The Cowardly Character Assassination of Sarah Palin
Sunken ships loosen bitter lips. The failed McCain campaign, for all its high-minded talk of honor, duty and courage, is now teeming with unscrupulous gossipmongers. Seems the dishy staffers forgot to crack open their copies of Sen. McCain's bestseller, "Character Is Destiny: Inspiring Stories Every Young Person Should Know and Every Adult Should Remember."
Rest assured: Their cowardly character assassination of Sarah Palin won't be forgotten.
The finks turned to Newsweek and Fox News to spread petty rumors about Palin's intellect and character. The magazine peddled anecdotes from sources horrified that Palin greeted top advisers at her hotel room — gasp! — "wearing nothing but a towel" and "wet hair." Fox News reporter Carl Cameron breathlessly reported that his unnamed McCain sources told him Palin lacked "a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate" because, they claimed, she didn't know which countries were parties to the North American Free Trade Agreement and "didn't understand that Africa was a continent, rather than a series, a country just in itself."
Let's assume for a moment that the McCain rumormongers are telling the truth about Palin (and I don't believe they are). Who would it damn more: Palin, or McCain and his vetters, who greenlighted her for the vice presidential nomination? Don't need a fancy Ivy League degree to figure that one out.
In introducing her to America, McCain praised her independence and backbone: She "stands up for what's right, and she doesn't let anyone tell her to sit down." The inside snipers are now roasting her for that very attribute — redefined as "going rogue" — because she had the nerve to try to schedule media interviews on her own. The nerve of her!
Palin's response to the campaign fragging? At a late Wednesday night airport press conference in Anchorage, immediately upon landing home after the election defeat, she smiled cheerfully. The Alaska governor shrugged off the "foolish things" said by the McCain saboteurs, and simply said, "It's politics. … It's rough and tumble and you've got to have a thick skin just like I've got."
Hollywood savaged Palin. Journalists mocked her. Liberal blogs slimed her. Opponents cursed her, Photoshopped her, hacked her e-mail, hanged her in effigy, called her bigot, Bible-thumper and bimbo, and attacked her husband and children. But nothing Palin endured during the election season compares to the treatment she's receiving from these backstabbing blabbermouths who worked on the same campaign she poured herself into over the last three months.
Sarah Palin worked her heart out. She energized tens of thousands to come out when they would have otherwise stayed home. She touched countless families. I didn't agree with everything she said on the campaign trail. But she vigorously defended the Second Amendment and the sanctity of life more eloquently in practice than any of the educated conservative aristocracy. And she did it all with a tirelessness and an infectious optimism that defied the shameless, bottomless attempts by elites in both parties to bring her and her family down.
Liberty needs a virtuous people to survive; self-governance requires virtuous leaders. "Knowledgeability" is a necessary trait in political life, but it is not sufficient. The elitist critics of Palin, so blindly enamored of Barack Obama's ability to hold forth for hours on theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, ignored the Founding Fathers' counsel: Character counts. In times of adversity and crisis, it counts more than IQ points, instant trivia recall and bloviation skills.
"The most important thing I have learned, from my parents, from teachers, from my faith, from many good people I have been blessed to know, and from the lives of people whose stories we have included in this book," John McCain wrote in "Character Is Destiny," "is to want what they had, integrity, and to feel the sting of my conscience when I have risked it for some selfish reason."
John McCain not only failed to make that message stick with the electorate, he apparently couldn't persuade his own staff to heed his advice and practice what he preached.

Well said Michelle Malkin. I have been trying to articulate (mostly to my liberal friends) why Sarah Palin is so important, and why they should not believe the media attacks. You nailed it. It is not just her energy and ability to mobilize. It is her actions.

