Decorating the Table

Nothing is more telling of the mettle your host is made of than the decor of their dining table. Some hosts are intimidated by the challenge of preparing a nice meal for guests and on top of that having to set a table befitting of both the occasion and the meal. Aside from the proper place for utensils and plates — which I won't cover here since table etiquette is a lengthy topic in and of itself — the decoration of the table is an important ingredient of entertaining. A savvy host should be prepared well in advance of an event or dinner party to ensure a memorable occasion for guests. Yes, you are trying to impress.

The most basic decorative element is a tablecloth. A white tablecloth, although simple and common in most bistros and restaurants, denotes a certain level of formality in a household. Printed or colored tablecloths are considered less formal and are great at concealing spills. Keep in mind that the fabric of the tablecloth will contribute to the overall feeling of the event. Tablecloths are available in plain cotton or linen and fine damasks or brocade fabrics. Just make sure when selecting such an item that it can be easily laundered or dry-cleaned.

If your dining table has a beautiful decorative motif or is of an unusual material, you may want to showcase it. In this situation, some may opt for individual placemats for each diner. Placemats allow the tabletop to shine while still protecting the immediate area around the diner. The same guidelines apply in terms of color, material and care.

But just what to put at the center of the table? The most familiar centerpiece is a floral bouquet of some sort. This is the most common and is quite acceptable. It is preferred that the flowers selected not be overly odorous as to overpower the dining experience.

Other centerpieces could be a grouping of vases, glass or ceramic, in a linear or circular arrangement, depending on the size and shape of the dining table. These could be filled with cut roses or small groupings of flowers. Likewise, a footed bowl filled with select fruits or greenery has always been a classic in table landscapes. A contemporary trend involves tall clear vases with floral arrangements at the top.

Candlelight plays like magic at any table. This is one vertical element of the tabletop that can be at eyelevel. The flickering of light adds sparkle, reflects off the crystal and silverware, and gives everyone a natural healthy glow. Even the simplest of tables benefit from some candlelight. If candelabras are not your thing, try using small votives in smaller glass containers scattered about. I recommend using unscented candles.

A collection of figurines, pottery or items of similar interest could serve as an effective centerpiece. Let us not forget art! A small sculpture or a grouping of sculptures brings a certain elegance and almost certainly will provide interesting conversation and discussion for your affair. Almost any theme can be featured for that perfect dinner party, brunch or special event. Let your imagination run wild.

Decorating your table, whether for guests or for family, makes even the simplest meal feel like an elegant feast. There is really only one absolute rule: Diners should be able to see one another and carry on conversations without an interrupted view. So keep any tablescape either low to the table or exuberantly above the line of sight of your guests.
