We Have a Choice

Tuesday morning, at 8:24 a.m., I was checking out of the local grocery store. As I was making my departure, the lady said, "Have a good day." I responded, "I've already had one — you do the same." Her response was, "Not today — I don't expect it to happen to me."

I was saddened by her remark because our expectations have a tendency to be fulfilled. Fortunately, we can make our expectations positive, rather than negative. The key is when you plan for something positive to happen, then prepare for something positive to happen, chances are much better that something positive will happen.

Last night, I planned today and I have been preparing all my life to make good things happen. Result: Before 6 a.m., I was in a productive mode and was busily working the plan. Later, my wife joined me for breakfast and we spent a delightful hour talking, eating and reading the paper together. All those things were planned the night before, so we expected them to happen today.

Many times when queried about an individual's performance, someone will say, "He failed to deliver — but what can you expect?" The implication is that here's an individual who cannot be depended upon to deliver what has been promised. That, too, is sad.

Fortunately, we do have a choice. Example: Twins were raised by an alcoholic father. One became a highly productive, law-abiding, effective citizen; the other became an alcoholic and a drag on society. The alcoholic brother explained that no one could expect anything else from him because he had an alcoholic father. The sober twin explained that you could not expect anything else from him, since his father was an alcoholic.

Message: Even though others have expectations of us, ultimately the choice is ours. Set your expectations high, then plan and prepare so those positive expectations will be fulfilled, and I'll see you at the top!
