Farewell
Dear Larry: You are the sanest man in America! I look forward to your columns because I ALWAYS agree with your answers. Great work! Thanks for speaking the simple truth about all issues — racial, political, parental, common sense, etc.
I often wonder where personal responsibility has gone in this country. So many have their hands out, want to blame others, and want to bring race into the equation.
Many seem most passionate about taking more, more, more from others and the government. Where did hard work and personal reward go? Keep up the good work! And by the way, I like the eyeglasses you wear in the photo on creators.com; the picture in my local paper is from the '70s, I think! — Angie
Dear Angie: Thank you for the kind words. It was readers like you who encouraged me to keep writing this column for more than 20 years. I know you said to "keep up the good work," but I have decided it is time for me to retire. This is my last column.
I want to say goodbye to all my loyal readers. It is with a certain amount of sadness that I put down my pen. (Oops, I am dating myself. I should have said "turn off my computer.")
I know that many people are curious about why I would stop. I have numerous reasons. First of all, I have a very busy schedule. I am the pastor of a church, and it has been steadily growing. The demands are becoming greater and greater.
Second, I am a counselor, and that occupation has grown much more than I ever expected. The county where I reside has hired me to take on counseling court-appointed drug offenders.
Third, I am a professor. This job is not a full-time one, but it does add to my commitments.
Fourth, I am getting up in age. God has blessed me with 67 years of life. There is so much more I want to do while my health is still good. My wife of 46 years and I want to see more of this world. Being committed to a weekly column limits our ability to get away.
Fifth, I am a metal artist, and there are still many commissions that need my time.
Sixth, I am thoroughly disgusted with the Obama administration. It is my belief that it is taking the country in a negative direction regarding race relations. I was hopeful that President Obama would be a positive force for making things better in America.
I was so sure we were headed in the right direction that I went out on a limb and predicted that race soon would become irrelevant and that socio-economics would be the population divider. I was wrong.
This president has a chip on his shoulder, and when one is attuned to attitudes — as I am — it is obvious. This would not be such a problem, except "guilt-ridden whites" and sympathetic minorities continue to keep him propped up. They make excuses for his behavior, and nothing will change until he and other like-minded people are taken to task for their misguided position.
This leads me to my final reason for closing my computer.
I have the wrong attitude for fostering change and writing this column. It is time for me to censor myself and get a grip.
To all my friends, I bid you adieu. Keep me in your prayers.

Sorry to see you go, Larry. I'll miss your wise perspective, but I understand your reasons. I didn't know you were a pastor or counselor, but now that you mention it, it really shows through in your writing.
"This president has a chip on his shoulder, and when one is attuned to attitudes — as I am — it is obvious. This would not be such a problem, except "guilt-ridden whites" and sympathetic minorities continue to keep him propped up."
It's maddening to watch these people tear our country apart with phony allegations of "racism" as well as make excuses for a pathetic lack of leadership from the White House. The racial angle is quite frankly the least of Obama's failures.
Many of those people are the same ones who comment here week after week, and try to take you to task for writing common sense that should be obvious to all. I would imagine you're pretty tired of hearing from them and from others who simply refuse to "get it."
You didn't even mention the Obama administration's reckless spending, draconian & unwanted takeover of our healthcare system, squandering of American credibility abroad, rudderless foreign policy, or complete and total rudeness to its domestic critics. With unemployment still at record highs, gas prices off the charts, the housing market a mess, and a total lack of coherent foreign policy, he'll be "out of there" in 2012 for sure.
Has anyone here been watching developments in Libya? Where is the outcry from Obama voters...that our government is engaged in an illegal, immoral, unjust war, bombing defenseless brown people in order to steal their oil, getting us involved in an expensive open-ended quagmire which was entered into without UN authorization or Congressional approval? Where are the hordes of antiwar protestors calling for the president to be impeached or worse?
Imagine if Bush had done anything like this...instead of showing as he did why a war was in our national interest, establishing clear goals, obtaining Congressional approval, citing 17 UN resolutions, and assembling a wartime coalition of 27 countries? I miss Bush's brave & principled leadership, and I suspect I'm not the only one.
May God be with you and your other pursuits, Larry.

