Lovers of '80s music may find it impossible to think of a new moon on Monday without also hearing Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran follow up with, "And a fire dance through the night." This Monday moon is in the realm of Aquarius and is the signifier that tips off Lunar New Year.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). The calls to action coming from the commercial sector will be nonstop — a nuisance, really. You'll tune most of them out, but then one thing grabs your attention, and for good reason. This is a fit. Yes, this one will benefit you greatly.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You take criticism without getting offended and apply it well. Do you have any idea how rare a quality this is? And it will get you noticed by people you can learn from.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Because you have a realistic self-perception, you will be able to determine which of your talents and skills to lean on now and also what you need to acquire to move to the next level.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). You're ready to take a project to the next level, but you have to get more people on board to make this happen. Jump into the social swirl and charm them. If you don't, someone else will.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, which would you choose? The answer relates to something that, were you to give it focus and priority, would bring you joy.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Even though your instinct is to put in more effort, becoming a more effective person today has more to do with being lighter, not taking things too personally, and just being generally cool about it all. You can relax.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). In the past, you've consulted others because you needed to hear that you'd succeed and things would go well. Today there's a voice inside, growing stronger and better at telling you such things on the regular.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The Greeks worshipped the Charities, three goddesses known for charm, beauty, kindness and creativity. Consider invoking these lovely energies by banding with two other people to pursue such values.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You don't always want to be around people, though it doesn't mean you think ill of them. To choose your own company can be a preference of the moment, not necessarily a rejection.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Though you are very disciplined in some regards, the quality cannot extend to all parts of your life at once because discipline doesn't work that way. You'll choose where to exert yourself, and then you'll relax and restore your energy.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You put up with behavior from others that is less than desirable for a few different reasons, which may include the status dynamics of the relationships and your fear of being unkind. But are you really enabling the other people?
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). When you really need to get down to work, even the slightest distraction is a terrible waste because it pulls you out of the moment, wasting time on both sides of said moment. Ward against distraction! It's costlier than you think!
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Feb. 4). You're a bright spirit shining into the heart of things, finding the threads to tie them together. You'll find nuggets of wisdom and beauty everywhere — in silliness, heaviness, low humor, high art, deeply intellectual subjects, clouds and marshmallow fluff. You'll attract all you need and more this year; believe it. Leo and Libra adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 20, 2, 22 and 17.
ASTROLOGICAL QUESTION: "Holiday, how do I 'check my privilege'? I've been getting that a lot lately, even though I'm a spiritual person who believes that we all create our own destiny. I'm a Pisces. I meditate and visualize, and I work hard and make things happen."
Thank you for this excellent question. "Check your privilege" is a saying in the popular vernacular that many don't bother to pursue beyond the superficial implications. Your interest in actually checking your privilege is a sign that you may be able to transcend the blindness of your position. After all, the very nature of "privilege" is that it creates its own status quo and therefore is often unnoticed and unfelt, taken for granted because it's the norm.
As a Pisces, you may appreciate the parable about the two young fish out for a swim who happen upon an older fish going the opposite direction. The older fish greets the younger ones with a "Good morning. How's the water?" The young fish swim on for a while, until one eventually turns to the other and asks, "What's water?"
This is the nature of privilege. It often doesn't become clear until it's been revoked. Ask any fish who has spent time on a dry dock.
More on your excellent question tomorrow.
CELEBRITY PROFILES: Platinum-selling singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw has been touring the world, as well as writing songs with other artists — for instance, the Brett Young song "Chapters," which he also sings on. This musical Aquarius was born when the moon and Saturn were both in Leo, the sign of entertainment, an arrangement that points to rewards and lessons all gained through performing.
