Skirting The Issue

Swing high. Swing low. The hemlines this spring and summer promise to hit all the points above the knee and below. Even if you're a fan of pants, there's a skirt this season that will change the way you dress for success. Here are a few ways to skirt the issue and put some swingy style back in your wardrobe:

--Go midlength. This is THE newest skirt silhouette of the season -- the skirt that falls below the knee to midcalf. It was a runway runaway with designers. But this is not a Miss Marple moment. Instead, the new longer skirts are soft and full, not long and straight, giving them a whole new sexy vibe.

--Go even longer. The midi skirt is not the only star of the style show this season. The ankle is another fashion erogenous zone. Longer skirts that swirl right around the ankle expose just the right amount of skin and shoe. The lengths of these skirts do change the proportion of what you wear with them. In fact, the newest way to wear these calf-grazing skirts is with flats or low heels. Oh, for the comfort of it!

--Go for high and low. Low in the back and shorter in the front -- these hemlines are all over the place, up and down to give you a whole new take on not only skirts but also dresses.

--Go for the short skirt. The mini may be taking a back seat to longer skirts, but if you're young and in shape, you can still find the short stuff to show off great legs. The varsity schoolgirl-inspired look is the star of the short take on this trend. Pair these fuller, shorter skirts with fitted tops to keep it all balanced.

--Go for pleats, please. The more pleats the better this year. Whether long or short, soft pleats are giving skirts more-modern appeal in fluid flared shapes. There's nothing uptight about these skirts. But remember, the more fit and flare on the bottom, the more streamlined on top.

--Go for the side slit. Angelina Jolie may have reignited the trend when she bared her legs at last year's Oscars, but now the trend is hitting its stride not only in evening wear, but also in shorter, casual designs. In hemlines that hover around the knees, this is a fresh way to update a suit for the office.

--Go for sheer. Add a playful touch to your wardrobe this spring and summer with a skirt that's got some sheer fun. Designers love to tweak the classics, and this time around, you'll find skirts that have see-through hemlines below the knee or mixed-and-matched with overlays in solid panels. It's a great way to put some glamour into your wardrobe.
