Republican Victory, Bossy Women, and Weanie Democrats

Dear Mark: Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink this week in a special congressional election in Florida. Many touted this election as a referendum on Obamacare and possibly a gauge for future elections. What is the "Dear Mark" analysis and will this impact the November midterm election? — Cautiously Optimistic

Dear Cautiously: I too am cautiously optimistic concerning the Republican Party's chances in November. However, the Republicans are quite capable of screwing up this golden opportunity, so I won't count the chickens until November.

Democrat pundits including Democrat National Committee chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz claim the loss is no big deal because this was a Republican seat to begin with. They fail to mention that President Obama carried this district twice.

Prior to this election, Democrats thought they had a clever campaign answer that would overcome the Obamacare disaster with the "Amend it don't end it" slogan. Their feelings were bolstered by a Kaiser Family Foundation Health tracking poll that found people were just as likely to vote for someone who wanted to repair Obamacare as they were a candidate who wanted to repeal it.

The problem Democrats have in November is Americans recognize that the same people who are offering to "repair" the Affordable Care Act are the same ones who gave America this disaster to begin with. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Dear Mark: Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is leading a campaign to ban the word "bossy" when referring to women. The movement is claiming that banning the word would help empower girls to seek more leadership positions in life. I'm so tired of political correctness. So what if a girl is called "bossy" growing up? Aren't there worse things that girls can be called? — Chicks Rule

Dear Chicks: As the husband of a beautiful wife and the dad of two outstanding daughters, I believe this is one of the most ridiculous campaigns I've ever heard of. I'm also disappointed that Condoleezza Rice has signed on to this politically correct madness.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" may seem simplistic and cliche, but it's the truth. The "ban bossy" campaign will teach girls that words can stop them. If calling a girl "bossy" derails her life and career, then she probably didn't have the right stuff to begin with.

When a girl or anybody for that matter is called "bossy," that should be a teaching moment. It should be used as motivation to cultivate leadership or at the very least self-esteem. Great leaders — successful leaders — overcome obstacles. They've overcome difficulties, bias and prejudice and that experience is what makes them great leaders and or successful in life.

Former presidential candidate and billionaire businessman Ross Perot has been credited with the following quotation, "A hard fall means a high bounce if you're made of the right stuff." That's the lesson I want to teach my girls, but then again that won't fit on a cute little button like "Ban Bossy." I prefer the bumper sticker that a wise friend gave me that says "Politically Incorrect and Proud of it."

Dear Mark: The Senate Democrats produced an all-night talkathon to raise awareness for the impact of climate change. Isn't that one of the biggest wastes of time you've ever heard of? — Ain't Hugging No Trees

Dear Ain't: Of course it was. The irony is that the media and liberal pundits went crazy for weeks when Republican Senator Ted Cruz "filibustered" on the Senate floor during last fall's debt ceiling debate.

This speaks volumes about the weanie Senate Democrats. It took 28 Democrat senators to speak 15 hours while Cruz single handedly spoke for 21 hours. Wimps.
