About Jessica Leigh

Jessica Leigh is a writer, an editor and a mean racecar driver. OK, go-karts. In the eight years that she's been editing weekly and daily advice professionally, she's come to this conclusion: Advice is questionable. Questionable in the sense of community and discussion. Questionable in the sense of certitude.

Jessica has an autographed Far Side cartoon hanging in her home that shows a road that forks. A steady stream of couples file to the right -- past a sign that reads "The Beaten Path." And a lone couple, George and his wife, veers left -- past a sign that reads "Off." The woman says, "I don't know if this is such a good idea, George." Consensus isn't always right, and neither is the lone wolf. Sometimes there is no right. Sometimes what someone wants even more than "right" is attention, compassion, corroboration, information or to have their head yanked out of their derriere.

For the past five years, Jessica has advised dog owners by way of a weekly column as to how to more effectively communicate with their canine counterparts: Use your words. Just know that your dog doesn't understand them.

In addition to writing advice on dog-rearing, she's edited advice on child-rearing, spouse-rearing, partner-rearing, parent-rearing, friend-rearing, enemy-rearing and, most importantly, self-rearing. While studying literature and screenwriting at the University of Texas at Austin, Jessica worked for the American Lung Association -- until they caught her smoking in the parking lot. Some things shouldn't require an advice columnist.

Jessica divides her time unevenly between Wonder Valley, Los Angeles and Austin. She lives with her two dogs, neither of whom listen to her, either. Follow her on Twitter @sicaleigh.
