Michael Thomas Morgan was born October 14, 1957, in Conyers, Ga.  He graduated from Rockdale County High School in 1975. He attended Young Harris College in the North Georgia mountains, where he became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity, and earned an Associate of Fine Arts degree in 1977.  Mike also studied graphic design at the University of Georgia in Athens, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1979.  While in Athens, Mike contributed illustrations to the campus newspaper, The Red and Black.

After graduation, Mike began working as an advertising artist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  He also freelanced editorial cartoons for his hometown newspaper, The Rockdale Citizen.  In 1981, Mike became editorial cartoonist/newsroom artist for The Macon Telegraph.  While in Macon, Mike became a member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.  His work was reprinted in several national publications, including Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year (1982, 1983, 1984, and 1985 editions).

In 1986, Mike became a candidate for ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church, leaving his job at the Macon newspaper to enroll as a full-time student at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University in Atlanta.  While in theology school, Mike served as youth minister at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the Emory campus.  He was inducted into the Theta Phi international honor society in 1988, and received the Master of Divinity degree from Emory in 1989, magna cum laude.  Upon graduating, Mike was ordained deacon and appointed to serve as associate pastor of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in downtown Macon.  In June 1991, he was ordained elder and admitted as a member in full connection to the South Georgia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

Also in 1991, Mike began drawing “For Heaven’s Sake!,” a weekly comic strip that celebrates the faith and pokes fun at the foibles of the congregation of the fictional “Mainline Memorial Church.”  First published in the religion section of The Macon Telegraph and in the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, “For Heaven’s Sake!” is now distributed by Creators Syndicate to several newspapers and denominational publications around the nation.  In 1992, Mike became a member of the National Cartoonists Society.

Mike has served as pastor of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Macon (1992-1996), the First United Methodist Church of Hazlehurst, Ga., (1996-1998), and Philadelphia United Methodist Church in Jeff Davis County (also 1996-1998).

In June 1998, Mike was appointed editor of the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, the official newspaper for Georgia United Methodists.  In June 2000, Mike returned to parish ministry as pastor of Crossroads United Methodist Church in his hometown of Conyers.

Since 1980, Mike has been married to former Karen Carter of Waycross, Ga.  Karen and Mike have two sons:  Thomas, born in 1984, and Daniel, born in 1989.
