The Curse of Incumbency

Comment

Walter Mondale won his first debate against Ronald Reagan in 1980.

John Kerry won his first debate against George W. Bush.

Mitt Romney won his first debate against Barack Obama.

When you win, you get lots of congratulations. When you lose, you get lots of advice. President Obama, I am absolutely certain, is getting lots of advice. The expectations for Romney will be higher in the next debate. Obama will be more passionate, more assertive and more engaged.

So why wasn't he that way on Wednesday night? Lots of reasons. Hindsight is 20/20.

My guess, watching last night's debate, is that Obama had taken the Hippocratic oath. He didn't want to "stoop" to the level of his opponent (challengers always get a bump from being on the same stage as the president), so he just plain avoided any tough criticism (say, of Romney's support for the Wall Street bailout and not for the auto industry bailout, or of his statement that the 47 percent of the electorate who depend on government entitlements (like seniors and veterans and the disabled) are "victims" who don't take "responsibility." But in almost every debate, the more aggressive candidate is seen as the winner if he doesn't go way over the top. Obama debated like a guy who has a bigger lead than he has.

And there's more. As a guy who has made some pretty big gaffes, Romney came in with low expectations and beat them. Obama, supposedly the great communicator, came in with high expectations even though his oratorical skills tend to shine in front of huge audiences and not when he's straight into the camera. Romney has debated dozens of times in the past year. The president hasn't debated in four years.

The polls will almost certainly give Romney a bump.

This will definitely help him raise money. But there are many conservatives who are overplaying their hands here, claiming this debate was a game changer the way Bush's second debate against Michael Dukakis was ("if someone raped and killed your wife...") and Reagan's only debate against Carter was ("there you go again..."). If conservatives push hard enough, they could land Romney in the same position Obama was in this time: facing expectations he can't meet while coming under even greater scrutiny for his statements.

Losing the first debate is a problem that can be turned around — as both Reagan and George W. Bush did. Getting creamed in the second or only debate — as Carter and Dukakis did — is far more likely to be fatal.

So, Romney supporters: Don't pick out those White House curtains yet.

Obama supporters: Don't give up on your man.

Romney advisers: Tell your friends to tone down the rhetoric.

Obama advisers: Don't be afraid to speak truth to power. The president deserves to be criticized, hard as that is to do when you're sitting in a room with the president of the United States.

And for those who spend their time criticizing the "liberal media," take a listen to what MSNBC had to say last night. Their criticism of the president was as over the top as the boasts and predictions many conservatives are making today.

For all of the email I've been getting today — and I've been getting plenty — no one has said they've changed their mind about who to vote for. Disappointed or not, Obama has a solid command of his base. And if he didn't close the deal with swing voters last night (and he certainly didn't), he also didn't liberate Poland, as Gerald Ford did in 1976. If you watched last night, I can't imagine you won't want to see what happens in the next episode.

Bottom line: Stay tuned.

BEST DEBATE JOKES:
-OBAMA: My dog ate my notes and then I ate my dog.
-It turned out that Romney actually WAS debating an empty chair.
-Even though it was their anniversary, Michelle went home with Romney last night.
-Romney's garbage man now even says he's voting for him.

A rout, Agincourt, Little Big Horn, a masacre, a slaughter. LOL !

But according to the left, the brainless obama zombies, it was the altitude, it was some mystery thing in the background, it was the lack of teleprompter, it was just that he is not a good debater, it was because he doesn't watch MSNBC, it was because he wanted to go easy on Romney, it was whatever bs the leftists will make up.

No. It was becasue he was challenged and has been at last exposed before 50 - 60 millions.

Little boy barack, the community organizer, the amateur, the empty suit, the empty chair, the empty podium, the empty vessel, the spoilt afirmative action sulking, slinking, petulant indolent brat, for whom the media covered for four years was tested and found absent, was tested and found wanting, was tested and failed miserably and in trying to run from his abysmal record had to lie and whine and cry and plead with Leher to please move on to another subject. What a pathetic picture it was. That was supposed to be a president of the United States? God help us all!

He got his miserable a$$ handed to him last night. LOL! What a fool ! What a fraud ! What a waste of space ! What a total failure he is ! He even managed to out Carter, Carter. LOL again.

Move out now barry boy and let the adult Romney take over.

Do it now barry boy. End the utter embarrassment to all that you are and do it for America !

