Has Barack Obama learned nothing in three years? During his State of the Union address, he promised "a blueprint for an economy." But economies are crushed by blueprints. An economy is really nothing more than people participating in an unfathomably complex spontaneous network of exchanges aimed at improving their material circumstances. It can't even be diagrammed, much less planned. And any attempt at it will come to grief.
Politicians like Obama believe they are the best judges of how we should conduct our lives. Of course a word like "blueprint" would occur to the president. He, like most who want his job, aspires to be the architect of a new society.
But we who love our lives and our freedom say: No, thanks. We need no social architect. We need liberty under law. That's it.
Obama — and most Republicans are no different — doesn't understand the real liberal revolution that transformed civilization. The crux of that revolution is that law should define general visible rules of just conduct, applicable to all, with no eye to particular outcomes. In other words, as Nobel laureate F.A. Hayek taught, the only "purpose" of law is to enable us all to pursue our individual purposes in peace.
If Obama really wanted, as he says, a society in which "everybody gets a fair shot," he would work to shrink government so that the sphere of freedom could expand. Instead, he expands government and raises taxes on wealthier people, as though giving politicians more money were a way to make society better. Instead, the interventionist state rigs the game on behalf of special interests.
What should Obama have said in his speech? Here's what I wish he'd said:
Our debt has passed $15 trillion. It will reach Greek levels in just 10 years.
But if we make reasonable cuts to what government spends, our economy can grow us out of our debt. Cutting doesn't just make economic sense, it is also the moral thing to do. Government is best which governs least.
We'll start by closing the Department of Education, which saves $100 billion a year. It's insane to take money from states only to launder it through Washington and then return it to states.
Next, we'll close the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
That saves $41 billion. We had plenty of housing in America before a department was created.
Then we eliminate the Commerce Department: $9 billion. A government that can't count votes accurately should not try to negotiate trade. We will eliminate all corporate welfare and all subsidies. That means agriculture subsidies, green energy subsidies, ethanol subsidies and so on. None of it is needed.
I propose selling Amtrak. Why is government in the transportation business? Let private companies compete to run the trains.
And we must finally stop one of the biggest assaults on freedom and our pocketbook: the war on drugs. I used drugs. It's immoral to imprison people who do what I did and now laugh about.
Still, all these cuts combined will only dent our deficit. We must cut Medicare, Social Security and the military.
I know. Medicare and Social Security are popular. But they are unsustainable. The only way to cut costs and still have medical innovation is to free the market. So I propose that we repeal Obamacare immediately. My proposal was a mistake. We should repeal all government interference in the medical and insurance industries, including licensing. It all impedes competition.
We must shrink the military's mission to true national defense. That means pulling our troops out of Germany, Japan, Italy and dozens of other countries. America cannot and should not try to police the world.
Those cuts will put America on the road to solvency. But that's not enough. We also need economic growth.
Our growth has stalled because millions of pages of regulations make businesses too fearful to invest. Entrepreneurs don't know what the rules — or taxes — will be tomorrow.
All destructive laws must go. I endorse the Stossel Rule: For every new law passed, we must repeal two old ones.
OK, Obama will never say that.
But I can dream, can't I?

I think sometimes politicians believe that everything free people do that the politicians disagree with is like a smoker who wants to quit but needs their friends to intervene.
We, the addicts, are engaging in our behavior (using fossil fuels, eating sodium and trans-fats, buying the houses we want, using the medicine we want, buying the products we want, watching TV when we want, refusing to excercise unless we feel like it...etc) and we know it is wrong for us. We feel so bad but we wont stop unless those options are taken away. We have just been fooled by the evil corporations into doing it and now we can't help ourselves.
We want so much to change (riding our bikes, eating low-sodium and monounsaturated fats, living in government approved housing, using FDA approved medicine, buying approved and properly screened products, avoiding TV and excercising 2 hours per day...etc) but we need help. We need the government to come in and take away our options so we stop making our bad choices. We'll be so grateful once they've forced us off our bad habits and we'll be so much happier. We're just waiting for government to come in and save us from our weak selves and only allow us to do what they know is right for us.
While this seems obsurd you know that many politicians believe this.