Well said! Bravo!! Sarah Palin was and shall always be a target for the weak kneed and weak minded. When you are a good looking woman Madison Avenue would have you wearing lipstick selling Buicks or in the shower wearing lipstick with a head full of foam. That is the predominant mindset of weak-willed Americans and our economy proves it, we've bought all the products. I have to chuckle since Sarah mentioned that but these "smart guys" don't. A woman who is both able and (to some) a hottie to boot, is something well outside the box and not many can handle that, they'd like to no doubt, but they can't! The thing these losers are so vile over is they wish they got "lucky" with someone like Sarah but these losers know they don't have a chance! Never did, never will. So they turn to the almighty podium and proceed to slime. While trying to expose Sarah's "true colors" they really show their own a$$. I'm sure many of these slimers had very few casual friends as children. LMAO! Go Sarah!! And thank you for pointing this out, Michelle.

Re: Masako;... My thoughts exactly... Are you my twin??? She did a great big number on the democratic voters, and character assassination is a nice word for it, but the truth is more like taking a rusty razor blade to the heart of our unity, and for that she deserves the truth...- Sara Palin is a traitor... Those people who trade on our national unity, little as it is, and in terrible shape though it is deserve the contumely of history, and us too.. What a total shet...Thanks... Sweeney ... P.S... You know she is done, don't you... Once you have made a laughing stock of yourself, there is no coming back... The best she can hope for is a table at fox... Even there her days would be numbered... Some people are just trippers... It is one thing to be stupid; but to be mean and stupid will wear out your welcome in a hurry..If you have a business to run you have to get the dumheads out of the way... Alaska is about far enough out of the way... And there; she can remember what might have been if she had but once done her home work... Thanks, and best...

Re: bill s;...Geezes... Is there some difference between selling buicks and selling a potful of republican bad ideas??? Remember what Buick used to say: WHEN better cars are built, buick will build them... What does that mean??? You're not building better cars now??? Same with republicanism: When better ideas are hatched, the republicans will sell them??? This country has already had its best ideas, and they are all in the preamble of the Constitution; and the republicans, and democrats for that matter have done little to achieve them, and everything to avoid them... Read your Declaration of Independence... Tell me what we fought for, and tell me what we have achieved??? Read your preamble.... What goals expressed there are the goals of the republican party??? What goals stated in the preamble would the republican party allow us to achieve??? Thanks...Sweeney

Great article. I really miss seeing you on Orielly. What happened? Did you get too conservative. I for one loved your attitude. I am so fed up with the elitists in the party. They are the ones who have caused the problems.I voted for John McCain as the lesser of two evils. I am tired of not having someone I could believe in. J.M. was a Very honorable man but I didn't share many, and I mean many of his views. I think the smartest thing he did was Sarah. She got him a ten point lead which his handlers blew.Over 70% of the party agrees with me. It's going to take someone who will get rid of nafta and get us out of the wto.Otherwise we will never manufacture anything else in this country.

Re: The Cowardly Character Assassination of Sarah Palin.
First let me be really clear Michelle Malkin and the conservative right. You are now officially in political exile. Enjoy the time-off and don't expect to return anytime soon.
It is no surprise that only MM is defending the likes of Sarah Palin, who not only lacked the experience, knowledge and temperament to be a VP, and potentially a president. Ms. Palin was and is a total disaster as a Politian. The Republic party was smitten by her looks, as it certainly could not have been Ms. Palin's intelligence. She totally lacked the latter, as exhibited on numerous occasions. She should have stayed in Alaska where it appears intelligence is not a qualifying factor in order to be elected to public office. The Republicans worshipped at the altar of ignorance too long, and guess what, you paid the price. Ignorance is really not bliss. Eventually it catches up with you.
My advice to you narrow minded bible thumping backwoods hillbillies and ignoramuses, read books other than the bible. Understand the world outside the United State and learn to assimilate into the global world. You are in a minority on a global basis. You think losing an election is bad? Not nearly, the worst is yet to come. There is a saying, “What goes around comes around”. Remember slavery and segregation, well that would be too good for your type. Perhaps we will just banish you to an island as a “final solution”.
MM you must be the most unsecure women on this earth to spout such ignorant & vile hate clocked in the veil of a political journalist. Shame on you!!!!!!

