, too, overall. She has completely recovered from her fall and concussion in 2012, her doctor, Lisa Bardack, reported in her four-page, detailed summary. Clinton takes Coumadin, a blood thinner, to prevent the reoccurrence of a blood clot, and she also takes a thyroid hormone for an underactive thyroid.

Neither of them has revealed how much they weigh. Their suit jackets do it for them.

SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL!

I couldn't find a reference to the number of hours Clinton sleeps, but I'm willing to bet she's up to date with her Arianna Huffington news feeds and knows very well that — to keep up her energy and mental prowess — she needs seven hours a night.

Not Trump. He bragged to a reporter that he's "not a big sleeper." "I like three hours, four hours," he said.

Trump may like three or four hours, but his brain doesn't. The mind needs sufficient rest so it can function and thrive. Trump is getting about 50 percent of the sleep his body needs.

Looking for an explanation for Trump's erratic behavior, emotional disconnect, rampant disremembering?

That's what sleep deprivation looks like. It's actually a form of torture, which might explain why Trump likes it so much.

WHO BELIEVES IN WORK-LIFE BALANCE?

"Don't confuse having a career with having a life," Clinton says.

"If you're interested in 'balancing' work and pleasure, stop trying to balance them. Instead, make your work more pleasurable," Donald says.

THEIR DARK SIDE. Clinton has a long-term association with Monsanto that makes her look bad to progressives who have labeled her the "bride of Frankenfood." Monsanto is notorious for squashing all efforts to label GMOs, and it pollutes the planet with poisonous chemical fertilizers.

And Trump may be just as strong as his doctor insists, but he's having a very hard time getting a grip on himself.

Darker still is his doom-and-gloom pessimism. Think about it: Have you ever seen Donald Trump laugh?
