In response to a recent column, reader Gina Lee points out that although he was a friend of the Beat movement poets and he was arrested on obscenity charges for publishing Allen Ginsberg's "Howl and Other Poems" in 1956, poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti did not classify himself as a Beat poet and considered his writing distinct from theirs.
