These are very tricky times for conservatives in America. For starters, they don't really have a candidate. OK, that's familiar. More unusual: They don't really have an opponent to hate.
Can that be?
Conservatives still hate Obamacare (even if whatever we have that isn't Obamacare seems worse than any possible replacement could be). They still rant and rave about the deficit and stimulus money and even about bailing out their friends and relations.
But the one thing that conservatives cannot rant and rave about is what has been their most predictable refrain since the Cold War: national security. Of all the things President Obama has done to conservatives in America, this may be the cruelest. He has taken away their national security argument.
Democrats are supposed to be "weak" on foreign policy, the kind of people who love to talk about the UN instead of unilateral action; of diplomacy, not airpower; of bringing the troops home, not sending more to serve abroad. It is because Democrats are supposed to be (and, some would say, often are) so many of those things that they end up wandering around tank factories wearing silly hats. It is because they don't want to be called any of those things that the party would jump to nominate a candidate with military experience, even if he had more experience opposing military positions than serving in them.
Barack Obama is definitely a different kind of Democrat. He is not afraid to be called a liberal. On the other hand, by many liberals' lights, he isn't one.
On national security, perhaps to everyone's surprise, he has done exactly what he said he would do. He said he would reduce American troop presence in Iraq. He said he would put priority on Afghanistan and even increase troops to get the upper hand.
He said he would support efforts to secure democracy around the world.
Some days, liberals definitely have a problem figuring him out. Is this our guy who is sending more troops to Afghanistan? Our guy who has authorized bombing raids in Libya? It is.
He is the same man who gets credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden, whom even Dick Cheney has to praise, and he is not the host of "Celebrity Apprentice."
How could such a thing happen to conservatives in America? How do they attack a guy who is doing exactly what they could only hope one of their own would do — if he were to manage what now seems the modern miracle of getting elected?
They look around. They look frustrated. Watch TV these days, and you'll see a lot of frustrated conservatives, eyes darting in search of someone to attack, forced to admit that they agree with Obama here and there and everywhere — but that it doesn't mean a single thing.
As any veteran of politics in the past 30 years can tell you, the sword is stronger than the shield. Attack politics work. Getting people to hate the other guy is almost always easier than getting them to like you. Getting them to give money to take a stand against something invariably yields more funds than an impassioned appeal to give money for a good cause.
So imagine the predicament for Republicans. Their best strategists are already telling them it's time to back away from the wedge issues that defined the party for decades. Opposing abortion doesn't get you to 51 percent — and may cost you that prize. Neither does opposing gay rights. Gays in the military is history. Even immigration has a politically dangerous downside. And now you're taking away "weak on terrorism."
What is an independent group loaded with dough to do? Ask people to trust that the Republicans will be better on Social Security? I don't think so.

As usual, Mr. Wrong is spewing his odious views about how "Hussein Obama" is perpetrating an "economic and political jihad on America deliberately (!) causing unconscionable debt and deficit" and that he "is quite literally an economic terrorist hell bent on destroying America". Is it politically correct to view this nonsense as racist claptrap? I don't think so!
BTW why does Mr Wrong get to spew his warped views twice? Can someone please remove one of these comments?

Lest any of you Obama drones out there endeavour to pick up upon my error in the post above the testimony given by Blair ws in February 2009 not last week. The member of the general staff made comment last wek. The point remains unweakened. Obama with that knowledge from 2009 implemented policies that were intended to exacerbate and deepen the threat. Obama and his premeditated policy of destruction of the American economy is the biggest threat to national security that we face and the right thinking (as in correct thinking) will sieze upon that. Obama is on a victory tour, banging his chest like an - - - wrongly taking credit for the endeavours of others, visiting Ground Zero for the first time in his presidency and although like all Dems is a hater of the military will visit our warriors, will attend wreath laying ceremonies and will try to project a love of country, whilst at the same time permitting the continuing persecution and prosecution of CIA operatives and true patriots who assisted and may have been instrumental in making his obnoxious victory dance possible. Only the fools will fail to see right through this charade and this new found but false display of preserving national secitity

