From a Blog to an Empire: An Interview With Lisa Sugar

If you've ever read a PopSugar article, you know how hilarious and informative the website can be. It's amazing to me that Lisa Sugar started PopSugar from her own living room while still working a full-time job and has turned it into a media empire. Lisa is smart, funny, topical and inspiring; she's everything a great leader should be.

That's why I support this woman's work.

Lisa Sugar is the co-founder and president of the global media company PopSugar Inc. Her first book, "Power Your Happy," published by Dutton in September 2016, details how she started PopSugar and outlines her "work hard, play nice" management style, as well as lessons learned from mentoring a large and diverse staff.

1) Why did you first start a blog? Was it something you wanted to say or something that was missing from other sites out there at the time?

I first started writing PopSugar in March 2005. I wanted to get myself in the habit of writing every day, and with the internet, I felt like I had a new way to share information people wanted to read on a daily basis. Everything I wrote had a conversational, positive, fun tone, unlike most of the snarky and negative content that was out there at the time.

2) How challenging was it to keep your own voice while expanding?

It hasn't been a challenge! It's so much fun to hire and train the team. After a long interview process, we work really closely with new hires and have a blast brainstorming and editing their content. We have extensive training guides and tools so people feel supported in honing their own voices while staying within what makes PopSugar's voice so unique.

3) What is your most lucrative revenue stream to date? Are you experimenting with other sources of revenue?

Advertising is our No. 1 revenue stream. We work with brand partners in many ways — from standard ad units to native content and videos, where we can share more stories with brands that our audience enjoys consuming. We also have an e-commerce business through ShopStyle, and our monthly PopSugar subscription box business is going on its fourth year.

4) When did you decide it was time to write a book offering career advice?

About a year and a half ago, I felt like I finally had enough experience to write down my advice and help others. At PopSugar, we love educating our audience, and personal stories are such a large part of that. I kept getting asked the same thing over and over: "How did you do it?" "How do I get a job like yours?" The book answers those questions, tells our story and gives the readers questions to ask themselves to guide their own journeys.

5) Who gave you the best piece of business advice to date?

My dad, who told me, "Do what you love." Obviously easier said than done, but he led by example, and between my dad and my husband, Brian, who also lives his life this way, I knew it was a philosophy I needed to follow.
