Lots of eggs, sugar, butter, flour, fresh-picked blueberries dusted with cinnamon — and I added a dash of nutmeg on top.

I felt so much better. A simple pleasure. Some might say sinful. But, reader, this is no time to go gluten-free. I decided to look for more in my Wisconsin grandmother's recipe box. Surely, her fresh strawberry pie would do me good. Is there cornstarch in the cupboard?

Straight from the Village bake sale in Madison, Wisconsin, on the Fourth of July, a Blueberry buckle is a heartland recipe for happiness. Alan, the Shorewood Hills resident who shared his Grandma Walker's handwritten family heirloom, brings it every year to the fire station events. Every July, my knees buckle. This July, when I got home to Washington, I realized this is no ordinary time. I had to save my soul, where I live.
Updated: Wed Aug 14, 2019
e091e061cac7a58bc55b606e3718763e Obama's Search for Something Deep in Biden for 08/07/2019 https://www.creators.com/read/jamie-stiehm/08/19/obamas-search-for-something-deep-in-biden Wed, 07 Aug 2019 00:00:00 -0700

WASHINGTON — Graceful 44th President Barack Obama turned 58 on Aug. 4. It just got kicked in the teeth when it was down. No American president had ever insulted great American cities until hatemonger Donald Trump came along.

You'd be surprised how many people have ties to Baltimore. CNN anchor Victor Blackwell captured a collective anguish in defending it. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., grew up as the mayor's daughter, a darling of Little Italy, where her family lived. Trump's unspeakable attack on Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., who represents Baltimore — and we all know what Trump said — is likely a missile of malice toward Pelosi, too.
Updated: Wed Jul 31, 2019
3045fd680ca81cadbaee2012fe772f14 Orbiting Around a Sweet Moon Summer of '69 for 07/24/2019 https://www.creators.com/read/jamie-stiehm/07/19/orbiting-around-a-sweet-moon-summer-of-69 Wed, 24 Jul 2019 00:00:00 -0700

The Summer of '69 was the end of the unforgettable '60s, even if you were very young. The haunting song "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones captures the vibe under the sun: danger, uncertainty, a shot away. This was in the wake of two assassinations and police riots at the Democratic convention, between April and August 1968. Then Richard Nixon was elected president while a losing war raged. 1968 broke hearts all over.

Then something uplifting happened. Reader, I saw them in my dreams. Aging men in helmets on their rumbling Harley motorcycles made me tear up, as they streamed through the streets.

"Rolling Thunder" was a code name for a major Vietnam War bombing campaign. I swear the out-of-town riders sounded like thunder, the soundtrack to the somber holiday. For me, they were witnesses to folly, a reminder war is not so pretty. But organizers say this was the last ride here.

I'm sorry the procession for the Vietnam War and other veterans won't be back after 30 years. It's an important ritual for 200,000 men — and counting. Drawn from all points, the bikers traditionally take the town by storm by the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam War Memorial, starting from the Pentagon, a giant staging and parking area. The rally brings some peace of mind.
Updated: Wed May 29, 2019
7064fe01be681a3c27974f9a65401086 Counting the Things Obama Didn't Do for 05/22/2019 https://www.creators.com/read/jamie-stiehm/05/19/counting-the-things-obama-didnt-do Wed, 22 May 2019 00:00:00 -0700

WASHINGTON — Let me count the ways, Barack.

You did so much right as president, sir, and made us proud.
Updated: Wed May 22, 2019
786501b65d2086f5dce1af0a63dcc540 Trump's Fondness for Strongmen Leaders Abroad for 05/15/2019 https://www.creators.com/read/jamie-stiehm/05/19/trumps-fondness-for-strongmen-leaders-abroad Wed, 15 May 2019 00:00:00 -0700

We the people are preoccupied and landlocked with the Mueller report on the Russia investigation, discussing what it reveals about the president's character, campaign and lowdown dealings.

But what if that's designed to distract us from noticing the wreckage of President Trump's foreign policy (a nice way to say it)? It's time to snap into a new clarity, to see that the president's actions and pals abroad are just as dreary as anything he does at home.
Updated: Wed May 15, 2019
6ec29621cb9f00177097bc3837330eb3 Mueller, the Silent Hero, Must Be Heard for 05/08/2019 https://www.creators.com/read/jamie-stiehm/05/19/mueller-the-silent-hero-must-be-heard Wed, 08 May 2019 00:00:00 -0700

WASHINGTON — "Rectitude" is not the word that comes to mind in these troubled times, as the capital churns.
