My 8-month-old granddaughter Charlotte giggled as I held her and we bobbed in the turquoise waters of Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. James, my 2 1/2-year-old grandson, busily shaped sand into castles and critters under the watchful eyes of his parents. My husband, David, read on the chaise longue, intermittently looking up as our grandkids pierced the morning quiet with their laughter.
Updated: Sun Nov 17, 2019
214373054a19300d6789c53b421a8558 Find the Best Local Food in Turks and Caicos for 11/16/2019 Sat, 16 Nov 2019 00:00:00 -0800

By Candyce H. Near the tip of the peninsula, a blue Gothic church spire rose high above a set of timeless gray buildings; a thick fortress wall snaked up the hillside behind the town, ending at the ruins of a mysterious castle whose tales of triumph and tragedy now lay silent. This moment confirmed our decision to embark on a Danube River cruise during the holiday season.
Updated: Sun Nov 10, 2019
64566ad11cdd3d9e9a7ef91b6954cf97 Find a Lot of 'There' in Mazatlan for 11/09/2019 Sat, 09 Nov 2019 00:00:00 -0800

By Stuart Wasserman

Gertrude Stein's famous "there is no there there" line could never be said about Mazatlan, a port town on the Pacific northwestern coast of Mexico. It all centers around the Plaza Machado — the city's romantic Centro Historico and a romantic place that features New Orleans-style architecture: old houses and commercial buildings (including an opera house) that date from the 1870s and the 1880s. Just five blocks away is a U-shaped sandy beach called Olas Altas and a neighborhood of the same name. It means high waves, but in winter they are small but powerful and can launch a swimmer swiftly onto the sand.
Updated: Sat Nov 09, 2019
0e69b55739ca3f8d6e344064aa5f8afd Don't Overlook the Attractions of Dynamic Mexico City for 11/03/2019 Sun, 03 Nov 2019 00:00:00 -0700

Updated: Sun Nov 03, 2019
548df0f0739aea6df4b29887c118e880 Enjoy Western Beauty on Amtrak's Coast Starlight for 11/02/2019 Sat, 02 Nov 2019 00:00:00 -0700

By Sharon Whitley Larsen
Updated: Sat Nov 02, 2019
469eb864d217d6003af939120ba53eb6 Stargazing in Chile's Atacama Desert for 10/27/2019 Sun, 27 Oct 2019 00:00:00 -0700

By Patricia Woeber

When next you wish upon a star, the place to be is in Chile's Atacama Desert. When she launched into an allegro movement of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," her bow dancing across the strings, the video flashed to a fiddler in a mountain village playing the same piece, his movements mirroring hers. Next Rucner appeared in town on the digital version performing with the screen musician as local singers danced around them. All the while the live Rucner played identical music as her film doppelganger.
Updated: Sat Oct 12, 2019
05bff9e0180d297a52380639393b1029 Flights of Fancy: A Lesson in Falconry for 10/06/2019 Sun, 06 Oct 2019 00:00:00 -0700

By Gay Courter

Is there anything more wondrous than launching a falcon from your wrist, watching him soar into the sky and land where he wishes — and then having him return to you with a gentle pounce back on his perch and gobble a treat out of your gloved hand? Since childhood I've been fascinated by the ancient sport of falconry but never expected to fly a hawk myself until I discovered Ireland's School of Falconry on the magnificent grounds of Ashford Castle and booked their Hawk Walk.
Updated: Sun Oct 06, 2019
3cab386b1d9574fa140a09372ca7469c Mauthausen Concentration Camp: Never Forget for 10/05/2019 Sat, 05 Oct 2019 00:00:00 -0700

By Fyllis Hockman

The four central European capitals we visited on our Danube River cruise — Prague, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest — overwhelmed with their impressive history, expansive promenades and architectural grandeur. One night in 1967 the feature story was about Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of President John Kennedy, visiting Angkor Wat, which I assumed had just been discovered in a Cambodian jungle. I thought, how cool is that, an ancient civilization found deep in a forbidding jungle like in some B-movie. I guess I had been listening with just one ear because, in some regards, Angkor Wat was never really lost. The natives always knew it was there, and the complex is so expansive that it would have been like losing the Great Pyramid.
Updated: Sat Sep 21, 2019
0a59fd8baff9c9bf15ece167e864caaa Remember Favorite Movies by Visiting Where They Were Filmed for 09/15/2019 Sun, 15 Sep 2019 00:00:00 -0700
By Victor Block

Bob Burrus is channeling John Travolta. Right? I know this because I've actually been to his very own park in Branson, Missouri, dedicated to all things related to the big hairy guy. It's hard to argue with that much information.

As we embarked on our Exploratory Expedition at Bigfoot Fun Park we were forewarned that we would be seeing a large hairy beast during our very off-road tour of the rural Ozarks. The voice of an English-sounding narrator who's been searching for Bigfoot for decades was piped in warning us not to exit even if threatened, not to shoot firearms and — the most damning of all — not to go on social media.
Updated: Sat Sep 14, 2019