Michelle, read what you wrote. McCain staffers did this!!! Has the thought that we just barely avoided the catastrophe of those same staffers in the White House with McCain and "helping" with our government business occured to you??? This is your man, they are his people. Look long and hard at what we just narrowly averted.

McStupid runs a campaign thats taking on water, he selects a woman with credible background and education, gets her on board to do the bailing, which she did with not only enthusiasm, but conviction. She draws crowds in the thousands, McDumb starts to go with her because he lacks that ability, then stands by after he gets his #%ss
kicked and lets his staff try to demolish her, the chump doesn't deserve to even be in the Senate with his abismal
record, let alone the president.
He ran a Bob Dole type campaign, except Doles had lock washers, so where in the hell are all these good old Republicans that should be speaking out against such behavior?....probably running for cover the cowards.....disgraceful!
Well she's back home now and as she met the crowd waiting for her, she did it with...now listen closely you people on McStupids staff..Style & Grace.
Good Candidate, smart lady good governor, great mom, good wife....Welcome home Sarah we still love you.

Michelle - Thank you for saying what I am feeling. I would have stayed home and not voted if it weren't Sarah Palin. I wish that Obama's team would have been treated as Ms. Palin was. She gave me hope. Mike Jerkoff - your name explains where you are coming from. We are on duty more than ever. What out.

Re: John...Sir;... Do you suppose that all those young people who changed parties to vote for Mr. Obama are going to come back if you get the republicans as radically reactionary as you wish it to be??? Don't forget that progressivism was a winning republican stratagy, and that they gave it up to be contras... So long as racial hate could unify the south behind the republican banner, there was little hope of progress... But, the democrats have picked up the progressive banner dropped by the republicans, and carried it into the white house... What does that tell you Mr. John??? Could it be that your children know more than their parents??? Could it be that they understand that the safety net cut off from under the welfare mommy, was cut off from under them, too??? You can spoil the country with wedge issues, but even if politics is made a winner take all sport, in fact, we as a nation cannot live as a winner take all society... We have to be progressive, republicans and democrats together... We cannot hang on to a sinking ship like the capitains want us to... We have to hit the life boats, and we have to all survive... You are welcome to join us... But you have to leave your cargo of hate behind...Thanks...Sweeney

I agree with Mike. Also the Rove way to campaign has ruined politics for America. The "pitbull" attack dog Palin
should have been expecting this from get go. The fact they picked her because they mistakenly were under
the false impression that Hillary's supporters would support this vapid politician. I may have voted for
McCain had he chosen someone else. The attacks on her are ridiculous - THEY PICKED HER. And if
McCain had searched better he would stood a better chance in the election. And if the Republicans want to
concede in 2012 - pick her for the Republican nomination then.

Michelle has cut through to the heart of McCain staff exposure of itself. They are what they are and should be known for who they are.. Fox News and Newsweek could have (and should have) checked furthe. What has already been found is a differend and more factual opinion. The sources are high level and were those who present and involved in Palin preparation, campaigning and dress. Carl Cameron wrote what was told to him. What was not said appears to be the fair and balanced aspect of the untold story. If the people who spoke are named it is unlikely they woulod be hired on in the furture. And that is something that should be recognized.
It is interesting that Fox News or Carl Cameron or Newsweek has not obtained comments from specific individuals of the McCain camp, who by name can furnish additional information, that gives fair and balanced insight. It certainly is not difficult anyone, who wants to be fair and balanced, that that appears to be needed. Fox News and Carl Cameron have not showns themselves to be fair and balanced. They are judged on what they did. They will be futher judged on what they do further in regard to this matter. If they are not embarassed they should be.
Further investigating reporting, preferably by a number of Fox News employees, other than Carl Cameron because he appears to be part of the loss of fairness and balance,, would best serve Fox News. The results in this further investigation would be measured by its honesty. It wouold also put Carl Cameron in the proper light he deserves. If additional information that has come out is true it indicates that Carl Cameron needs to be terminated or at the very least sent to Fair and Balanced 101. And those at Fox News, who also have responsibility, need to furnish information of how meeting the standards espoused by Fox News was implemented apparently not properly.

