Friendly People

Recently while in Tyler, Texas, my wife and I entered the Red Lobster restaurant and were pleasantly greeted by Tawanna, the young hostess who led us to a booth. Highlight No. 1.

After a brief moment, Stella, a "transplant" for New York who has been with Red Lobster for 10 years, engaged my wife in a pleasant and friendly conversation. Highlight No. 2.

She told us Myra would be our waitperson, and in a matter of seconds, Myra appeared. Stella had identified all of the wonderful specials for us. Myra pleasantly inquired if we were ready to order or just wanted to order our drinks first. We both requested iced tea and water, and I asked Myra to bring me a cup of the clam chowder, explaining that we would order our meals when she returned.

In only a few minutes, Myra appeared with the chowder, took our order and made her departure. The meal was delicious. Highlight No. 3.

We stopped by the grocery store on the way out of Tyler and had a pleasant interlude as we walked into the store. A young girl named Susie was walking out (her name was on her jacket), and I greeted her, "Susie, how are you?" She responded with the biggest smile I've ever seen, and it was obvious she thought she knew us and that we knew her. It was one of those little bright spots — highlight No. 4 — that make all of us happy.

Confession: We had been to Tyler before and had met other gracious, friendly people, and we expected to do exactly that. Message: When you meet people, expect them to be nice, kind and friendly. You stack the deck in your favor by being nice, friendly, kind and gracious yourself. Take that approach, and I'll see you at the top!
