About Marilynn Preston

Marilynn Preston -- journalist, Emmy Award-winning TV producer and writer, and speaker -- is the creator of Energy Express, the longest-running syndicated fitness column in the country.

"Energy Express isn't aimed at the ultra-marathoner or uber-exerciser," says Marilynn, who has reported on healthy lifestyle issues for more than 30 years and, along the way, become a certified personal trainer. "It's for all the rest of us who want to experience a more conscious, balanced, energized life: exercising more, eating smarter, enjoying nature, learning to integrate body, mind and breath."

When Energy Express began back in 1976, Marilynn and the entire country were just waking up to the joys and advantages of living a healthier, more active lifestyle. Back then, fitness was a fad, like CB radio and needlepoint. No one counted carbs, only hamsters ran on treadmills, and yoga was something for swamis, not mommies.

All that has changed, and Energy Express has been cheerleading the way.

In an engaging, opinionated style, she spots trends, explodes myths and keeps up a lively dialogue with her readers. Is walking as good as running? How can I get my kids to eat better? What can I do about jiggly thighs, creaky knees, tender backs? She explores the pleasures and pitfalls of an active life, including injury prevention, nutrition, workplace wellness, mind/body therapies, weight control, adventure travel and more.

Marilynn helps readers make positive change happen, inspiring them to be the best they can be. Start where you are, she advises. Who cares if you've failed before? You're never too old, too fat or too lazy to eat the breakfast of champions.

Marilynn has written two books (Dear Dr. Jock: The People's Guide to Sports and Fitness and Work Well, Be Well), and won two Emmys and a Women's Sports Foundation award for her nationally syndicated television series, also called Energy Express, all about sports, fitness, and adventure for kids and families. She created, produced and co-wrote the series, and still does a lot of pro bono work on kid fitness in her hometown of Chicago. Marilynn also gives talks and workshops on wellness-related subjects, including a recent interactive program for the American Heart Association called Aging As Adventure: How To Grow Older, Better.

When Marilynn isn't writing her syndicated column, she's living it. Her fitness routine includes yoga, race-walking, strength training, cycling, wine-tasting and as much adventure travel as she can fit in. She's climbed Mt. Olympus, trekked in Tibet, bicycled in France, gone dog sledding in Lapland and scuba dived in the Yucatan. Her next adventure, still in the dreaming stages, involves a 45-foot sailboat and a snorkel.
