Get into overdrive...and supersize. The surprise of a new fashion season? It's all about over-the-top trends. It's time to live large. Here are some of the big buys for fall to put on your shopping list.
—An oversized coat. Whether it's a menswear overcoat, a plush bathrobe trench or a fuzzy faux fur, the oversized coat is a fashion hit for this fall and winter. Wear it swingy and loose or cinch it in but wear it as a statement piece to layer over everything and warm up cold days ahead. In bright colors, supersized outerwear is even more of a standout trend.
—A plaid menswear suit. Suit up in head-to-toe checks, plaids and tweeds this fall in pantsuits and skirt suits that speak with authority and give you plenty of room to exhale. This will be the new work uniform for the season. Toss on a big coat over the whole look when the temperatures start dropping.
—A folkloric maxi dress. Think arts and craft inspired a la '70s — patchwork, crazy quilt and florals all mixed and matched in painterly prints and bold brights. On dark backgrounds, these folkloric-inspired dresses (the longer the better) give new life to traditional fall silhouettes, especially when mixed with other prints like leopard.
—A luxe leather jacket or pants. Black is back in a big way...in leather. Leather jackets with big, padded shoulders, long trench coats and sleek pants are slinking down the runways in shiny, lacquered looks that reflect a whole new sophistication way beyond those days back in the '80s. Suit up in all black leather if you want to go really big on the trend, or pick one piece — like a new big-shouldered jacket — to add a rock vibe to jeans and sweaters.
—A utilitarian jacket. Big coats and black leather may make big fashion statements, but when it comes to everyday clothes for fall, the utilitarian jackets like anoraks, parkas and hoodies are what many of us reach for 24-7. This fall look for safari-inspired jackets and coats roam into the trend picture. So, do fringed western-inspired jackets. In rich, buttery suedes, these are two perennial classics that may be your best big buys of the season.
—A wide-leg pair of pants. After years of skinny pants, the wide-leg silhouettes look new and pair perfectly with any of the above-mentioned jackets and form fitting knit sweaters. Whether they're on the long side, and flared at the bottom or shorter, mid-calf versions, one pair of these wider jeans or trousers will add an updated silhouette to your wardrobe.
—A shimmering cocktail dress. It may be a little early to think about what to wear to holiday parties, but this fall, sequins, silver and iridescent metallics are going to transform your wardrobe with space-age glamour. Accessorize with oversized plastic baubles and sparkling crystals and you've got out-of-this-world style that you can start wearing anytime of the year.
Celebrate a new fashion season and get the party started.
