Information Overload

Q: In today's highly stressful world, it seems like everything is changing too quickly to keep up, but everybody always seems to have a strong opinion in any given conversation. While others seem to have definite viewpoints about everything, I find it difficult to sort through all of the information coming at me. With all the news out there, it's hard to make quick, common-sense judgments about issues. But the people around me seem to have no problem doing so. How can I avoid falling behind?

A: You aren't the only one who struggles to keep up. When looking at others, ask yourself how they come to conclusions so quickly and easily.

Many people look for information that confirms what they already believe and ignore information that contradicts their views of the world. Often, impatience leads us to form opinions based on our personal prejudices, regardless of any research, analysis or facts.

This method is tempting for many, regardless of age, sex or education level, because it simplifies complicated issues. Many individuals have already made up their minds about public issues and are prepared to pass quick and vocal judgment when prompted. Unfortunately, this tactic doesn't mean that they are better informed.

Thoughtfulness and quick judgment rarely go hand in hand. Instead of trying to process all the information that comes your way, practice thoughtfulness and slow down. Don't rush to judgment, but instead ask questions and be critical of your own prejudices.

Focus on the issues that are important to you, and keep an open mind. Seek a variety of different opinions and take time to think about the details.

Being more understanding of other viewpoints will help you connect with the world. If you still feel lost at sea, ask other people what they think.

I'm sure they'd love to tell you! — Doug

MAKING CHANGES

Q: My sister and I have two very different personalities. When she wakes up, she immediately becomes energized while I need at least two cups of coffee to begin my day. I'd like to be more like her but haven't been able to change.

Can I improve my habits?

A: Differences are normal, but you can always work to change your habits. It just takes a little effort.

The single best tool for change is a positive attitude. Positivity helps us achieve our dreams and improve our general well-being. You're unlikely to change if you keep beating yourself up for your flaws. Self-flagellation drains you of your energy.

Create a strategy to gradually change your behavior. Adjust your bedtime and address the obstacles in the way of waking up earlier. Replace any detrimental behaviors with healthier ones. Your attitude will help you stay on track.

Throughout the process, remind yourself of your goal and how it will affect your life. Celebrate your successes, even if they're incremental. Find something positive happening each day and wake up looking forward to it.

A positive attitude can make all the difference. You can do it! — Emma
