It was a very tough week. Limbs flying in Boston. Ricin in the mail to the president and a senator. The Newtown families, bewildered in the White House, unable to understand how a bill that 90 percent of the public supports, that no one has offered a coherent reason to oppose, that was drafted by two of the NRA's strongest supporters in the Senate could go down in an exercise of petty politics at its worst. Enough. What more can I say? This.
There is a wonderful and important movie that will be playing in theaters near you for one week beginning Friday, April 19. The name of the movie is "Girl Rising" (girlrising.com). It is about nine girls in nine countries telling stories (with the help of women writers from their own countries with whom they were paired) of their own lives, which is to say lives of tragedy and hopelessness rescued by courage and determination — and school.
You cannot make a better investment in the developing world than educating a girl. It is that simple. If you don't understand this, or if you do and you want to feel that there is more to the world than bombs exploding and ricin in envelopes and petty politicians playing parliamentary games, go to your local theater and let them touch your heart.
"I feel as though I have power. ... I can do anything. And I have important things to do." — Suma, Nepal
This has been a week when I didn't feel that way.
I remember, years ago, attending a talk by Mavis Leno, who was way ahead of the curve on how women were being treated by the Taliban. It must have been the late '90s, and she was trying to get the world to focus on the oppression of Afghan girls and women and how you could and should judge a country based on how it treats its women.
And its girls. She was right. Sadly, it took us a while to figure that out.
Kayce F. Jennings, senior producer of The Documentary Group (which she founded with her late husband, ABC anchor Peter Jennings), gets it. She produced the movie, believed in it and has been reaching out to old friends like me to get the message out. Peter would be so proud. This is so right — and it's especially so right now.
Two of the nine girls in the movie do not themselves portray their life stories. Too dangerous. That is the world. There is no escaping it. But their eyes — you can see their eyes — burn with hope.
You can't help but feel lucky in every way watching an orphaned girl picking plastic bags from the trash and dreaming not of Hollywood or stardom or of a prince on a white horse, but of a crisp white shirt and a school jumper and shelves full of books.
But there is a moment, too, when you may start thinking: When did I give up believing the world is a place I can change? When did I stop hoping and start hiding? I feel like that, too often, watching videos like those from this week. The only time I do not regret the march of time — the wrinkles on my face, the arthritis in my hands — is when I think of the monumental challenges my children and yours will face as they try to make their way, peacefully and safely, in this dangerous and often evil world.
There has got to be a better answer than squinting to try to figure out the nationalities of the two Boston bombing suspects whose pictures have just been released so we can focus on whom to hate right now or figure out who could hate us that much.
Choose life, we say. Choose hope. Nine girls are rising at your local theater. Millions more could be following them. If they have the courage and the hope, so should we.

Correct me if I wrong, which I'm not, and I'll prove again you're a huge HYPOCRITE!! 1. Most Americans still support the Death Penalty, so according to you and all the other LIBERAL HYPOCRITES in the news media, because there is a majority of Americans supporting "something" in your case Gun Control it should be law. 2. Twice California voters voted against Gay Marriage, and using your and other LIBERALS own words that majority support should mean that whatever is in the majority should be enacted by Congress!!!
Prove me wrong!!!!
Nuff Said...Dennis

