ASK STACY

DEAR STACY: Did David Bowie ever succumb to the lure of licensing his music for TV commercials, or did he remain a purist in that regard? — Jesusminustryboys

DEAR JESUSMINUSTRYBOYS: To the contrary. The late, legendary rock star was into the commercial thing going all the way back to the 1960s, when he appeared in an ad called "Ice Cream Dream" — directed by none other than Ridley Scott. In 1987, Bowie and Tina Turner shilled for Pepsi on telly. Other Bowie commercial fare includes Kia, Louis Vuitton, XM satellite radio and my personal favorite, his French spot for Vittel water to "Never Get Old."

DEAR STACY: I just heard there is a remake of "Roots" coming out. Can you give details? When will it be on? Stars? — Veronica J., Bloomfield, NJ

DEAR VERONICA: No airdate has been announced as yet for the much-talked-about remake of the influential 1970s miniseries based on Alex Haley's acclaimed book tracing his family back to enslavement. This time around, English actor Malachi Kirby ("East Enders") plays Kunta Kinte (the role originated by LeVar Burton, one of the new "Roots'" executive producers). Other cast members include Laurence Fishburne, Anna Paquin, Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose, Derek Luke and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The new "Roots" will air on the History, A&E Network and Lifetime channels.

DEAR STACY: My friend says Olivia De Havilland is still living. What is her condition like? — JESSE F., Culver City, CA

DEAR JESSE: Good — at least, good enough to reportedly be working on her autobiography and looking forward to her big 1-0-0 birthday this July 1. According to an interview she gave to Entertainment Weekly last year, the Hollywood Golden Age double Oscar winner, who is also the last living star from "Gone With the Wind," lives in Paris, still does crossword puzzles, and doesn't get melancholy when watching that landmark film. "It's like a reunion" with her late costars, she said. Her sister and fellow Hollywood leading lady Joan Fontaine passed away in 2013, putting an end to their notorious feud.

DEAR STACY: Since Mary-Kate Olson and Ashley Olsen said no to doing "Fuller House," what's going to be done with Michelle Tanner? Will she be killed off? Played by someone else? — Wondering1

DEAR WONDERING1: Michelle, played by the Olson twins as a tot, will be "a presence" on the new show according to its producers — not seen, but explained away as "working on her fashion line in New York." Wink, wink. "Fuller House" does a gender flip of the original show, with newly-widowed mother of three boys D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure) being joined by her aspiring musician sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and her life-long best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) to raise her young brood. John Stamos, Bob Saget, Dave Coulier and Lori Loughlin guest star. It premieres Feb. 26 on Netflix.
