About the Dog

Share Comment

There is a famous story (it may be apocryphal, of course) about Richard Nixon and his dog. No, I don't mean the Checkers speech, the one where Nixon saved his integrity by invoking his little dog, Checkers, and his wife's cloth coat. This one came later, after he lost, during the famous Bel Air fire. The story is that as he was fleeing his house, Nixon left his dog.

When it comes to friends, it's hard to beat a dog. Harry Truman, it is said, once was told that if you want a real friend in Washington, get a dog. But friendship — really, love — should be a two-way street.

I am the mother of three loving dogs: Judy Jarvis Estrich, Molly Isabel Estrich and Irving A. Estrich. Sometimes, being the worrywart that I am, I actually spend time thinking about how I would round up my dogs in the car in case there was a tsunami or a fire. It goes without saying that I would never leave without them.

A few years ago, Rosie, who helped me raise my children and now helps me raise my dogs, found a hungry and bedraggled dog at the local dog park. He was wearing a tag, so she called the number. It turned out the family had been away during the Malibu fire, and when they finally got home, the dog was gone. He walked all the way to our neighborhood. It is one of my favorite stories.

This brings me to the subject of today's column: the Romney dog. If, as it appears likely, Mitt Romney is the Republican nominee for president, we're all going to be getting an education on venture capital firms and whether they create jobs or destroy them. We'll all be watching the numbers to see whether, in these tough times, the 99 percent who used to aspire to be part of the 1 percent have now turned on the Romneys of the world.

All that is important, but it's also complicated — unlike a man and his dog.

Presidential elections are, in a very fundamental way, tests of character.

You can't predict all the issues or crises that will face the person you elect president, which means that character, ultimately, counts for more than position papers and platforms.

And in my book, as a dog lover, nothing tells you as much about a person's character as how they treat their dog.

So what are we to make of that infamous family vacation during which Romney put the dog in a crate on top of the car — for 12 hours? Or the more recent revelations that the dog and the crate had to be hosed down a few hours into the trip when his bowels gave way?

Respected New York Times columnist Gail Collins finds a way to get the dog into every column she writes about Romney. It's become a popular sort of puzzle: How will she get the dog in?

I've met Romney's family. They seem like very nice people. I'm sure they all loved their dog. Some people leave their dogs at home when they take vacations. The Romneys brought theirs. And with a car full of kids, there was apparently no room for the dog in the car.

I didn't have a dog growing up (my mother was afraid of them), so I don't really know whether it was common in those days for people to put their dog on the roof of their car. I'm sure I'll hear from plenty of people who claim they've done it and the dog was just fine.

Still, it's hard for me to imagine putting one of the Estrich dogs anywhere other than the back seat. Judy does like to ride in the front, but really, the back is safer.

Someone once said to me that heaven is where you meet all the dogs you've loved and lost. Maybe Hershey Estrich Kaplan is there waiting for me. I don't know whether Checkers was waiting for Nixon, or whether the Romney dog ended up having a fine vacation and a good life after that tough 12-hour trip and will welcome his family when that day comes.

I'm not a Romney voter, so maybe it doesn't matter. But I don't think I'm alone in this. Before I decide what I think about this man's character, I need to know more about that trip — and that dog.

And, prey tell what can one discern about the character of obama who as matters of fact twice voted on record to condone actual infanticide of born children, who deliberately lied on numerous occasions about his deceased mother's health insurance matters and her attempts while her medical costs were being covered to obtain disability benefits to which she had no entitlement who has consistently lied about the circumstances of his parents meeting, who has consistently lied about the effects of his “signature” accomplishment from which he runs headlong, to wit, obamacare, including lies about its tax status, its effects on doctor patient relationships and the inherent effect of federal funding of the murder of the unborn, who lied about his associations with domestic terrorists and about his knowledge of the racist America hating teachings and rhetoric his pastor for twenty years, who along with Holder instigated and then lied about “Fast and furious” and armed Mexican drug cartels and caused unknown numbers of deaths and the deaths of Americans all to attack Second Amendment rights, who deliberately lied to all U.S. citizens and to God [assuming of course that his swearing was not an act of taqqiya or kitman or both] when he swore upon the Bible to uphold and defend the Constitution and who is endeavoring by lies and deceit to keep the whole of the black community enslaved on the Democrat welfare plantation for the sake of his fascist ideology? The answer is a lot more than one can tell from an apocryphal story about a Republican candidate and a dog. It is long overdue for the rational people of this great country to look objectively at the character of the man elected in 2008 (on the back of mass deception) to the office of President and to realize that he is simply a congenital liar, fraudster, a man of moral turpidtude and the enemy of freedom.