Estrich states “ It was a very tough week” but then dismisses the home events in a single paragraph, ignores the unfolding horrors of the Jihadist, Islamist attack on Boston, ignores the fact that Boston is in lock down because if Islamism and Jihadists and ignores this wholly corrupt, wholly dishonest,Islam pandering and Islam enabling Admin's attempts to cover up Saudi connections to the bombing and to the bombers, which will all become clear next week.
What will also become clear next week will be the media's and the Admin's attempts to falsely portray these two murderous brothers as “lone wolves”, to whitewash Islam, to play down the patterns of Muslim terrorism and then to return to endeavoring to deprive honest citizens of the means of defense of themselves and their property.
Per Estrich, nothing to see in Boston folks ! Just Islam doing what Islam does best but don't be afraid of “others” who may not be like you.
Recall, if you will that it was Estrich who, in 2006, argued before the US District Court in Worcester that funding Jihad was protected under the First Amendment as a religious right. True ! But that is how the left thinks.
Oh it has been a tough week, alright, tough for Estrich and the libtards and this Admin that is : and Lipka et al spare me your self –righteous prattle about expressing thoughts and prayers for the victims of the bombing, it is not the unfortunate, tragic victims to whom this is addressed.
Much to the chagrin of the likes of Estrich, to the chagrin of the entire left, to the chagrin of the entire media and to their fellow apologists for Islamism, the bombers turned out not to be a tea party conservatives who were angry over tax day, but Islamist Jihadists originally from Chechnya whose families were for some unexplainable reason granted asylum in the US.
And there are those in Congress, including the N. Veit Nam's poison chalice gift to America, McCain, who are about to relax the immigration laws and to make welcome, God knows how many Jihadists into the US. One could not make this lunacy up!
One recalls the massacre at Beslan school in 2004 by Chechnyan Islamists in which 334 people were slaughtered including 184 children. I wonder if those horrific events come to minds of the leftists this week as they exculpated Islam, pursued gun grabbing and opposed guards in schools ? I doubt it!
But never forget, Islam is a religion of peace and CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood whose members occupy high office in this Admin and who influence this Admin and which together have logged over 400 visits to the Whitehouse since 2008, mean us no harm. Yeah right !
But, I forget, we know that Islam means us no harm, because, the Islamists, Estrich, her fellow travelers, and barry said so. The unfortunate thing is that the LIV's believe it and actually believe that barry will protect them from Islamist terror. The poor souls in Benghazi thought they would be protected too. Recall how that turned out? Death, lies, deceit and cover up, all aided by an accomplice media.
Wake up and look around people.
Moreover, and to the further chagrin of the likes of Estrich and to the gun grabbing tyrannical left, the Senate threw out the gun grab legislation.
Oh barry was mad as hell, but it not because the bill failed. The Bill was always intended to fail. It was however intended to fail in the House not the Senate.
Barry boy was pissed, not because of any concern over the tragic parents of the innocents murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which grieving parents he had callously used as pawns and props in his political charade but because his Dem controlled Senate threw out the gun grab, depriving him of the opportunity of blaming the House.
Too bad, so sad never mind Barry. LOL !

You and several of the other responders seemed to have missed the point of Ms. Estrich's commentary. She was writing about a specific movie, not about current events. She isn't required to address the topics you or I may want her to address. Not every commentary has to be on a politically hot topic. It is her blog and she can comment on anything she wants to comment on. Shouldn't we respect that and address her comments/subject and not write about our own internal demons or interests? I really had nothing to say on this topic (not having seen the movie), so I initially had no intention of sending in a comment on this blog. But as long as I'm here...
JW correctly noted:
Obama "...was mad as hell, but it not because the bill failed..."
Yes! And it was pretty amusing to watch after my amazement of seeing the POTUS pouting on live television had worn off. A sad commentary on Obama's 'leadership' abilities. The words "Churchillian" or "Johnsonian" just don't come to mind.

Re: Old Navy
I did not miss the point of the piece at all. I recognized it for what it truly was.
And I, in turn, suggest that you miss the real point which is this:
Given that the opening paragraph by Estrich was a lip service bemoaning of the terror events of the past week and a real bemoaning of the defeat of the gun grab (and accordingly the piece was not written for pubilcation weeks ago) the rest of the piece can rightly be seen as a conscious avoidance of the important issues. It was a craven avoidance of issues previously and directly raised this week by Estrich, to wit, her declared hopes that the culprits would not be Jihadists, that is to say they would be tea party types.
It was a craven real time avoidance of the events unfolding before our eyes in her declared prior home town, caused directly by Jihad, something which she previously defended in court as a religious and First Amendment right.
It was a craven avoidance conveniently dressed up as a commentary about a movie.
I having no interest in the movie and accordingly chose to respond to Estrich's first paragraph and chose to note her avoidance of the real time issues with which the country is presently consumed.
I expect her to return at some later date to the present issues but not until she along with the rest of the obama propaganda wing have colluded to exculpate and to dilute so far as they collectively can, the part that Islamism and this Admin's pandering to it played in the events in Boston.
JW stated:
"It was a craven real time avoidance of the events unfolding before our eyes in her declared prior home town, caused directly by Jihad, something which she previously defended in court as a religious and First Amendment right. It was a craven avoidance conveniently dressed up as a commentary about a movie."
This argument only works if Ms. Estrich had some obligation to address the topics you find important. Admittedly, those topics are more interesting to you and I than the subject movie. However, she has no such obligation. This is her blog and she can write about any topic she finds interesting. Perhaps she had intended to write a second blog on this topic once the crisis had passed. Perhaps she will never write another blog about this stuff. We can't force her to write about anything she finds uninteresting. We can only comment on her thoughts as expressed in her blog. Your comments might have been better placed in the responses to the last article she wrote.
Speaking of issue avoidance...
I'll admit that this case was resolved much faster than I thought it might be, primarily because the two terrorists made some fundamental mistakes and thankfully did things that revealed who they were and where they were. How do you feel about all your predictions regarding the ethnicity of the terrorists now. I thought that "Jihadists" were going to get a "get out of jail" pass from the dear leader while only right wing nuts were going to be subject to rapid justice. What happened?

