Pettiness and Mud

Comment

The only good news for the Republicans coming out of the seemingly endless presidential candidate "debates" is that some Republican leaders are now belatedly thinking about how they can avoid a repetition of this debacle in future elections.

What could they possibly have been thinking about, in the first place, when they agreed to a format based on short sound bites for dealing with major complex issues, and with media journalists — 90 percent of them Democrats — picking the topics?

The conduct of the candidates made things worse. In a world with a record-breaking national debt and Iran moving toward creating nuclear weapons, they bickered over earmarks and condoms. I am against earmarks, but earmarks don't rank among the first hundred most serious problems facing this country.

Mud-slinging has replaced rational discussions of differences on serious issues — not only during the debates themselves, where the moderators sic the candidates on each other, but even more so in the massive television character assassination ads in which Romney supporters seem to specialize.

Groups supporting Mitt Romney have turned character assassination almost into a science. You take something that most people, outside of politics, do not understand and twist it to sound terrible to those who are unaware of the facts.

Blanketing Florida with misleading ads attacking Newt Gingrich won that state for Romney, after Gingrich scored an upset victory in South Carolina. The ads made a big deal out of charges that the former Speaker broke tax laws — charges that the Internal Revenue Service exonerated him of, after a long investigation.

When Rick Santorum suddenly surged after his upset victories in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado, the Romney character assassination machine attacked him for having voted in the Senate for various things that conservatives don't like.

But, when it comes to voting in Congress, seldom do you get a pure bill that you can agree with in all its parts. If you never voted for bills containing anything you didn't like, you might get very little voting done.

But, if it is a bill to provide American soldiers with the equipment they need to fight a war, and somebody has put into it an earmark for a federal boondoggle in his district, are you going to vote against that bill and let American soldiers go into battle without all the equipment and supplies they need?

Taking advantage of the public's lack of knowledge is something that Barack Obama already does very effectively in his political propaganda.

But is that something the Republicans want to imitate?

It has worked during the primary season, when the media are perfectly happy to see Republicans destroying each other. But it will not work in the general election campaign, when even truthful criticisms of the president will have a hard time getting out through the media, which hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil when it comes to Obama.

The pettiness and mud-slinging during the Republican primary campaigns is especially irresponsible during a time when there are very serious problems, at home and abroad, that need to be addressed in a serious way.

Discussions of particular issues, one by one, often miss the larger point that goes beyond the issue at hand — namely, this administration's steady movement toward arbitrary government that circumvents the restrictions of the Constitution.

Nothing demonstrates this more starkly than the president's arbitrary power to waive the requirement that employers have to provide ObamaCare coverage for their workers. That can be the difference between paying, or not paying, millions of dollars. What does that mean for anybody's other rights?

What does freedom of speech mean if criticizing the administration can mean you get no exemption, while your competitor who keeps quiet, or who praises the administration, gets a waiver? The Constitution requires "equal protection of the laws" for a reason.

And what about nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran, the world's leading sponsor of international terrorism? Is that not worth discussing in something other than sound bites?

Mr. Sowell,
The republican party is broken and has been so for a long time. The extreme right wing control the party to the detriment of our country. President Obama may not be an ideal leader, but the GOP is offering a paltry selection of possible replacements. Taking advantage of the public's lack of knowledge has been a GOP hallmark, especially when it comes to science. The current batch of pro-ignorance GOP candidates, with the exception of Jon Huntsman, is, sadly, typical.
I notice that you decry the messages of the flood of uncontrolled corporate pro-Romney money that has been set loose in this election, but have uttered not a word on the stupidity of the GOP appointed majority on the supreme court in making this mess possible with the citizens united decision. This is the result of extreme right wing GOP politics working their way into our courts. Ordinary republicans need to take back control of their party from the nut cases.

