And if there's a destination ripe for these times, it's Columbus, Indiana, aka the "Athens of the Prairie." The unassuming Midwestern town is a mecca of modernist architecture and public art, a "natural" outdoor museum — and just what is needed while we are social distancing.
Updated: Sun Jul 05, 2020
acc6fbadcc614c68907d84e5a2f505a5 From Alan Freed to President Garfield in Cleveland's Lakeview Cemetery for 07/04/2020 Sat, 04 Jul 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Steve Bergsman

The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland mostly because of a man who wasn't a singer or a musician. His name was Alan Freed, and he was a disc jockey who in the early 1950s had a late-night show on Cleveland radio station WJW playing rhythm and blues music. It was a show oriented to teenagers that used a lot of jive talk that included a relatively new phrase for most white teens: rock 'n' roll.
Updated: Sat Jul 04, 2020
55dcb7a81dcf57ea43f020f53a242fd5 Sailors, Scuba Divers and Hamilton Buffs: St. Croix Is for You for 06/28/2020 Sun, 28 Jun 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Brian E. Nearby, an even bigger shark swam within a few feet of another diver in my group. These sharks weren't there to nibble on us. Rather, they were tagging along to gobble up striped lionfish — an invasive species wreaking havoc in the region — that we were spearing.
Updated: Sun Jun 28, 2020
3be617e98236ec1b1de84b3157a3b164 Racist Past Gives Way to Music in Shelby, North Carolina for 06/27/2020 Sat, 27 Jun 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Steve Bergsman

My wife and I only ended up in Shelby, North Carolina, because we needed a bathroom break. The road is the main link between Southern California and the ski slopes of Lake Tahoe, affording glorious views of towering Mount Whitney, at 14,500 feet the tallest peak in the Sierra Nevada. It was time to see all of this for ourselves.
Updated: Sun Jun 21, 2020
e1864715c0e10304756533752d9a4bfc A Bucket List Itinerary of Places We'll Never Go for 06/20/2020 Sat, 20 Jun 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Victor Block

As a travel journalist who has visited and written about close to 80 countries, the current situation is especially frustrating. The museum, which opened in 2015, was formerly known as the Carolina Music Museum but has been renamed the Sigal Music Museum thanks to the gift of the 600-instrument Marlowe A. Sigal Collection. What an amazing and delightful surprise this jewel turned out to be! The critters and I shared tranquil beaches in Virginia's Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent False Cape State Park, where even in high season seagulls and sandpipers far outnumber sunbathers. The relative solitude rejuvenated me for the second part of my day — cruising the boardwalk (actually a wide paved path) followed by an indulgent seafood dinner.
Updated: Sat May 30, 2020
cdf0367949fe5ca51ef50b1307543228 Try Bird-Watching While You're Staying at Home for 05/24/2020 Sun, 24 May 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Victor Block

Joann and Bill Jessen excitedly train their binoculars on a stretch of salt marsh that is alive with the sights and sounds of hawks and falcons that are resting after pursuing songbirds for their dinner. With binoculars and cameras at the ready, we hoped for a bear or a moose but were willing to settle for some Dall sheep high up the mountain. Not a passenger aboard the bus maintained a semblance of composure. We scurried like children from one side to the other, eager to be the first to announce the next sighting.
Updated: Sun May 17, 2020
5eeb52e93ad3cbb060f326510b48c075 Virtual Trains Keep You Traveling at Home for 05/16/2020 Sat, 16 May 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Victor Block

You're enjoying an adventure for the senses as you journey through the soaring Alps in Switzerland.