My take on Obama -
He's the real 'Manchurian Candidate,' sounds great when the puppeteer writes his speechs for him and put them on a teleprompter. He truly lives the life of a king, eating well and traveling like a wealthy tourist but he's being used by the hard core progressives( his advisors and his czars). All is readily apparent when he is confronted with direct opposition and no one to pull the strings. Quite pathetic but truly disturbing.

Basically, Susan is saying that Obama took a thumping, but the battle is far from over. She's right. I've been saying this for weeks, don't get overconfident. This race is so close the difference is within the margin of error. And Obama has the lamestream media on his side and they have even Romney supporters convinced that Obama will win. I only caught part of the debate, thinking I'll catch up on the highlights later. And besides, South Park was new. But after all the buzz this debate has created, I'm not skipping out on another one.

The comprehensiveness of the defeat barry boy suffered on Wednesday night is illustrated in the "the fix is in" dishonest, fudged, employment figures issued today. We are supposed to believe that the addition of a paltry 114,000 mostly part time jobs, a number of jobs that does not even match the number of jobs needed to stand still, caused the uneployment rate to drop 3 percentage points. Give me a break. This Chicago based thuggish corrupt lying deceiving adminstration thinks we are all idiots and dupes.
However, in this regard, namely when it is talking to the obama zombies (i e Lipka and his ilk) who will be sucked in by such nonsense it is not wrong.
Be prepared for the utterly dishonest, the knives are out for Romney, the in the tank for barry boy media to run with this patently dishonest propoganda bullsh*t.

I was watching the debate with some friends of mine and one of the ladies noticed that just after the opening handshake, Mitt Romney went back to his podium and appearred to take some notes out of his pocket and put them on his pocium UNDER the paper that was already there for each candidate. Then Romney appeared to later move that paper to the top of his notes and when he made his four point answer to one question he then looked down as he said POINT ONE paused ever so imperceptibly and reeled of point one. Then he moved on to POINT TWO and did exactly the same thing, With that very perceptable paiuse to silently read that point and then gave the second point, Romney then said POINT THREE, Looked down for a brief second at his notes and gave out with point three. Then he said POINT FOUR, again he looked down and after reading what was on the paper he gave the final point.
I thought that Elaine was nuts when she mentioned it to all of us, but I later went back and looked closely at what she was talking about. There is no doubt that Mitt Romney took notes out of his pocket It was NOT a handkerchief. I have looked at this over and over. It is clear that Romney broke the rules of the debate. But that aside, his statements during the debate bordered on the incredible. For twenty prior Republican debates , Romney espoused a 20% tax cut across the board which would result in five trillion less revenue for the government. Then incredibly during this debate he disavowed the five trillion dollar figure. And said he did not support such and idea????
Finally Romney again stated that he supported VOUCHERCARE and wanted to scrap Obamacare completely and then right within the space of twenty minutes stated that he would keep the provision on pre-existing conditions. WHAT ?????? It is a good thing I still have all my teeth or I would have swallowed my dentures. How can you toss out Obamacare in its entirity and then turn around and say you will keep this and that and the other??? It did not make sense. My head was spinning Oh, by the way, at the end of the debate and AFTER the final handshakes, Romney can be seen going back to his podium to retrieve the notes he earlier had taken from his pocket.....Go back and watch the tape. My friend was right. But then women seem to notice little things like that.

Re: robert lipka
Point proven. Lipka is a confirmed member of the idiot class. Cuckoo ! Cuckoo ! Cuckoo ! Not only will he regurgitate without thought anything that obama says, he is delusional in the company of idiot delusional women.

The big $5 trillion {over ten years for the dumba$$ libs out there that might just think it is for one year when gross federal income per annum from income tax amounts to just $2.1 trillions from everyone conmined} lie comes from a study by TPC , a study that has been roundly criticized by many others as flawed in the presumptions it makes, inaccurate and misleading. Still what does truth matter to a delusional liberal.

Seems that poor Lipka has not yet heard Cutter, another delusional woman and the liar in chief for the actual liar in chief.

On CNN today she was forced to admit that the claimed $5trillion revenue loss for the benefit of the rich was in fact a whopping lie.

Partial transcript for Likpa as he missed it.

Erin Burnett, CNN host: So you're saying if you lower them by 20% you get a $5 trillion tab, right?