You are right on Mr Sowell.
The candidates are NOT addressing the FUNDAMENTAL issues of this election. OBAMA wants to destroy to a GREAT extent the initiative that HAS BEEN REQUIRED for hundreds of years for people to progress. INSTEAD he wants to force
equality of OUTCOMES for everybody. As many BLACK leaders have said it was WELFARE that killed the black race in America. NO WORK, NO EFFORT. NO PROBLEM... here's your home, car, college tuition and health insurance. You are Now FREE at last.. of work, effort, and stress.
Its not the extreme right wing who is doing this... its liberals who don't or never needed to WORK, put EFFORT or underwent STRESS to get what they have.
The FOCUS for the GOP is to rid America of a disease called "NOworkNOeffortNOproblem" or Obama-itis.
Anyone who valves the relationship of WORK = OUTCOME needs to be elected PERIOD.
Thank you again for your FRESH and LIVELY words, Mr Sowell.

.. The reason for the "Santorum Surge" is that the people of the United States are hungry for someone that will stand for something - ANYTHING, for that matter ...

Mr Sowell has reminded us that we are the frog and Obama is slowly bringing our stewpot to a boil. We ALL need to step back and see that Obama has us bent over like we, also, are bowing to Mid-East Oil and China Money. If the President can get away with "I think this is unconstitutional" and literally direct the Justice Department how to rule - which has already done - we're already in trouble.

We are not "on the brink" of anything .. we are halfway down that "slippery slope" and traveling at break-neck speed.

@ Mark, complete agreement.
The fallacy that the media is protecting Obama is just that. If the media could protect, the internet cannot. Change the channel, surf the web. Read and find out for yourself without the spin from the left or the right. Unless of course, you go to church to have your holy book interpreted to you, you listen to the news to have your politics explained to you.
The truth, Mr. Sowell says it well: "...Groups supporting Mitt Romney have turned character assassination almost into a science. You take something that most people, outside of politics, do not understand and twist it to sound terrible to those who are unaware of the facts."
Exactly! What they've been doing and continue to do to President Obama and his administration. Do you think they assassinate only their own? President Obama has been smart from the beginning, using their own methods against them. These are Republican methods employed by a Democratic president, not the other way around.
President Obama's recent participation in the Super PAC debacle is entirely due to the Republican majority Supreme Court decision allowing nuclear $$ amts to finance political coffers. We can get rid of super pacs by overturning/challenging the Supreme Courts decision, but first things first. President Obama cannot face nuclear attack $$ without getting his own political arsenal $$.
Mr Sowell says "Mud-slinging has replaced rational discussions of differences on serious issues — not only during the debates themselves, where the moderators sic the candidates on each other, but even more so in the massive television character assassination ads in which Romney supporters seem to specialize". "Romney supporters" = GOP Republicans and their Super Pacs.
All recent polls show journalists and the media overwhelmingly vote Democratic, true.
Is it possible most journalists and media are Democrats because they are the ones that follow the News and politicians around, hearing and seeing what is said and done when the mike and the camera is off? Who better than they would know the truth behind the stories and the politicians? If the GOP were all that, don't you think individual s in the media would be voting Republican? You surely don't believe the media owners go in the voting room with them and make them vote Democratic.
Instead of the GOP owning up to their own party's corruption and participation in the many problems facing President Obama, they obtusely keep their eyes closed, their mouths open, and their heads buried as they lob grenades and now their nuclear$$ smear campaign . They vowed from day one, before his Presidency started to get him out of office and have spent the entire 3 years he's been President doing to him surreptisiously exactly what they are doing openly to their own.

It is so funny hearing partisan sheep like Mark and Demecra saying that the extreme right controls the Republican party. Who do you think controls the Democrat party? Obama, Axelrod, Pelosi, etc. are far-far left extremists who are also corrupt, incompetent, hyper partisan, uncompromising, and liars. It seems like these so-called tell the sheep like Demecra and Mark to portray the other side as extremist to coverup their own extremism.