Gimme a break. You seem to think that anyone who doesn't agree with you is Satanic. If the only politician of which you'd approve is one that agrees with you 100%, then, well, don't hold your breath.
If you want to improve race relations (human relations, in fact), consider that the world is a complex place, that we have nuanced views and positions on a multitude of topics, and that all members of any minority group do not necessarily subscribe to the same views on everything...but that some among us are still interested in talking to each other, to learn each other's views, learn to respect those with whom we disagree, and forge some common ground.

Larry,
I too will be very sorry to see you go. You have provided a fair, astute view of race relations which, frankly, I don't very often see. I especially would not have expected to see it from an African-American man who is apparently old enough to remember the days when racism was far worse than it is today. You are a conservative, and that takes courage, since it is often maligned by other African-Americans. Most of all, you are a true gentleman. You are fair and respectful to those who write in to you, even those who don't return the favor. And I admire your efforts in helping young people to make something of themselves. You persist in your work, even though the odds seem to be against you, and that takes real character.
I will miss you, Larry. But please, keep on doing what you're doing. Our country needs people like you. Don't ever give up.

Larry,
I've read, appreciated, and enjoyed your columns in my local newspaper (The Fayetteville Observer) for many years. I'm sorry that you feel that you need to retire, particularly since, from my viewpoint, you're still a young man. It's also noteworthy that our present administration has done incredible damage to race relations in our nation, and your common sense advice in that area has been of great value. I wish you continued success in all your future endeavors.

I wasn't going to comment until I saw a couple of the negatives. Larry, I often disagreed with you, but I'm glad I heard your point of view. For my taste, you over-politicized your column and, many times, disappointed my hopes of simply hearing about the experiences and viewpoint of blacks (not that I delude myself there's unanimity there). On the other hand, I certainly see some of your points--some of which have also been made to me verbally by black friends.
Sometimes the person you disagree with gives you a lot of food for thought. Thanks for that, and good luck in your ongoing work.

Larry,
You have provided readers with many years of wisdom and advice and I will truely miss your column. You are leaving for the right reasons, you need time your yourself, family and community.
As a pastor, I hope you do not give up teaching that color should not be an issue, that we must continously work as a nation, instead of divided races. You always taught that in your columns. Unfortunately, this President has put our country back decades with his own bias, entitlement attituded, socialist behavior. He has divided this country and the races. If I voice my opinion over my objection of what he is doing to this country, I am slammed as a racist.
We still need people like you Mr. Meeks to be a voice of reason and make up for the Obama's of our great nation. If not in your columns, but in the pulpit, classroom and the community. It's just a dog-gone shame you are not in the political arena, we need more people like you with common sense to lead our city, state and federal government.
God bless you Larry, I for one, will miss you in the papers!

Thank you Larry for the many years of unbiased opinion, you are to be applauded for printing what many people of color have known for the last two years regarding Barry Hussein Obama, I too thought the age Obama would break down racial barriers, instead I'm afraid that he has set back racial equality gains by at least 35 years, Obama while President, has repeatedly used the race card, circumvented the constitution, used underhanded methods to pay off political favors, closed down message boards who have criticized him,and his administration, has repeatedly flipped flopped on national issues, is destroying the U.S. with unfettered spending and printing of money, and finally, never assuming blame for his mistakes, he has shown the whole world that he is nothing but a man child, and needs to be removed from office in two years.