You and your followers should frame and save this piece. (I will)
When the destructive policies of Entitlement Slavery comes crashing about the heads of the Entitlement Slaves and their owners, as it did in the USSR, is in Cuba and will here, we can all shout, we told you so.
We will of course have to shout, because by then the communications infrastructure will have ceased to exist and shouting or smoke signals will be that which is left.
Thanks again Mr. Stossel, I hear my frustration and near despair in your words.

I would also push for an addendum for all oaths of public office: "I swear that I will never propose, promote or vote for any law which violates the liberty of any honorable citizen. When notice of such transgression is received, I will immediately tender my resignation ad step aside so that the runner-up in my election can take my place."
This requires no changes to public law, no revisions to the Constitution, only to the rules of conduct. Heaven knows that Congress is rife with rules . . . some of which were pulled from where the sun don't shine. State legislators could put some teeth into this rule and recall any elected official demonstrated to have breached this rule of conduct.

Americans simply fail to realize that legislators and regulators pass laws to help themselves, not us. Every law, every tax, every regulation, every subsidy, every entitlement makes them more powerful. It makes us more dependent on them. Are we truly the "land of the free and home of the brave" or American sheeple, allowing government to shear and flock us.

Mr. Stossel,
I have always loved your work! This piece is superlative! I agree with everything you said.
It's funny, though. There is only one candidate running in this election that I can think of that espouses the same ideas and positions that you do. Even your employer, FOX news, tends to blow him off. The main stream media certainly do, as well. Perhaps so they can funnel the thinking of the sheeple into their handpicked, bread and circuses candidates of Romney and Gingrich.
Please keep up the excellent commentary and pushing for Liberty and a common sense fiscal policy for as long as you are allowed to do so. If America keeps going the way it is headed, there's no telling when you may lose that right!
Thank you.

John,
I like your show and agree with most of your thoughts and points of view. However, last night you had a segment with Sarah Palin in which she incorrectly used the word "subscribe" at least four times insread of the correct word "ascribe". I don't understand why no one on Fox ever calls her on her english language deficit. She is embarrassing to Fox. Is she really worth her $500,000 contract? Every time she speaks it is fodder for her left wingnut critics.

The military is the single worst waste of money. Today we hear that we've blown a TRILLION DOLLARS on a new fighter development. The military has become a second welfare program. I'd bet not 1 in 100 people in the military has fired a gun since basic training. And not 1 in 10,000 has fired at an enemy. Yet the so-called conservative talk shows idolize the military. President Eisenhower warned us to beware of the military-industrial complex. And he was the general who won the war in Europe during WW-II. His words have been forgotten.

You know I once really liked Fox News and Fox Business, but since Glenn Beck has left, you people are afraid to say anything about Obama proving that he is a citizen, were his parents? where did he get his social security number (a dead man)? Why is his school records and other records closed so the citizens of this country cannot know the truth? You put a man through hell on earth to make him a federal judge. But you guys won't pursue this imposters background! Why are you guys so afraid of the Naacp and the liberals? I am so sick and tired of you guys afraid of telling the truth for you might offend someone! Sodomy used to be against the law in my state and others! You won't even tell the truth about Islam, Mohammed was a child molester! Islam is about ruling the whole world, and you're afraid to even tell the truth about that?
I know you won't answer any of this, you're afraid of offending some queer, or muslim, or Obama and his goons! Fo heaven sakes man, don't you have any shame? Stand up and defend us Americans and our way of life!! We are a Christian NATION! Stand up for Israel! There is no such thing as a Palestinian! Is the Truth too hard for you? Please take a stand for the truth while thier is still time! Obama should be impeached along with Eric Holder, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank and the rest of those socialist queers! Michele Obama hates America and so does Obama, Read his book, Dreams of my Father! He is a felon, car theive, dope smoking queer! He hates Christianity, thats why he has to have all symbols of Christ covered up before He appears! The man won't even put his hand over his heart when the Pledge of Allegiance is said.
If America is destroyed it will be on the shoulders of you guys at Fox News. The last hope of Truth on the airways! Do Something. You have the Platform! Be a Rosa Parks! Paul Revere, Apostle Paul. Go against the system! You will be greatly remembered and honored! I along with many others are waiting and watching!
