Stapen

We work-weary urbanites found a way to escape to the woods during the pandemic. Yellow birch trees towered over us and ferns feathered the ground along the Upper Jungle Trail at Mountain Lake Lodge in southwest Virginia. Even in the light rain, 3-year-old James happily ran along the grass path, saying "Wow!" and Charlotte, 21 months, joyfully stomped in the puddles. We caught sight of a buck prancing through a not-too-distant clearing. No cars and no people marred our commune with nature.
Updated: Sun Sep 27, 2020
55e2d80c4e75433716a2b6eb841eef32 Small Rangeley, Maine, Yields Big Fun for 09/26/2020 Sat, 26 Sep 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Victor Block

Digging our paddles into the shallow water, my son, Tom, and I steered our canoe around a sharp turn in the river. The temples and tombs date back to the heyday of early architecture, about 2755 B.C., and more monuments remain here than anywhere else in the world. Originally called Thebes, the city was once Egypt's capital.
Updated: Sat Sep 19, 2020
2f7d9a4041bf3952e419ed3905efc08c T.C. Steele's home in Brown County, Indiana, looks like a diorama. In the foreground wicker chairs flank the front door; dry, scattered leaves remind me that it's fall; and the pale hues of the woods just beyond look like a watercolor. Now I see why American impressionist painter Theodore Clement Steele, Indiana's most important landscape painter, fell for the scenery and lighting of the southern countryside where he settled and painted at his home until his death in 1926 at the age of 78.
Updated: Sun Sep 13, 2020
73695390566c838f8d456910384314d9 Whether to Cruise -- or Not for 09/12/2020 Sat, 12 Sep 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Candyce H. Stapen

We miss cruising. My husband and I board big and small ships with friends or relatives every year. Sailing gives us interesting ports plus time together and apart without the hosting duties of cooking and cleaning. When Azamara canceled our August 2020 Norway voyage because of COVID-19, we understood. Our spirits sank until we saw their 2021 deals. Then we booked another exciting voyage — two weeks exploring the Black Sea in April 2021.
Updated: Sat Sep 12, 2020
b22b6fb24b6cd99e6427679a48d935ac Tapatio -- the Heart of Guadalajara for 09/06/2020 Sun, 06 Sep 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Athena Lucero

"Tapatio hot sauce was created by a Tapatio," tour guide Gus Melor told me about the product that is a staple in just about every American kitchen, including mine. But on a recent three-day sailing trip in this extraordinary corner of North America, my buddy Dave Cushman and I were taking the long route as we tacked back and forth on our 33-foot vessel, the Breeze, with Capt. Mike Simon of Superior Charters.

By the time we reached Presque Isle Bay — our anchorage for the night — we'd logged more than 25 miles, zigzagging past Basswood, Hermit and Madeline islands. In the process, Cushman and I had netted bushels of valuable sailing experience that will allow us to charter our own sailboat later on.
Updated: Sat Aug 08, 2020
4282dc5e9114f1886b23ef17fb5c3cf9 Birds, Bees, Flowers and Frittatas at the Silver Star Inn for 08/02/2020 Sun, 02 Aug 2020 00:00:00 -0700

By Brian E.
