An Open and Shut Case: Doors

Doors are great communicators. When they are opened wide, they mean welcome. When they are opened slowly, they can cause anticipation. If a door creaks, it can instill fear. And a slammed door conveys that someone is upset or in a rush.

Doors create the first impression upon arrival at a place. They are a very important element in any building, one that defines boundaries between public and private realms and even between rooms. Their design also might serve as a prelude to the architecture and decor of a building.

Doors are made of different materials, depending on their use and location. They can be made of wood, in solid or hollow styles, veneered in exotic woods, and painted in any color, gloss or matte. They also can be made of innovative material such as stainless steel, aluminum and tempered glass, or a combination of all of the above.

A heavy solid door has the power to create the perception of a solid construction, which is why many builders and homeowners don't mind spending some extra cash on such a door. Another tip is to choose the largest door possible for your home, while keeping it in proportion to the rest of the home.

Sometimes doors define the architectural style of a place and reveal the hierarchy of place. A plain design serves a utilitarian function, while a more ornate or embellished door could symbolize the entrance to an important space.

Those who follow the principles of feng shui know that the positioning of doors has a lot to do with the well-being of those who live in the home. They also believe a red front door is good for bringing in good fortune and is a welcoming sign. Americans also believe in the color red as a positive force, which explains why there are so many churches and homes with red doors.

The hardware selected for the doors throughout your home is equally important. Traditionally, doors have been hinged, allowing them to fully swing open and shut. A current trend is a derivative of the pocket door: a sliding door with surface-mounted hardware reminiscent of old barn doors. These floating doors have a contemporary appeal, and the hardware is typically sleek, in materials such as stainless steel and titanium.

The cleaning and maintenance of your front door are equally important for the health of your home and family. It is believed that a regular cleansing of the front door is beneficial to your home both physically and spiritually. This maintenance removes dust and dirt that harbor bacteria and germs. It is also good practice to open your doors periodically to allow fresh air into your home. As an added bonus, this practice serves as a sign to your neighbors that you are open to friendship. Just make sure your door doesn't slam shut!