I think that it is beyond OBSCENE that the pundits on Fox News,right-wing politicians, Rush and Hannity on the radio have vigorously pushed the idea that the killing of Bin Ladin had it's roots with George W. Bush. This attempt to hijack credit for Bush is like giving James Buchanan credit for ending the Civil war and saving the union. Ole Thad Stevens must be spinning in his grave in the cemetary on South Prince Street in Conservative Lancaster, Pa. ??? I note that Sarah Palin tried this and could not bring herself to the point of even mentioning president Obama by name....now the woman who was too stressed out to finish her term in office is giving advice to Obama to release the death photos of Bin Ladin. I watched the Republican debate last night on Fox and they all tried to snach credit away from Obama. They just can't stand that a black man made a brilliant decision to have this mission carried out in this fashion. The treasure trove of documents that was discovered and brought back has alread "derailed" at least one projected target and caused one terrorist to give himself up. And there are still people who will not give him a small bit of credit. Seniors vote and if the talk at the diners I frequent isany indication, this medicare voucher thing the Republicans tried to foist on us coupled with the Bin Ladin killing are getting the attention of the older voters. Obama will beat ANY candidate the Republicans put forward. Get used to it. Now that the unemployment rate is dropping day by day, the economic issues that directly affect American workers is easing. Gee maybe Obama will release the Bin Ladin photos in October of 2012 as a reminder to people of what happened this past week. Maybe he might have a photo of Quaddafy Duck and the Lockerbie bomber to go with Usama's photo. That would be priceless.

Re. RoberLipka.
What are smoking or drinking? Obama is a communist/socialist who spends our money on his trips every day of the week and bankrupting our country with a smile. You need to wake up and look around . The POTUS and FLOTUS are having a dream life on the backs of the working class. I cannot wait for 2012. He's going to be kicked out of the White House! That day will be the best day in the History of America.

Dear Clara,
I do not smoke or drink and alcoholic spirits. I drink lemonade and buttermilk and visit various local diners in the Western Pa and Northeastern Ohio area. One thing that I do is to listen very carefully to what people sitting around the counters are saying. Your obvious racial hatred for the president is evident But we Americans are long past that and are looking forward. It gets a little tiring to see such racial hatred spouted without any facts to back it up. Where were you when George W. Bush was enslaving us to the Chinese and Japahese as he ran up huge debt??? By the way, what Republican politician will you be voting for??? I watched the debate in South Carolina and none of those clowns will be the nominee. So enlighten me as to who can beat the president.

Huh?? This article makes no sense. Just because there is one thing that conservatives actually agree with the president on, you think there's absolutely no way they can dislike his actions as president as a whole? I'm a Libertarian, and there are plenty of reasons why I don't want to see him in the Oval Office for a second term:
- Spending. We all know that our country is going deeper and deeper into debt, and we need to face the music and significantly reform Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the Defense Budget AND discretionary spending.
- Immigration. We have millions of undocumented immigrants living in limbo. We need a realistic plan, whether it includes temporary work visas, a path to citizenship, deportation, or (more likely) some combination of those three.
- Federal over-reach. The federal government is way too big, way too involved. Take some huge steps back and let the states handle education, abortion, gun control, and more.
I don't expect to ever find a candidate I agree 100% with, but agreeing on just one issue is nowhere near enough!!

I do not care about the color of the presidents skin. I do care about his job performance, politics, his actions toward our country and abroad, and the way he treats our friend Israel etc.
By the way after watching the debate yesterday, I would vote for Herman Cain!!!!

I'm much more upset about the White House PR activities after the successful raid planned and executed by the military and the career intelligence services. Why did Obama have to announce it that night? Not only might they have gotten more of their story(ies) straight about what really happened (and looked less manipulative of the facts), but the intelligence community could have had more time to round up more of the roaches in bin Laden's inner circle. On top of that, why did they announce that they had gathered computer effects- again before the intelligence community had a chance to analyze and/or act on them? It looks completely ignorant and begs the criticism that the White House is more interested in politics than national security. Along these lines, having graduated from Georgetown, how did hundreds of college students converge on the White House for a "spontaneous" demonstration with brand new American flags and Obama signs an hour before the president's announcement -- at 10:00 at night on the Sunday before finals? No one went to Ground Zero until the President spoke. Just wondering!
Who are you to say what conservatives hate? The DEFICIT needs to be raved about. Yes, I rant about the shady practices of Freddie Mac and Fanny Mac and the encouragement of these practices by liberal members of Congress, including President Obama. The economic crash has HURT a lot of Americans, just as this huge deficit and continued outrageous spending and mismanagement of TAX dollars does. Of course, if you pay no taxes, you probably don't care. What happened to the war hating press?? Can you imagine what press would have said about President Bush bombing Libya?? What about Afghanistan? Press barely reports on this war. Certainly no protests reported. My 21 year old relative was killed there after having served in Iraq. Your hateful comments about Republicans are also hypocritical and misleading. You seem to be the hater of conservatives. I may not agree with your hyprocrisy, but I don't hate you or President Obama.

Lets not drink too much cool-aid and forget Obama's many, many BROKEN promises:
- End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000
- Introduce a comprehensive immigration bill in the first year
- Create a public option health plan for a new National Health Insurance Exchange.
- Centralize ethics and lobbying information for voters
- Allow five days of public comment before signing bills
- Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials
- Allow bankruptcy judges to modify terms of a home mortgage
- Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009
- No family making less than $250,000 will see "any form of tax increase."
- Expand the child and dependent care credit
- Create a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners
- Allow imported prescription drugs
- Forbid companies in bankruptcy from giving executives bonuses
Why do we distrust him?

