There's a sporty vibe happening in fashion this spring and summer. The team players are pieces that will perform in your wardrobe whether you choose them to wear to the gym or to the office. But these new sportswear-influenced pieces are not throwbacks to a different time; instead, they have much more of a futuristic flair.
Here's how to play the game with style this spring:
--Layer your fitness gear. Use the pieces you already have to take them out of the gym and give them a new look by dressing them up.
--The tracksuit. Though you may not want to invest in Gucci's track pants for $995, you can use workout pants to rework your wardrobe. Begin by thinking outside the yoga class -- and wear these comfy pants with dressier tops, even sequined tanks. Or rock it like Gwen Stefani and do the tuxedo thing a la the tracksuit.
--The shirt that doesn't sweat. Get inspired by the new tops whose silhouettes are influenced by the casual sweatshirts, though they're not in traditional fleece fabrics. A little sparkle and shine goes a long way.
--Zip it up. Look for boxy, zipped-up baseball-inspired jackets in shiny satins and leathers. Anorak jackets are another way to play the active game this spring. Check out the newest versions in bold, colorful stripes. And of course, the hoodie is always a sporty favorite. Try one in a pale pastel color for a fresh twist.
--The bra top -- you know, the one you usually wear to spin class -- is another athletic-inspired spring favorite. It's a great layering piece under jackets or over T-shirts.
--The mesh tank. Breathe easy this spring and get out into the open with mesh tanks and T-shirts -- perfect for layering over those bra tops.
--The scuba dress. Have a really great figure to show off? Then try one of these svelte dresses (Michael Kors has a great one) that will give you an instant "Olympic" style.
--Gym bags. Whether it's a duffel bag or a bowling bag, the athletic-inspired totes are the thing this spring. Alexander Wang even does a high-fashion sling backpack that resembles a biker's "camelback" water bag.
--High-tops are back! Converse is the new "haute couture" for athletes in action. But don't be afraid to wear your new "tracksuit" with strappy heels.