Not all presidential elections are a test of character as evidenced in 2008.

Since you can glean so much about a person's character based on the handling/mishandling of a pet, I would love to read what you might have to say about "The Company One Keeps". A good place to start would be Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers and The Rev. Wright and others from his Chicago days.
Did the Obama's even have a dog before moving into the White House? I don't really care - because your article shows me that liberals have nothing of substance to talk about.
Petco just had a 5Kwalk/run in Del Mar for obese dogs - were you there?

Speaking of the nature of a man, what are we to make of the latest act by obama, to wit, the denial of the Keystone pipeline? Oh the media and other pundits will try to make the case that it is a pandering to the enviro nuts out there but it is not. There is no environmental aspect at all to obama's decision save that it makes good cover for the real reason, which is to say his treachery. Consider that the obama administration has already effectively shut off the vast proportion of oil production from the Gulf, has deliberately hampered and reduced shale oil and natural gas harvesting and production, and the EPA under obama's diktat is endeavoring to close as many coal fired power plants as it can. In one decision on Keystone, obama has deprived the US of an equal barrel availability of oil as we have daily from Saudi Arabia, has added Canada to the list of allies alienated and has consciously strengthened our enemies that is China, other Asian nations and the Islamists. As I have posted previously it is his patent aim to destroy all home energy production in order to aid his Islamist brothers. Face it, all of you who are not obama zombies [ for them there is no hope and we must be vigilant of them] the nature of the man sitting in the oval office is a proven true enemy within, who is actively seeking the destruction of the US.

I know a lot of people like the Romneys, only not rich. They are affluent, Christian, law abiding, have execellent work ethics and are good parents and for the most part, good and faithful spouses. But I would not leave my dogs with them, even if they would dog sit which they most likely would not except in an emergency. They are not bad people, they just do not put dogs in the same category as I do. They would not be inhumane but they would not stop to pick one up off the street, as I have done. I dont know whether any of them would make a good president or not.

Susan, how true how true, animals particularly dogs can be the window to ones sole.
Reminds me of a story I heard from an old Secret Service Guy who was in the White House with Bill Clinton. Can't say it's true but , you know

Seems Bill was porking everything that would stand still and lying to Hillary about were he was all night. Hillary startrd to ask Bill where he was going and when he would be back. So Bill started off saying "I am going to walk the dog, might be a few hours" This is how ole Bill was able to meet up with that intern, um, what's her name. You know the one Bill "never had sexual relations with" Anyway big Bill would stumble back to the residence every night with his zipper down, shirt pulled out and lipstick all over his stogie, and Hillary would say, "wheres the dog" Downstairs getting cleaned up" Bill would reply. As you know his NON sexual affair with what's her name went on for months. Every night "wheres the dog?" "Down stairs getting cleaned up." Well You might think that at some point Bill would say, "What ? we ain't got no dog what's wrong with Hillary?" What Billy Boy didn't know is that Hillary knew they didn't have a dog but she was having an affair with her bull dyke secretary and didn't care. Well you just never know about them liberal democrats, lying, fornicating and such, and after all they didn't even have a dog

Susan, I can believe you are the mother of 3 dogs, but since you are a liberal can you clarify for me, do all your dogs have the same father or did you mate with 3 different fathers?
