PRIME TIME
ABC is asking for the next dance when "Dancing With the Stars" 18th season premieres on March 17 with a new look, a new sound and, for a change, real stars. For the last few years, the stars often had a "who are they?" tarnish. Not this year. They really are stars. Those hoping to win the dancing trophy include:
Drew Carey — Drew Carey is a stand-up comic turned actor and producer who had the distinction of having two hit shows simultaneously: the long-running comedy "The Drew Carey Show," which ran from 1995-2004 and the improv/sketch show "Whose Line Is it Anyway?" In July 2007, he was named the host of "The Price Is Right," He partners with Cheryl Burke.
Meryl Davis — Paired in 1997, Meryl Davis, 27, and her partner Charlie White, 26, are the longest-running ice-dancing partnership in the history of United States figure skating. This year, they were the first USA ice dancers to get the gold. Meryl Davis partners with Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
Charlie White is also hitting the dance floor. He partners with SHARNA BURGESS.
Danica McKellar — Danica McKellar, best known as Winnie Cooper on "The Wonder Years" and Elsie Snuffin on "The West Wing," Her recent acting roles include appearances on "How I Met Your Mother" and "The Big Bang Theory." Danica McKellar partners with Valentin Chmerkovskiy.
Diana Nyad — Last year, the swimmer achieved her 35-year-old dream of becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida. Nyad is not one to quit. Diana Nyad joins first-time professional partner Henry Byalikov.
Billy Dee Williams — Whose staring roles include "Lady Sings the Blues," opposite Diana Ross. Lando Calrissian in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Return of the Jedi." He is currently staring in in the blockbuster film "The Lego Movie." In 2006, the NAACP recognized Williams for his immense contribution to the arts by awarding him the Lifetime Achievement Award. He partners with Emma Slater.
Host Tom Bergeron is changing partners for the fourth time. Erin Andrews is his latest dance partner. She replaces Brooke Burke-Charvet, who first appeared on "DWTS" as a contestant — and eventual winner — of season seven. She cohosted for seasons 10 through 17. She succeeded Samantha Harris (who replaced Lisa Canning starting with season two).
The Harold Wheeler band was let go after a 17-year run. Ray Chew, who was the music director for American Idol, steps in.
The show is even going to ask, "Do you mind if I cut in?" In a first for "Dancing With the Stars," the competition will feature a new game-changing twist called "The Switch Up." America will be given the power to vote and change celebrity and professional dance pairings. This new rule will affect all couples as they will be required to switch partners at a point in the season. Never before have dance partnerships been split up during the course of competition.
