What do you do when you have the coronavirus? You head to the hospital. They transfer you to another hospital and then ship you to a nursing home. How do I know this? It has been my life for over a week.
You also watch lots of TV.
Several on the stations offer what has been called the Golden Age of television. Though it's more like the Rust Belt. I cannot believe which shows hold up and which shows have me hitting my head in disbelief that I often planned my childhood nights around them.
"F Troop": OK. I liked it because I thought the star, Ken Berry, was cute. Speaking of cute, Tom Selleck is cute but his acting is pretty lame in "Magnum, P.I." And I hate to say it because he is a really nice guy.
"The Honeymooners" is great. It also has one of the best comic lines. Ralph is teaching Norton to golf. Ralph tells him to address the ball. Norton says, "Hello, ball." I am still chucking. Maybe it's the fever.
"Cheers" holds up. "The Donna Reed Show" does not. "Leave It to Beaver" is great. The shows that work do so because they are character-driven. This is why "Modern Family," "The Big Bang Theory" and "Young Sheldon" work. In my mind, "The Goldbergs" does not. How irritating is the mother? Very.
"The Munsters"? Kill me now. But bring on "The Addams Family"!
"Hill Street Blues" is a gem. "Monk" has great acting and lousy plots. "Hee Haw" seems to be about poking fun at folks from the South. "Petticoat Junction" just uses southern accents and the laughs start coming — or not.
Next, there are the Westerns. "Rawhide" with Clint Eastwood and "Wagon Train." "Wagon Train" was a great sprawling Western. Its core characters are often played by lots of folks who went on to act in soaps, film and primetime.
"Gomer Pyle" is painful to watch — and I love Jim Nabors. "The Carol Burnett Show" is an ear-tugging good time. Shows that starred kids such as "Family Affair" are sad because so many of the kids did not have happy childhoods or adulthoods.
On "Mission Impossible," I never get the setup. "Man From Uncle" star David McCallum is still a baby doll on "NCIS." "Barney Miller" is so fun. It features Max Gail, who now plays Mike on "General Hospital."
I have to sign off now. It is time for "Patty Duke." Please make it as good as I remember!