Soothsayer in addition to what you have said Obama is distrusted and is to shunned because ( as I have said before and am being proven correct daily) he has shown himself to be an incompetent, race baiting, affirmative action and media created, psychotically narcissistic, infanticide enabling, Islam pandering, indolent, Marxist, blame America first, national security destroying golfing while the world is in crisis, sociopath bowboy liar. His Administration is simply Lies and Corruption Inc. It cannot as yet get the Bin Laden story straight despite about 18 attempts. America was releived of one enemy (Bin Laden) because of the continued implementation of Bush policies but we still have a greater enemy "within" who is determined to ruin America in true “Cloward and Piven” style by overloading entitlement spending and growing the national debt so that it will soon fatally exceed GDP. The State Department, under his watch, funds and panders to terrorist Muslim groups. The Justice Department under his watch continues to persecute and prosecute CIA patriots and is closed to the law and to the complaints of all save “Holder's” people. He will continue to deliberately further degrade our national security by persisting in starving the US of home grown energy and will use the global warming hoax to tax, tax and tax again. Unthinking cult disciples and moronic guilt ridden negrophiles, Gucci liberals (wearing him like a fashion accessory), nihilist progressives, clueless soccer moms mindlessly aping Oprah and Whoopi, liberal elites and hand out seeking moochers sucking on the taxpayer tit, emoted rather than reasoned ( or tried to show they were not racist) and voted for a$$ with an appropriately a$$hole shaped logo and banal slogans like hope and change. They got what they voted for but will now get what they asked for, to wit, unconscionable crippling debt, record food and gas prices, rampant corruption, radical socialism, record unemployment (today back at 9%), rampant inflation, the abject appeasement of those who would kill, them and their families and a blown economy. The oval office is no place for Obama.

Yes joseph, but WHO is the appropriate alternative candidate? Not ditzy Palin, Ditzier Trump, incredibly uninformed M. Bachmann, Mitt(obamacare) Romney, any fo the Philanderers wing of the party,,, Crazy Rick Santorum who was so far out there he lost as an incumbent by 20% when he came up for re-election,,,Chris Christie, who has aliniated every teacher in the country, or Tim Pawlenty, who got beat up in the Scarolin debate by a black guy who never held public offic????/ Things just look pretty bleak with this array of losers. The party has to find a fresh , honest face with some legitimate qualifications. People don't change horses midstream unless they get a guaranteed better horse. When Paul Ryan's proposal to end Meidcare and turn it into a voucher system woke seniors up to how radical these guys in the Republican congress really are, you had seniors reacting at town halls very angrily and now the Republicans are diving of that Titanic like rats caught in a giant klieg lamp...... I just don't see it as things stand now. And the photo of Bin Ladin will be released in October 2012 just before the election to remind people of what this administration accomplished.(The myth that pundits are pushing now trying to give Bush credit is like giving James Buchanan credit for ending the Civil War and preserving the Union......... I just can't see what you are seeing. and I don't think the majority of Americans see it either.

A very kind and unassuming gentle man named John Apflebaum , a rare stamp dealer from Philadelphia was killed over Lockerbie Scotland by a terrorist under the direction of M. Quadaffi. I would hope that both Quaddaffi and the terrorist who begged his way out of jail over a year ago on "COMPASSIONATE RELEASE" become the new targets in the sights of the NAVY SEALS. This is the next high profile terrorist as far as I am concerned.
How dangerous could a mild-mannered stamp dealer be to the world? The men who killed him deserve to be brought to ultimate justice. I hope that President Obama continues to use the Seals to get these high profile targets......that to me would be a good foreign policy. I was impressed by the events of Sunday night last. Very impressed.

Re: robert lipka The only matters that could be found in any way imrpressive "last Sunday" were the professionalism and courage of our uniformed warriors and our intelligence operatives and the results of longstanding already in place policies. Obama's performance on Saturday and Sunday was typically pathetic and typically cowardly. His performance in stealing the hponor of others since has been disgraceful. Having dodged the issue for 16 hours Bam Bam had to be pushed into agreeing to the mission by the CIA Director. Having been held on ice for 16 hrs a time, during which the likihood of Bin Laden being alerted grew by each passing hour, the seals were still able to accomplish their mission. The reasons for anyone not being able to see that Obama poses the greatest present threat to our national security are threefold (1) some Americans simply do not want to see (2) for some Americans the thought that a POTUS is an enemy within is so odious that whilst seeing it they are in denial and or (3) many are so gullible they will never see. (Incidentally do not try to look up the word gullible in an American dictionary it is not in any American dictionary)

Dude, any chance you can be persuaded to watch something other than Fox News? Or better yet, to read something? If you want to talk about liars, how about the BIG LIE that got us into Iraq? And how about "Mission Accomplished"? (Good one! We're still there.) Moving on to corruption? Halliburton? Throwing buckets of $ around Iraq? Countless contracts sans bidding? And incompetence? The economic mess began on Bush's watch, not Obama's. The guy's not perfect, but he certainly doesn't merit this level of animosity! He's saved the banking system (in a way that didn't thrill his liberal base) and pulled the auto industry from the jaws of death (turning a profit for the American taxpayer in the bargain). Get a grip!