"I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door," Palin said in an interview with Fox News on Monday. "And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door." ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I guess you right wingers have your sights set on her as your great white hope, but honestly, couldn't you have picked somebody a little better educated and more adept at English? We used to be criticizing blacks for poor English. Oh, how times have changed.

I was not a fan of Sarah Palin, and that fact probably won't change any time soon. However I have to take her side on this one. The behavior of McCain's staff post-election is indefensible. How utterly small of them to take cheap shots at someone who, for better or worse, gave their campaign everything she had to offer. Of course it's entirely feasible that her presence was a deciding factor in the election. The fact remains they made a choice to bring her on board. If they truly believe she was the wrong person for the job, they have only one person to blame for her being there in the first place. Accept the loss with the kind of dignity you would expect from your opponents. Contrary to popular opinion, not all Liberals take pleasure in watching Sarah Palin being treated so shabbily by her own party.

It appears Malkin blamed a plethora of people for rumors about Palin, her intellect and character.
As is typical with some members of the GOP, Malkin name-calls the "unscrupulous gossipmongers" for "cowardly character assassinations" while forgetting the decades of similar acts by the Bush administrations on John McCain, John Kerry, former President and Senator Clinton, and President-elect Barack Obama. Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan's book discussed "Bush's obvious corruption has hardly diminished the ongoing power of the expert liars who continue to pump dirt into the drinking water of our democracy."
So, who should Malkin blame for Palin's character assassination after Palin agreed to run for office, following one meeting with McCain? Malkin might assign blame to those who nominated Palin at the RNC: the Christian Right who didn't want a Mitt Romney mormon president, the likes of Hewlett Packard CEOs, oil companies and their cohorts and RNCs 50 states' delegates.
Sarah Palin might accept responsibility for her reputation due to over-estimating her intelligence, American family values, politician abilities, honesty and value to some GOP cannibals who eat their own when the buck has to stop somewhere.
McCain aides may be leaking truthful items about Palin's personality, knowledge and spending habits but Palin was the VP candidate who might have questioned her own decision-making when she tried to masquerade herself as a lipstick-wearing pitbull hockey-mom who had executive experience governing a town of 4,000 people, while exposing a pregnant teen daughter.
Media knows there's a voracious public hunger for almost anything about the Alaska hockey mom - especially in the complete absence of any other viable Republican Party leaders who weren't caught toe-tapping in bathroom stalls, cheating on their wives or caught spending nearly bankrupted taxpayer dollars. Stay tuned as Palin appears on Greta Van Sustern, and every other media outlet while deceiving herself into thinking she will be a viable candidate for the GOP in 2010. Her 15 minutes of fame are over! Palin should return the clothing, return to her family duties and job, and stop portraying her victim-stance (as criminal thinkers).
The election is over for another 4 years. Let's unite as one United States of American, until next time. PALIN - GO HOME!

It is not character assassination if there's not much character to assassinate (see Bridge to Nowhere, Troopergate, shipping her kids all over on taxpayers $ to see Todd go on a snow machine plus her willness to say anything she's told "he's palling around with terrorists!" and do nothing to stifle hate speech at her rallies ). The Democrats could have taken a page from the Republican's book of dirty politics., but the flaws of Sarah Palin were so obvious to everyone they did not require the Obama campaign to advertise them-- to deny them is lunacy. McCain had plenty of skeletons in his closet, but guess what, he was a decent man and Obama did not seek to win the election as the lesser of two evils, but instead as the better choice.
