Pouncing on Animal Prints Now

There's one classic that will always get your wardrobe up and growling with a touch of the exotic — animal prints roar into another season once again. The '70s may have been a fashion circus of the popular prints, when Yves Saint Laurent paraded his models down his Paris runways, but do animal prints ever really go out of style? We think not.

"As far as I'm concerned, animal prints are a neutral," says Jenna Lyons, creative director of J.Crew. And fashion designers seem to agree, reinterpreting them year after year with fresh inspirations that will keep our closets purring.

Here are some of the best updates to be on the prowl for right now:

—A swimsuit. Summer's not over yet. And if you travel, you know you may want to pick up a swimsuit in November when you may be able to catch one of these on sale. Just like the black one-piece, an animal print maillot or even a two-piece bikini or tankini top will be another classic to have in your swim wardrobe.

—A colorful blouse. While the camel-based leopard print may be what we automatically think of as far as traditional animal prints go, this year, the prints are more and more colorful. Think a hot pink jaguar print blouse like the one from Givenchy.

—A pencil skirt. Tops are not the only thing that gets a little wild in animal prints. The go-to skirt of all time is reinterpreted in an updated print that will give your professional wardrobe a walk on the wild style. Try one this season in a graphic cheetah print and pair with dark tights and ankle boots.

—A bomber jacket. A fashion favorite this year, this shorter, sporty jacket provides a great backdrop for a menagerie of animal motifs. Check out the whimsical swan prints on separates in Stella McCartney's fall collection.

—A great coat. Another way to top off your basics when the weather gets chilly is the animal print coat. Whether it's a sophisticated snakeskin print (Armani) or a funky coat splashed with honeybees (Gucci), this may be one of the best ways to give all your basics an instant fashion update.

—A power suit. More may be better this season. Consider wearing animal prints from head to toe in a pantsuit with matching trousers and jacket. Suit up in belted jackets worn over wide-leg pants or skirt teamed with a bow blouse. Mix and match these printed pieces with other neutrals in your closet.

—A knit sweater vest. The vest is one of the most versatile pieces you can add to your wardrobe at any time of the year. Just like a jacket, it can transform basics, especially when layered over anything from jeans and leggings. Prowl around for fun vests with catty appliques or camouflage-inspired animal prints.

—All the extras. From scarves to handbags to shoes, the iconic animal prints are making a huge imprint on the accessory scene this year...the perfect way to add just a touch of the wild things to your wardrobe. Hunt for handbags splashed with patchwork leopard prints to scarves buzzing with birds or cowboy boots blazing with giraffe graphics. Stick your neck out and start prowling around for these wild things now.