Good luck with the counseling. With all the mental institutions closing their doors, there'll be a lot of needy people out on their own.
Secondly, domestic violence and family homicide is on the rise. I see more and more articles about men who lose their jobs, become depressed, and kill their families.
Your church can keep a whole neighborhood afloat if you make them all productive. Why no teach metal sculpture to the teenagers in your church? You can teach them to make wrought-iron fences for houses.
Food co-cops are also a great activity for a church, especially with the price of food going up.

I'm sorry to see you leave. I understand your reasons why. It is nice to read your views and to be openly honest. I felt like many times and even in the comments here which is enough to drive anyone away that it is hard to discuss race. But your view is refreshing.
There are so many other things I want to say but sadly time is a factor and I hope that I see something of you in the future.

One of my favorite Larrys is retiring from only one of his many professions. Please write something sometime even though you can't keep up your weekly column. If you want something done, ask a busy person. You have pointed out many things about the black community that I was not aware of. I don't see you as biased, only having an educated and considered opinion. There are plenty of the other kind out there and we need the voice of reason to get us thinking. Enjoy your reitrement and may God bless you with many years.

Dear Mr. Meeks, I will greatly miss your column and hope that you will at least write on occasion. It seems you have plenty to do, but once a writer always a writer, I think, and I hope to see you in print again someday, somehow. You are always thought provoking, and THAT is really NEEDED, now as always.
Good luck to you and yours, and have a blessed time doing whatever you really love to do.
Sincerely,

Mr. Meeks,
I am sorry to see you go, as you offered an important perspective. As a white individual who has a diverse population of friends, I have been discriminated against quite often, by individuals who wouldn't consider it discrimination simply because it happened to someone who was white. Reading your column allowed me to realize that it wasn't me and that what they were doing was wrong: discrimination is wrong, regardless of the race of the person committing it. Discriminating against someone because an individual may have been discriminated against by someone else in the past is never the answer, and it is never justified. Thank-you for helping enforce that thought.
I am sorry, however, to see your attitudes and comments about President Obama. We may disagree with his politics, however that doesn't necessarily mean that because he differs in politics with us that he has made a negative impact on race relations in this country. This country used to be a country that encouraged diverse opinions. Now, it seems we demonize the other side if they don't agree with us. This has to stop. We need to return once more to discourse and debate to discuss issues, not demonization. I find it sad that because we disagree with a president's politics, he or she can be accused of all sorts of evils. Mr. Obama hasn't destroyed race relations, nor has he destroyed this country. After eight years of Republican rule, he simply took the country back to the middle, where many people were happy to see it go. You can disagree with the direction he took, or his politics, but please, don't demonize him and make him responsible for every evil under the sun, including racism. That doesn't make for productive discourse.
I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, Mr. Meeks. You will be a success in whatever you continue to do, as you were with this column. Thank-you for offering us all a different perspective.

Mr. Meeks, I am sorry to see you go. I've appreciated your balanced views even though a lot of your readers and posters didn't. I agree with you about Obama's performance but I always knew he was going to make things worse and not better. Many times when he spoke off the cuff he said something offensive and stupid. He doesn't have the experience or political cash he needs to run this country effectively. Plus, just the fact that he thrived in Chicago politics should have said it all. I'm from Chicago and I would never put a Chicago politician in the White House. That's just pure stupid. In regards to Obama's skin color I think people voting for him based on that is disgusting, especially when you add in the fact that if he had darker skin not even blacks would have voted for him. I don't know why the black community is so self-loathing but the human race is one of free will and I feel no guilt for being white or the choices made by others. In fact, I could care less about skin color - I care about character and I'm going to miss yours. Good luck to you.

