You will not be seeing three talk show icons after September. Charles Osgood, who has hosted CBS' "Sunday Morning" for over 22 years, is retiring. Osgood took over after Charles Kuralt died, and he has won multiple Emmys. The bow-tied journalist will say farewell on Sept. 25 with a 90-minute show. Almost 84, he will continue his daily "Osgood Report" on CBS Radio. No replacement has been named.
CNN has fired Dr. Drew Pinsky from his HLN talk show. Pinsky got in trouble when he said in an interview he had concerns about Hillary Clinton's health and her ability to serve as president. There is nothing to indicate there is anything to back up these assumptions. The American Medical Association frowns on the doctor diagnosing non-patients. Since Barry Goldwater ran for president in 1964, it has been illegal for a psychiatrist to comment on a person's mental health if they are not treating the person. When Goldwater was running for office, an article was released listing his mental "issues." Pinsky left his VH1 "Celebrity Rehab" show after he was criticized when five former stars on his show died of drug-related issues. Pinsky's last show is Sept.23.
After a 12-year run, HLN has canceled Nancy Grace's show. Her contract, which was up in October, was not renewed. Ashley Banfield is set to host a more news-oriented show.
The harshest axing of all was Comedy Central's "The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore." Wilmore's show replaced Stephen Colbert's. Willmore's ratings never soared. The comedian was told on a Tuesday that his last show would be Thursday. The world of show business can be cruel. Just ask me: One day I was driving to do my radio show, and I learned someone else had taken over my time slot that day via the radio. They forgot to call me.
A Martinez (Eduardo "Days of Our Lives") has gone from contract to non-contract. The always-busy actor said it was his choice. He also says Eduardo will continue on the Salem scene
Miles Gaston Villanueva confirmed last week's episode, in which his "The Young and the Restless" character Luca was arrested for his misdeeds, was indeed his last. The actor is slated to guest star on "Jane the Virgin."
Lifetime has canceled "Devious Maids" after four years. The Susan Lucci star-vehicle ended with a gory murder.
Next year will be the last season for two popular series. "Grimm" and "Pretty Little Liars" will end in 2017.
The lovely lady who paid for Paul and Chris' dinner on the Sept. 1 episode of "Y&R" was Lee Bell. She is mother to Laura Lee Bell, who has played Chris since she was a teenager. Doug Davidson (Paul) has been on the show longer than any other actor. Sept. 1 marked the show's 11,000th episode.
"Y&R" is casting for an actor in his mid-30s to play a member of a major family. Some are guessing it may be a re-cast for Justin Hartley, who has landed a starring role in the acclaimed NBC show "This Is Us."
