Conservative Mitt and New DeficitsDear Mark: Mitt Romney won the Florida primary in a landslide over Newt Gingrich. Should Romney win, I am concerned that he is not conservative enough to offer a clear choice over Barack Obama in the fall. As Newt points out, we have already tried moderates like Bob Dole and John McCain, and look what that got us. Do we have a chance? — Doubting Thomas in Tomball Dear Doubting: Of course conservatives have a chance. Believe me, if Romney is the nominee, his brand of conservatism will offer a crystal clear choice over Obama's big-government liberalism. Newt loves to point out that Romney is a Massachusetts moderate who at times governed left of center, but I believe those were moves of political expediency. I can swallow hard and overlook some of Mitt's previous positions considering he was a Republican governor with a Democrat legislature in a liberal state. Is Romney my ideal conservative? No, but I do believe as president anything that Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor and Mitch McConnell send Romney, he will sign. And I know that those gentlemen are true conservatives. Consider these questions. If elected, will Romney appoint conservative judges? Will he abolish Obamacare? Will he strongly support Israel? Will Romney encourage domestic energy exploration? Will he maintain the strength of our military? Will Romney cut spending? Will he push serious tax reform? Will he demand entitlement reform? I believe the answer to all these questions is yes. He may not be Ronald Reagan, but I can live with this platform over what the Obama administration is doing. Dear Mark: I am tired of the Republican primaries. I understand that choosing a president is important, but it's overshadowing all the other major news stories.
Major newspapers and other media outlets across the country should be running the budget deficit as the lead story with numerous investigative follow-ups and editorials. Instead, we get 24-hour-a-day coverage of the catfight between Newt and Mitt. Trillion dollar deficits represent a failure of government, yet that isn't making news. When will somebody pay attention? — Mack the Knife Dear Mack: Hopefully enough people will listen by November, and Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will be hearing the sound of a doorknob hitting them you know where. You're right, though — the budget deficit is a failure of President Obama, CONGRESS and the federal government in general. But what's another trillion to politicians when the national debt is already at $16 trillion? If America is going to hell in a handbasket, Washington is trying to take the express lane. Don't look for any solutions from Obama this year, as his campaign will center on blaming Republicans for obstructing his tax plan as the reason for the deficit. Concerning Obama's so-called solution, Republican Paul Ryan put it best when interviewed by Chris Wallace. Ryan said: "Implementing the president's proposed tax increases only covers 8 percent of his proposed spending increases. The other 92 percent of the president's spending increases are borrowed money." Seems to me the media performing their due diligence would hound the administration as to where the money is coming from to pay for the remaining 92 percent.
