In 1986, Rep. Douglas Barnard declared that James Brown was America's "No. 1 ambassador." He was, after all, known as the Ambassador of Soul. But in 1988, his wife Adrienne tried to claim diplomatic immunity after being charged with several offenses. Even if the honor hadn't been entirely whimsical, the tactic still wouldn't have worked. Diplomatic immunity doesn't protect American diplomats on American soil.
