The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden could be located in China, but it's not. It was created halfway around the world in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, by artisans from Suzhou, a city along the Yangtze River. They used traditional materials and design methods from centuries-old gardens there.
Updated: Sun Apr 05, 2020
b8598361160d04c3eae3b6add9ef4756 See Southern California -- When You Can for 04/04/2020 Sat, 04 Apr 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Kitty Morse

When it's possible to travel again, Los Angeles will once again offer its plethora of attractions. Many of the attendee names are lost to history, but at the time they were heroes of American culture: choreographer Merce Cunningham, composer John Cage, artist Andy Warhol and collector David Whitney, among others. In the iconography of LGBTQ culture this event is noteworthy as so many of all these important people who helped define 20th-century culture, including the architect himself, were gay.
Updated: Sun Mar 22, 2020
9bccc2a2855bf466e58ec3ad1d0725f6 A Long Day's Journey to Eugene O'Neill for 03/21/2020 Sat, 21 Mar 2020 00:00:00 -0700
By Steve Bergsman

My quest to visit with the ghost of American playwright Eugene O'Neill was almost a long day's journey into night, but in reality I was back at my hotel in Stamford, Connecticut, before the ebony curtain descended. You see, right there, I was trying to be poetic in the O'Neill kind of way. I always liked this line from his most famous play, "Long Day's Journey Into Night": "The fog was where I wanted to be."

O'Neill, the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and author of such other plays as "The Iceman Cometh," "Ah, Wilderness" and "Moon for the Misbegotten," was born in New York in 1888. While he was growing up his family took a summer residence in New London, Connecticut, called Monte Cristo Cottage. It is still there and open to the public — sometimes.
Updated: Sat Mar 21, 2020
dbcf2fcf51c5756c9db960a5fbc9d0b2 Enjoy Nature and Culture in Juneau, Alaska for 03/15/2020 Sun, 15 Mar 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Margot Black

Juneau is a travel gem that delivers all Alaska has to offer in spades: dramatic vistas, spectacular wildlife, pristine nature and cultural depth. In addition to being Alaska's vibrant capital city, Juneau is also a hopping port town. It's a popular port of call for cruise ships, and it's where most people will be departing if they're going to be sailing the Inside Passage. As both a mountain town and a coastal community, Juneau offered a multitude of ways for our family to make the most out of our vacation time in southeast Alaska.
Updated: Sun Mar 15, 2020
808a11894ed04364643773fc6a55b7e0 We Can't Get Enough of Anchorage for 03/14/2020 Sat, 14 Mar 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Margot Black

My family would go back to Anchorage, Alaska, in a heartbeat. The picturesque location of the city, framed by the Chugach Mountains and the saltwaters of Cook Inlet, mean that adventure is always within reach. As one of the northernmost cities on earth, Anchorage captured the rustic Alaskan vibe that I was looking for, and it satisfied with every sense. There was a time when we were kayaking on Eklutna Lake that I truly felt like I was a million miles away.
Updated: Sat Mar 14, 2020
df26b92b7070c75d0a7e865b6479c9a5 Isla Mujeres: One Island, Many Adventures for 03/08/2020 Sun, 08 Mar 2020 00:00:00 -0800
By Lesley Sauls

It has been almost 20 years since the siren's call from Isla Mujeres first beckoned me to this Island of Women off Cancun, Mexico. Initially my heart was drawn to the romance and heartbreak that defines the island, but on this visit I delved into new layers that have me already planning my next visit.

The island is named after the women who would visit the Mayan temple of Ixchel located on its southernmost tip, where powerful waves crash in from the Gulf of Mexico. This easternmost spot of Mexico where dawn's first light plays on the Quintana Roo coast is also the spot where women would pray and make offerings to the fertility goddess, Ixchel, for pregnancy or safe births. Spanish explorers found them doing just that when they first discovered the island and christened it Isla Mujeres.
Updated: Sun Mar 08, 2020
899fce5dd8b82b3e2825b8a7d74d2e2f Tuscany? However, not all the longhair recusants wanted to live in urban areas. Some preferred the organic ambience of the country, and between the two metros were the beautiful Berkshire Mountains and in particular the inviting hamlet of Stockbridge.

The town became famous because of the ever-popular blues-talk song "Alice's Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie that rambled on seemingly forever but really did end before the 20-minute mark. It was written at her residence in Lenox, Massachusetts, a beautiful chateau-influenced home called The Mount, which she designed and which showcased her architectural and garden theories. After all, her first best-selling book was "The Decoration of Houses," which was published in 1897.

The Mount, located in the Berkshire Mountains and open to the public, proved to be antithetical to all she wrote about and her actual life in general. The home strived for openness, airiness, balance and orderliness. "The House of Mirth," the book that put Wharton on the map as one of America's great writers, was anything but mirthful. Anna Quindlen, writing about the book, noted that the book ends "at least metaphorically, with the sound of a heart breaking. This sadness, unalloyed."
Updated: Sat Feb 22, 2020
67c5b0a8e07df9c7419ae2b280a43a9b Live the Luxury Spa Life in Anguilla for 02/16/2020 Sun, 16 Feb 2020 00:00:00 -0800
By Candyce H. Pura vida summarizes why Costa Rica's unspoiled nature and tranquil "Tico" culture make it a family-friendly destination that's incredible to explore.

International Expeditions provides all the ingredients to do deep dives into nature by mixing exhilarating outdoor activities with local cultural interactions, all hosted by experienced nature guides. Their approach to ecotravel aligns with my goal to keep our family in nature whenever possible and to explore our planet. But in fact, the man who probably had the greatest influence, who introduced thousands of visitors to the landscapes and native peoples, was an enterprising Englishman named Fred Harvey.

Harvey arrived in America in 1852 at the age of 17. But it was in 1876 that he laid the bedrock of what would become a tourism empire when he entered into a contract with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. This was at a time when train travel was an iffy experience, when you were as likely to die from a derailment or a bridge collapse as you were from eating the food.
Updated: Sun Feb 09, 2020
ca6d58cb827ecf9767943aac5ebcd180 Welcome to the Hotel Castaneda in Las Vegas, New Mexico for 02/08/2020 Sat, 08 Feb 2020 00:00:00 -0800
By Jim Farber

Allan Affeldt loves giving tours of the historic Fred Harvey Hotel Castaneda in Las Vegas, New Mexico, that he and his wife, artist Tina Mion, saved from the wrecking ball in 2014.