Stephanie Cutter: It's a $5 trillion tab. (Lie)

Burnett: But then when you close deductions it's not going to be anywhere near $5 trillion, that's our analysis.

Cutter: Well, okay, stipulated. (Truth at last)

Yet the liar in chief and his other little fellow liars and followers continue the falsehood. Liar Lipka ? or just plain stupid ? or both ?

Joe it was clearly a hankerchief with notes written on it. HAHA. Hey, if you can't beat em, might as well make up crap about em right. Obama will be better prepared next time, but as Romney made very clear, the facts are not on his side. I think Romney will win every debate from this point on, but this is the last one that the lamestream media will admit defeat on.

Re: Chris McCoy
Agreed !

Still the biggest lie over the last few days was not the $5 trillion revenue loss from Romney lie which has now completely de bunked .

The only person actually connected to a real $5trillion loss is barry boy who has actually squandered $5trillions plus in just under 4 years.

The big lie is unemployment rate lie.

Only a fools like Lipka and his ilk will be sucked in by it or will peddle it knowing it to be a sham.

Desperately seeking something after the a$$ kicking he took on Wednesday the liar barry boy and the coruptocrats of the Dept of Labor magically found a 0.3% drop in unemployment in the month before a general election and did so with the addition of a tiny 114,000 jobs a number of jobs added which was less than those added in the previous months. Surprise surprise! No ! But obvious fraud on the American people. Yes!

Wonder how the unemployment rate could drop by the highest percentage in 29 years when the underemployment rate per U6 remained at 14.7%, when average job growth in 2012 averaged 146000 per month which is less then the average for 2011 which was 153,000
.
What the liar in chief (aided and abetted by a lying Labor Sec) did was to leave out of the equation those falling off the register because they have given up looking for work, those working part time but yet looking for full time employment, those whose unemployment benefits have run out and are now forgotten by him. screw them says barry boy they just make me look bad.

While a net 200,000 so called new jobs have been taken up over the last few months over 700,000 working age people have in the same period given up and switched to welfare.

If those people were counted the real unemployment rate would be about 10.7%. Still who caes how dishonest it is. Its an election month and there are inbeciles like Lipka out there that will buy into it because barry boy lied and said it.

And barry boy is actually happy and gloating about this? Barry boy is happy that we have the lowest percentage of population working in decades? Happy that 47 millions are on food stamps?

Let barry boy try to sell that happiness to those non parasites actually looking for work ,to new college grads in the unemployment line, to small business owners who might like to hire but cannot because of barry boy's taxing and regulatory obstacles and to those families looking for work and struggling because of his utter mismanagement of the economy!

I just hope he tries to sell it in the next debate. I see another a$$ whooping coming. Maybe he should just send the empty chair, could do no worse than barry boy did last wednesday or has done since 2009. LOL!

Seriously? The President of the United States defeated by a single page of crib notes? A simpler explanation is that there was something lacking in the individual who was debating Mr. Romney. Behold, the emperor has no clothes... (Seriously, the use of conspiracy theories to explain unpleasant facts is a classic logical fallacy.)

On a less conspiratorial note, Ms. Estrich wrote:

Nothing truer has been written about this debate. This election is still up for grabs. Obama needs to get serious about wanting to be President and Romney needs to keep his guard up. The worse thing the Republicans can do now is underestimate what Obama can do. Even a mediocre performance in the next debate will be hailed as 'brilliant' by his true believers. I'm hoping that Romney will stay one step ahead of the President and his advisors in the next debate and keep Obama off balance. But who knows...? This is going to be interesting...

The title of the piece by Estrich is The Curse of Incumbency. Maybe a more appriopriate title would be The Incumbent is a Curse.

You spoke trulky when you said "The worse thing the Republicans can do now is underestimate what Obama can do"

No better example than the desperation, the fraud and the deceit perpetrated through the jobs numbers, Jack Welsh said it best when he observed that Chicago can't debate so fix the numbers or have them fixed by his drones in the Labor Dept who "analyse" phone call data from which the unemployment rate is fudged.

Also watch the cover up in Libya, watch the illicit non reportable campaign donations. watch Axelrod and his goons instructing his foot soldiers of the media to continue the Libya cover up and to attack Romney on every front with bogus reporting. Watch bogus polls. Watch voter fraud on a massive scale through barry boy's ACORN and SEIU

Watch for lies lies and more lies from the obama campaign aided and abetted by a corupt media.

