This season's glamour girl is drawing inspiration from 1950s fashions that have a very modern touch. It's the sophistication of Grace Kelly in "High Society" transformed into new-millennium style.
Nowhere does this sophisticated lady show up more than in the fall collection of designer Nanette Lepore, who based her New York runway show on the savoir-faire of the jet set. In her show notes, the designer says she summons forth "the sophisticated glamour of cocktail hour transitioning to the exhilaration of dancing past midnight."
Here are some of the fashion must-haves of fall's best-dressed high society ladies:
-- High-waisted pleated peplum skirts paired with short jackets in subtle plaids and twills. It's all very tailored even if menswear-inspired.
-- The pencil skirt is another key item paired with chiffon beaded tops, lace camisoles and tweed jackets.
-- Topping off the mix are floaty ruffled chiffon blouses, taffeta tops with exaggerated bows, sequin camisoles tucked into both wide-leg and skinny trousers.
-- Drama is key in coats with asymmetrical collars that are hand-draped.
-- Trumpet dresses with flouncy skirts swish and swirl in printed chiffon, tweed and sequins.
-- Chunky knitwear makes a star appearance in halter dresses and cable-knit shrug sweaters.
-- Pearls, of course, are the glamour girl's best friend in updated studded necklaces.
-- An oversized brooch is another statement of cocktail glamour pinned on dress straps, lapel collars and belted waists.
-- Bows, bows and more bows decorate everything from d'Orsay pumps and top-handle handbags and clutches.
-- And to finish off the high society look, you'll fine elbow-length gloves are de rigueur.
