Recession? What Recession?

His name is Clinton Leander. He's from Guyana, and he came to America in 1992. I met Mr. Leander in a hotel room in New York City, where I was speaking at a convention. My wife and I discovered we were missing two light bulbs, called for them and he responded. He was pleasant, personable, friendly, and our conversation was exciting. His dream for many years had been to come to America, and upon his arrival, he immediately went to work. He has been a police officer, an automobile mechanic, an electrician, and then, with a smile, he said, "I did whatever it took to make my American dream a reality."

When others were seeking work and mentioned "recession," Mr. Leander would grin and say, "Recession? What recession? A man willing to work can get a job of some kind doing something," and as a result, his employment has been rewarding. He came seeking opportunity and was determined to take advantage of it. He had no interest in welfare or government subsistence; all he asked for was a chance to get ahead.

He arrived in America "flat broke" but full of excitement and determination, and immediately sought work, willing to accept whatever was available so he could support his family. Results: In slightly over two years, he and his family moved into their own home.

Think about it: He left culture, climate, friends, support groups, etc., but he came to America with a dream to achieve. It's always a pleasure to meet someone with the excitement and enthusiasm of a Clinton Leander. He not only has lots to smile about, but he gives other people something to smile about, as well.
