Father's Day 2015: the Fashion Gift List for Him
Man up, and give Dad a gift that will make him smile this Father's Day. There are plenty of stylish ideas to please even the most hard-to-shop-for guys around. Take a look at these suggestions and see what the dad or husband on your gift list would love to unwrap this summer.
—The new Hawaiian shirt. It has often received a bad fashion rap as the quintessential favorite of the American tourist gone rogue in the huge shirts flowing with fauna, but this time around, the flower power of the past is slimmed down into more modern fits that are much more sophisticated in subtle colors and florals that don't scream at you from two blocks down the street. Check out these new "retro" Hawaiian shirts by Tommy Bahama at Nordstrom.
—The jogger pant. Another comfy favorite that is sure to please any guy on your gift list. While there are lots of different versions of this athletic drawstring knit pant with elasticized leg openings, they all provide easy style that's suitable for twentysomethings as well as elderly gentlemen. They all will love these casual pants that give "athleisure" fashion new meaning. AG has a great jogger at Saks.
—The chambray shirt. This soft cotton lightens up for the summertime, and if the guy on your list doesn't have one of these new fashion "basics" in his wardrobe, it's time to give him one. He'll wear it with everything. Chambray is a plain weave fabric with a colored yarn blended with white yarn, unlike denim, which is a woven twill fabrication and therefore heavier in weight. Chambray comes in lots of colors — blue is the most popular — but you can find tan, black, gray or other choices too.
—The checked shirt. Checks are filling in all the blanks when it comes to patterned shirts this summer. Plaids are on the comeback in colorful combinations that are sure to brighten up any man's warm-weather wardrobe. You can't go wrong with this gift — just be sure to get your size right! Gingham was a hit for spring, and it promises to be one of summer's favorites, too. The coral gingham at L.L.Bean is a refreshing gift pick.
—The new polo. OK, this is another tried-and-true guy gift. But this time around, make sure the polo shirt you pick up has that "something different" quality to it. How about a polo-style shirt with "ombre" striping? Think one color that fades into different shades for a whole new effect — one that will stand out in a sea of basic polos. Sean Jean has some of the best at Macy's.
—The new Bermuda shorts. Every guy needs a new pair of shorts in the summertime. And if your guy is stuck on the baggy look, then get him into a new pair of shorts that hit just above the knee. In colorful checks and plaids, these shorts are slimmer and trimmer and way more updated. Brooks Brothers has a wide selection.
—The floral tie. Don't be afraid to give your favorite guy a new tie. Just because he already has 50 in his closet doesn't mean he won't love a new one, especially if it's a little out of his fashion comfort zone. Break out of the boring silk dots and into some colorful floral or paisley designs. The Tie Bar has just about every color, pattern and style imaginable.
—The new sneaks. Summer is also a time when guys like to change up their footwear. When you look for a gift, go beyond flip-flops. Scope out the new sneakers that are retro-inspired, such as the classic Chuck Taylor by Converse or a new pair of soft suede loafers by Ugg.
—The shades of summer. Sunglasses: another necessity for everyone. Treat your favorite man to a pair of glasses that he will wear every day. Give him an instant fashion update with distinctive sunglasses trimmed with wood-grain frames (try the "Canby" glasses by Shwood). They'll match that wooden iPhone 6 case you gave him for his birthday.
—The "smell-good" gift. Every guy likes to receive a new cologne — one that he wouldn't necessarily buy himself. And if you like it, then chances are, he will too. At this time of year, there are all kinds of gift sets filled with extra products that will give you lots of bang for your buck. Just stroll down the aisle of your favorite department store and take a whiff. Hopefully, you'll miss the spritz blitz.
