The Victoria was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe. A type of trading ship called a nao or carrack, it was one of five ships in the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan that left Spain in 1519. In the course of the voyage, four ships were lost, and about 240 crew members, including Magellan himself, perished. Only the Victoria with 18 crew members made it back to Spain safely.