As one of your many Canadian readers may I say enjoy your retirement! Many people put it off and die without having any fun. We are travelling as we can afford and thoroughly enjoying our granchildren and families. Having lost many friends and loved ones before their time , we realized we needed to stop and small the roses and see the places we dreamed of NOW not later. We will miss your wisdom and balanced view of the world but I'm sure your new friends in new places wii benefit. BON VOYAGE

So sorry to see you retire. I have enjoyed your column and agree with most of your views. I was raised in the South during a time when desegregation was just opening up schools. I've always had friends of all races and never looked at them as black, white, Asian, Native American or whatever. They were just friends. In college, I was the "token" vanilla kid in a group of bi-racial friends. Not just black/white bi-racial, but Hawaiian-Black, Native American-Asian, Hispanic-Scotch. All kinds of combinations. We all joked about the day when we were all so "Inbred" that race would be irrelevant. I still look forward to that day. The color of one's skin should be just as unimportant as hair color or eye color. People should be judged on their character, not skin color. Everyone should be proud of their heritage and keep the beliefs of the culture in which they grew up, but race should never be an excuse for discrimination.
Best wishes in all of your endeavors! I hope that you continue your teaching, both in the pulpit and the classroom. Please continue to encourage people to broaden their horizons, take responsibility for their actions and treat everyone fairly. If everyone would follow those rules, I think we would all be better off. Enjoy your travels and the extra time with your wife and family. Thank you for everything! Good luck!! Beth

Dear Larry: I have thoroughly enjoyed your column for at least the last two years. Maybe longer. I lost track of the exact number of months as I have gone on with admiration for your writing ability and your thoughts and your ability to think things through processes. In my book, you have been sensitive, accurate, articulate and, yes, forceful and EVERY day much like a breath of fresh air. I tell myself that I think I represent all citizens of Utah when I compliment you for how you have been wording your responses to others and expressing your own points of view. Most Utahns are conservative people and we like to spend our time looking for solutions instead of searching for problems and finding fault. Your written expressions tell me that you are one of us and you certainly would be welcome in our small University town. I wish you continued good luck in all you do. Keep up the good work and write something every so often. Posted by Jones in Cedar City, Utah Wednesday, March 30, 2011

I did not vote for Obama, and I wouldn't have voted for him had his name been John Kerry or Al Gore! The only people who didn't vote for him because he is black are people who would have voted for him had he been white, namely liberals and Democrats. They must be the racists, not the conservatives!

Dear Larry, my wife and I have read your column for many years since moving to North Carolina from California. I certainly can understand your level of Washington frustration and the need to take a 'time out'. Notice I said 'Time Out' and NOT 'Retire'. We also had very high hopes for President Obama with his rise to the highest position in the Country. Unfortunately, he has significantly disappointed many of us and has harmed some very excellent American politicians of color, such as: Herman Cain, Allen West, Marco Rubio, and others. So, with this said, DON'T GIVE IN TO THE CHALLENGES THAT FACE ALL OF US; take a well deserved 'Time Out', regroup your mental being, and come back to all of us with your excellent commentary.

I'm getting fed up with the Obama administration too. He's not producing any results.
1. The BP oil spill was Obama's chance to stride in there and prove himself. But the way I see it, he did almost nothing.
2. The borders with Mexico are almost porous. He has the authority to use the Army to patrol the borders, but he won't.
3. He appointed an unqualified Judge, Sonia Satomayor, to the Supreme Court. Several of her rulings were overturned, which is not a good sign.
Obama keeps getting involved in things that are not on his turf, and ignores the things he has control over.

Why is this column still on here? Enough is enough. Plus, he has become a very bigoted and hateful person.

Why is this column still here. This man has become so hateful and racist over time, and he has not written a new column in months. I am tired of seeing him on here.

jajjaaj, MY attitude is just fine. I was discussing Larry Meeks'. He reminds me of Herman Cain, of whom I've heard it said that "He tells white conservatives what they want to hear about black people, so then they can say 'We're not racists, we like Herman Cain.'"

Thank you for your column. It os ironic that since these columns are being recycled, you have now said "farewell" about 10 times. You and Cher......

Hi Larry, Well, I finally found out what happened and why your column was no longer in my local newspaper. I miss reading what you have to say and really enjoyed the columns. Good luck on your future endeavors and God bless.