Watch for "wag the dog" military action, putting the lives of our young men and women of the armed services in danger because the empty chair cannot defend an abysmal record.

Yes barry boy can and will do all of the above, he can dodge and runand lie and lie again but he cannot hide the fact that as has been said before he is a stumbling stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure of a president and an America hating enemy within.

Earlier this morning I was looking back at something I put together in 2009 shortly after barry boy became president and something I posted on this site then.

It is as follows

BARAK HUSSEIN OBAMA is the Affirmative Action President. He is an incompetent, race baiting, psychotically narcissistic, infanticide enabling, Islam pandering, Israel hating, indolent, Marxist, blame America first, sociopathic congenital liar masquerading as a legitimate POTUS. He consorts with rabid jew haters, home grown terrorists, Chicago-Demo-Corrupt-o-crats and convicted mobsters. His Administration is simply Lies and Corruption Inc that will hand billions of taxpayer dollars to his bundlers and backers. He gives credence to and is guided by uber leftist liberal fascists who with other America hating “progressives” like Sorros and the openly seditious and treasonous Democratic House and Democratic Senate, aided by Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac and an incompetent FED, deliberately engineered and deliberately perpetuated the financial meltdown in order to push a rabid socialist and redistributionist agenda. Obama is truly the “enemy within” determined to ruin America in true “Cloward and Piven” style by overloading entitlement spending in order to destroy its economy. He will deliberately prolong the present recession and will expand it in order to achieve a full and lasting global depression. He is already repaying his extreme leftist masters to whom he is indebted, he will grow Government exponentially, will force worthless Government make job schemes and programs which will become a permanent and crippling drag on the productive private sector which he hates. He is sucking up to the worthless SEIU and public service and teachers unions for which we and our children and their children will pay and pay and pay. He will nationalize banks and industries. He will try to nationalize 401Ks and or other pensions. He will redistribute wealth to the parasites and will actively engage in reparations and in redistributing justice by nominating the worst kind of activist radical liberals to the Supreme Court. He will steal wealth to socialize healthcare. The State Department, under his watch, funds and panders to terrorist Muslim groups. The EPA is presently riddled with environmental extremists hell bent on eliminating human activity and jobs. He will end free speech, will attacked the second amendment, will degrade national security and will instrumental in turning the middle east over to Islamists. He will starve and will continue to starve the US of home grown energy. Unthinking cult disciples and moronic guilt ridden whites, Gucci liberals (wearing him like a fashion accessory), nihilist progressives, clueless soccer moms mindlessly aping Oprah and Whoopi, liberal elites and hand out seeking moochers sucking on the taxpayer tit, in an act of collective insanity, elected a false messiah with an appropriately a**hole shaped logo and banal slogans like hope and change. They got what they voted for but will get what they asked for, to wit, unconscionable crippling debt, rampant corruption, radical socialism, record unemployment, rampant inflation, a great depression and the abject appeasement of those who would kill them and their families. The oval office is no place for vermin like Obama.

In 2009 I got it entirely right about barry boy.

True Joe, you did get everything right, but was it really that hard? All you had to do was look at his shady past. BHO is the least vetted president ever. On the other hand, everything in Romney's past matters to the lamestream media. And the fact that they have to stretch so much and lie to come up with anything really goes to show how clean Romney's past is.
Joe and Old Navy, have you guys seen the Obama phone lady video? If not, you need to youtube it. It really gives you a good picture at the kind of people that have Obamas back.

Not hard to see at all Chris. One seeks and takes no credit for any great insight or for articulating what ws even then obvious. One only had to take a look. It was as plain to see as are barry boy's jug ears. Indeed truth be told, I am saddened, for the sake of this Republic that the prediction was so easy and so correct.

The phone lady is not the only kind that have barry boy's back add the trades unions, and as identified above, the wilfully blind, the obama cult disciples, moronic guilt ridden whites, the Gucci liberals, nihilist progressives, the clueless soccer moms, brainwashed college indoctrinated single women, liberal elites and just plain imbeciles like Lipka.

Oldtimer, but is Lipka a liberal? He told us eariler that he voted for McCain in 08. So is he an independent? I find it odd that someone would vote against Obama in 08, at the height of his "hope and change" brainwashing power, yet now be a supporter. I have encountered the opposite. So many people that were Obama fans let down by his terrible preformance in office. The best person to explain this to us is Mr. Lipka himself. So I have to ask, what about Obama has inspired you in his term in office?