Re: Old Navy
Of course Estrich may write about whatever subject Estrich chooses. I have not argued otherwise. I care not what subject Estrich writes about at any particular time. But the subjects Estrich chooses to write about and how Estrich writes about those subjects is telling as to her mindset and character.
I simply choose to argue that Estrich's exercise of subject choice , freely made, in this instance was to my mind, a craven act, calculated to avoid addressing the issues she had raised strongly just a few days ago and which issues were being played out on national TV and radio as she wrote a puff piece on education abroad.
I am truly glad that one of the Islamic scum is already dead and that the other piece of Islamic scum has been captured. For him I hope whatever info he has may be extracted quickly and that he also dies painfully in spiritual torment shortly thereafter. May they both rot in hell for eternity along with the rest of their murderous Islamic brethren.
As to my predictions. What can I say other than it seems I got it wrong this time. Oh well ! Never mind. One can't be entirely correct all of the time. I'll settle for 99% of the time.
But, that said, the two were Caucasian, could be said to be home grown and did not immediately look middle eastern. They could have been mistaken for what the left and the media and the Admin desperately wanted them to be, to wit, white Christian males of a right wing ideology.
Indeed, Estrich says "There has got to be a better answer than squinting to try to figure out the nationalities of the two Boston bombing suspects whose pictures have just been released so we can focus on whom to hate right now or figure out who could hate us that much"
Which raises the following additional issues. Firstly only an Islam pandering liberal could find fault with figuring out who hates us that much? To me it seems crucial to our security and safety.
Secondly unless one is honest and identifies Islam, or to keep some of the more sensitive happy "radical Islam" [I see no real distinction] as the enemy, then we are doomed to suffer more and more such attacks as the Jihadists sense and prey upon our weakness.
As to the get out of jail cards, maybe dear leader had matters taken out of his hands Or maybe events and technology simply overtook desires. Who knows? That said the matter is not yet fully played out.
The Saudi "person of interest" in respect of whom Napolitano perjured herself will likely be deported, which is to say given the get out of jail free card. In this the Admin may yet, unless other matters intervene, do as I predicted.
In the week that was, Ms. Estrich missed one major story (but then again every liberal ignored it). The gruesome details of the Kermit Gosnell trial goes to great length how he killed many more than Newtown or Boston. That third trimester babies born alive, crying struggling for life only to have their spinal cords cut is a national shame. Even most people I know that support abortion rights are not for killing babies delivered alive.
At the end of her piece, she says "Choose life, we say. Choose hope." But in many cases, life is denied with her support.
Susan Estrich is now on the path of apologizing for the Boston Marathon bombers. "They came here as innocent children" These "young men" "we shouldn't let this incident influence our views or cautionary actions with regard to immigration" "these are hard working immigrants"(even though it is known these murderers were on full public assistance. The younger killer romanticized how he had a right for righteous revenge because he was different-celebrating diversity - his friends said. So everyone follow this stupid ass Estrich and maybe then we can have several thousand killed , she will no doubt apologize and excuse those terrorists conduct as well.

Not only has every liberal pundit and commentator for the last six weeks, chosen to act as if the Gosnell child murder factory did not exist but every major TV news network and every so called major newspaper did precisely the same, as did every member of this Admin. For a full six weeks they have all completely blanked the gruesome details of the abortionists "craft" and continue to do so.
And these are precisely the same entities that would try to persuade us that the lives of children are the closest thing to their hearts. Liars all !
The death of a child, depending upon the circumstances of the death (being tortured, mutilated and murdered by a sadist abortionist does not count even if perpetrated on one of their very own) is seen by liberals and leftists as no more than an opportunity: as no more than a political stone to throw at the opponents of whatever leftist cause can be piggy backed unto that death no matter how tenuously.
Liberalism truly is reflective of mental disorder.

No matter how hard the liberals try, they won't change the nature and teachings of Islam - that women are second class citizens and merely pawns of the male members.
