2014 Going Down as Epic Year for Faith-Based Films

Get ready for the second coming. The flock of faith-based films that created a stir earlier this year is soon to be back in the spotlight. "God's Not Dead," for example, is currently being offered "in an exclusive, pre-DVD showing window" for churches and religious schools prior to its Aug. 5 home video release. You can also pre-order the pic from Wal-Mart, Amazon and other outlets.

"God's Not Dead" may have been a filmic sin in and of itself according to critics (including some Christian ones, by the way, who decried its cardboard characters and such). However, the Kevin Sorbo-starrer about an atheist professor who is beaten in debate by a Christian student has already made $62 million worldwide on a budget of a mere $2 million — a reverence-inspiring feat in Hollywood.

"Heaven Is for Real" with Greg Kinnear made about $94 million on a $12 million budget. Now there'll be more income coming in with the DVD release July 22.

Come July 29, Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" comes to DVD. That's the Russell Crowe starrer inspired by the Bible story, nothing like a faithful adaptation of it. Met in March with reviews such as the U.K.'s Guardian summation — "preposterous but endearingly unhinged" — "Noah" got a lot of attention from faith groups. It garnered worldwide box office just shy of $360 million on a budget of $125 million.

"Son of God" is earning coin in a second resurrection, having been released on DVD early last month, after becoming a movie that was originally seen as part of a TV miniseries. It took in $67.8 million at the box office worldwide — especially good considering the film, starring Diogo Morgado (a.k.a. "Hot Jesus"), cost virtually nothing to make. It was excerpted from the Mark Burnett-Roma Downey-produced, wildly successful "The Bible" History Channel limited series that aired last year, you will recall. Credit the Burnett's smart and utterly relentless promotion and marketing campaign directly to faith communities and leaders for this success.

Clearly, 2014 is going down as a good vintage for faith-based films — at least in terms of making money. And we're far from being done.

The independent "A Long Way Off" — a watchable little modern day retelling of the Prodigal Son story — premiered last month and is rolling out across the country this summer. "I always felt it was a story that had a commonality with people today. It's been around for several thousand years, but still resonates culturally across lines. I felt it was a story that could attract a wide audience," says producer and co-director Michael Davis.

With Jason Burkey ("October Baby") and John Diehl ("Stargate") as the central wayward offspring and long-suffering dad, and such familiar faces as Robert Davi and Edie McClurg in supporting roles, the spirited small budget flick has gotten some extra attention due to a prominent cameo by conservative talk show host Sean Hannity.

"He's a friend of the film," says Davis. "Sean is great. He's been huge behind it."

In October, Nicolas Cage's "Left Behind" comes out — an action film with Cage as a commercial pilot flying his plane in the aftermath of the Rapture. Chad Michael Murray and Lea Thompson are also in the cast of the feature centered on the well-known books by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.

In December, another big-budget Biblical epic is coming, "Exodus: Gods and Kings." It has Christian Bale as Moses and is being directed by Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"). It also has Aaron Paul (yes, Jesse Pinkman of "Breaking Bad"!) as Joshua, Joel Edgerton ("Zero Dark Thirty") as Rhamses — plus Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, John Turturro, more than 5,000 extras and tons and tons of CGI. And it's 3-D! Moviegoers need not be religious to get excited about this one.

Scott, who has described himself as agnostic, reportedly has his Moses undergoing a crisis of faith. The film, according to the Hollywood Reporter, will have an "unconventional" depiction of God. We'll see.