I find it amusing that you have placed Obama in the column and the company of Reagan And George W Bush, opposite Mondale and Kerry. Very astute to place Obama in the company of the right wing candidates, where he belongs, and as the inheritor and continuer of the Bush judicial policy. Obama really does model himself after Reagan, for his real allegiance is always with Wall Street, the War Machine, and the politics of fear, all Reagan staples.

To this extent only Pierotti is correct. The one and only success in the history of this obaminable administration is the killing of bin laden which was brought about directly by the continuing of policy set in place by President Bush and for which little or no credit is due barry boy. No credit is due for simply doing one's duty. Rather it is critism and worse that is rightly due for failure to perform a duty.

Just a point of clarification........I did vote for John McCain in the last presidential election. I did that out of respect for his military service to this country. At the time Obama was an unproven commodity. For me the choice was fairly clear. By making that choice, I went against the grain of the thinking of a lot of Americans who obviously were tired of the antics of the Bush/Cheney administration. Frankly, I did not see the election as a referendum on Bush/Cheney. Obviously, I was wrong.......very wrong. The American public hated George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who did NOT keep us safe. (Every time I see Liz Cheney on TV saying that the Bush Cheney administration kept us safe I regard that as her spitting in the faces of all those who lost loved ones on 9/11 and then in the Irag war.)
How did I come to change my mind? By carefully watching the things that this president has done. His foreign policy has been flawless. Contrary to the constant lie by the right-wingers that we are not respected in the world, the statements of the British prime minister and many other world leaders belies that bogus claim. Then there is the obvious salvation of the American auto industry. Incredibly even Mitt Romney acknowledged that the industry was saved and then tried to take credit for that slavation. Romney quickly dropped that claim when he was widely ridiculed for that insane statement.
Then there is the solid performance of the DOW which has gone from 6,200 at the beginning of the Obama Admin to 13,500 or more than double. Anyone with a 401K or other retirement account has more than doubled their net worth. Many state pension funds that lost their ass ets are now solvent again.
31 straight months of Job growth when we were bleeding jobs at a horrific rate at the end of the Bush Admin. Of course, the right-wingers are now nit-picking that the unemployment rate should be near 5.8 % ???
And finally to the thing that did it for me. I lost a friend in the Lockerbie bombing. A wonderful stamp dealer from Philadelphia who was beloved by all who knew him. When Obama, who many accused of leading from behind , got Khaddaffy without the loss of a single American life, that plus the Bin Ladin Killing locked me in to respecting this president. He has certainly done his job.

Alternate realities are fine in science fiction. However, they have no place in politics. I could rebut Lipka's laundry list of accomplishments at length. I'll leave that bit of fun to others. One claim however stands out as a classic example of this administrations claims for success and really irritates me. Specifically:
"Obama, ..., got Khaddaffy without the loss of a single American life"

The Libyan revolution took over six months to play out from beginning to end. The bulk of the fighting and dieing was done by Libyans. Almost all the aid from the west (either direct or indirect) came from the French and British. We sat on our hands and did practically nothing to help the insurgents beyond wishing them well. However, once the hard work was finally accomplished, the Obama administration stepped up and claimed the credit for something that it was watching from the sidelines while sitting on its hands. (I guess the Obama motto is "Carpe Creditatum".) It is just so typical of this administration that when the good news arrives it immediately claims credit for it, regardless of whether they really had anything to do with it. Soon they will be claiming credit for the sun rising each morning. Or maybe they'll claim something really improbable like victory in the first debate.

Let me be blunt. The Libyan revolution, whether good or bad, is a Libyan/French accomplishment. The US had absolutely nothing to do with it. If we had gotten involved, would it have taken us 6 months to subdue a country that is 4 times the size of Massachusetts with about a tenth of the population? (It took less than a month to essentially overrun Iraq , a much tougher and more heavily armed opponent). By letting that war drag on interminablly instead of ending it with one sharp blow, we helped ensure that the total casualties for the conflict were maxed out. Really impressive!

I'm sorry, but Libya rates right up there with the Nobel Peace Prize as a Obama accomplishment. Both were 'earned' by essentially merely existing.
