Star Spangled Style

Set off some fashion fireworks this summer with a new approach to celebrating American style with red, white and blue classics that burst into view from sea to shining sea...and at picnics everywhere. Take these 10 steps to patriotic panache:

—Wearing red, white and blue from head to toe can be a little too much. So first, choose one main piece in one main color. White jeans, capris or shorts will ground a busy pattern or print like a flag tank or striped T-shirt.

—Then add touches of the other colors. If you have one basic "anchor" color, like white, then you can add small doses of red and blue. If you're going to a barbeque, you might want to stick to darker reds and blues so you don't have to worry as much about drips and drools!

—Denim is also a favorite foundation for a patriotic fashion palette, whether it's a pair of frayed cut-off shorts or skinny jeans or a denim jacket. Add in your white and red accents and you've got the right stuff.

—Get creative and think outside the stars and stripes. There are lots of ways to do red, white and blue in a fresh way. Think a tie-dye sundress, a sparkly studded peasant blouse or an embroidered skirt dripping with fringe.

—Prints and patterns are other ways to put add a fresh spark to this summer color combo. Imagine gingham checks, tropical florals and graphic stripes. Flag prints are of course another favorite way to show your patriotic flair in new ways on maxi dresses, tank tops and unfurled on the backs of bomber jackets or even handbags. One of these special pieces is all you need.

—Set sail with a nautical inspired theme. This one is a classic harking back to the '50s and '60s, when sophisticated Hollywood stars took to their boats and yachts in casual striped T-shirts, sailor pants, dungarees and boat shoes. The look is still a timeless summertime fashion favorite, whether you're on a boat or in the backyard.

—Go bold and bright. Color-blocking is still a major style trend, and this may be one of the easiest ways to put together an outfit that celebrates our true colors. Take a white pair of Bermuda shorts, add a red T-shirt and thread a navy blue bandana through your belt loops. Simple and stylish.

—Or go all white. If you really want to stay cool and comfortable in the summer heat and humidity, then ease into wearing white head to toe. A breezy, long white halter dress, a gauzy white caftan, a pair of white capris and cotton shirt tied at the waist. Then if you'd like to add red, white or blue accessories, feel free...or not.

—Swimwear is another option for keeping your cool and showing off a little red, white and blue. Bikini tops paired with long skirts and maillots teamed with palazzo pants are just a few of the ways you can go from the pool to the patio party with a minimum of fuss and muss.

—Stick to simplicity when it comes to accessories, especially jewelry. Sunscreen and statement necklaces can create a sticky situation. Ditto for chunky bracelets and wide belts. Add a splash of red, white or blue with your shoes and keep them on the comfortable side —flat sandals, sneakers or espadrilles. Then by the time the fireworks start, you'll still be ready to party like it's the Fourth of July.
