Mildred "Babe" Didrikson qualified to compete in all of them, but Olympic rules limited female athletes to three. So, she skipped the 100 meters and the discus. Then she took gold in the 80-meter hurdles and the javelin, setting new world records in both. In the high jump, she tied with her teammate Jean Shiley but took silver after a tie-breaking "jump off."