In reply to cadbury's several banal posts here, I have a chocolate labrador retriever dog, I name Cadbury (after the chocolate manufacturer) whose simple mindless instinct is to retrieve things thrown to him, much as cadbury (the writer) retrieves all liberal talking points. Further, Cadbury (the dog) has another habit that when faced with situations that he finds puzzling or distasteful he whines. Cadbury (the writer) like all liberals does the same thing when faced with facts he finds odious or unanswerable. The constant liberal whine is “Bush lied” or, Halliburton, or the old standard when all else fails racism! Well cadbury facts may be odious they are not racist. The truth may be odious but it is not racist. Cadbury does not attempt to address the factual descriptions of Obama. Incompetent (he proves that daily) race baiting (look to the DOJ, his autobiographical attacks on whites, his descriptions of his grandmother, his 20 yr attendance at Black Theology teaching with Rev Wright, his father's teaching and the teachings of his newly claimed current pastor who compares all conservatives to the Democrat initiated and populated KKK), Infacticide enabling (two votes against the Illinois Born Alive infant Protection Act), indolent/golfing (65 days + on the golf course plus endless vacations, date nights, parties, basket ball brackets etc etc etc since inauguration) Marxist (his whole economic policy classic redistributionist Marxism), bowboy (he has shamelsssly kow- towed to all the leaders of enemy or hostile nations) liar (proven every time his lips move). As to the so called BIG LIE that got us to Iraq, perhaps cadbury has forgotten the words of Hilary Clinton, John Kerry, Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Sandy Berger, Madeline Albright, Ted Kennedy, all European intelligence services et al who all made pronouncements as to the existence of WMD's in Iraq long before President Bush did. As to Halliburton, perhaps (because the liberal media will not report it) cadbury (the writer not the dog) is unaware that the so called no bid contracts were long standing and already in place and set in place by Bill Clinton oh dear! Mission Accomplished, again another liberal myth and misrepresentation. The sign was there for no other reason than the mission of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was on complete May 1, 2003. The sign was put up by the navy not the Whitehouse. As to the economic mess, it did not start under President Bush, but commenced under Carter and was continued Clinton and was crystalised by Barney (the banking queen) Franks and his fellow travelers in Fannie May and Freddie Mac by redistributing wealth to those who could not afford the loans the Democrats were insisting be made. A few additional facts as to the debt that will kill the economy are as follows (1) when President Bush took office (2001) the national debt stood at $5.727 trillion dollars (2) when he left office (2009) it was $9.849 trillion dollars (3) under Bush's watch over 8 years the debt grew by just over $4 trillions (4) that increase was then the largest under any President (5 ) however the Democrats had control over house and Senate since 2007 (6) the spending and financial collapse took place under policies and legislation enacted by Democrats (7) the present debt under Obama is $14.4 trillion dollars (8) in just two years Obama has added a record $5+ trillion dollars to the debt (more than any President ever) (9) Obama's policies never see the deficit under $1 trillion dollars (10) gas prices are at record levels (11) food prices are record levels (12) house prices are dropping like a stone (13) unemployment is at 9% reported but more like 18% actual. The odious fact is that Obama is an economic terrorist seeking the destruction if the US economy and deserves the animus of all patriotic Americans

The mission Accomplished sign was indeed put up by the Navy personnell but it was paid for by the Bush campaign after many many complaints. It was determined to be a partisan sign that had nothing to do with the ship's mission. Just today, Monday, it was revealed that the Bush administration had negotiated an agreement with the Pakistanis that would have tied the hands of the US government with respect to military operations in Pakistan. Thus the MYTH that Bush policy lead to the killing of Bin Ladin was totally false
The attempt by various Republicans to steal credit from Obama and give it to President Bush has just been proved false and now the public knows it. I hope that will be the last of attempts by Republican politicians and pundits to hijack this incredible event and try to give credit WHERE IT IS NOT DUE

Mr. Wrong. Virtually all of your "facts" are conveniently - though not convincing - spun. YOU, dear sir, are the one who is constantly whining about Obama. He is not a marxist, socialist, America-hating terrorist bent on destroying the economy. Those of us on the left wish he would show more inclination toward progressive policies! Again, he has saved the economy--especially the banks (certainly not liberal faves these days) and the auto industry. It's true it's come at some cost, but virtually every economist on the right or left will confirm that when Obama took office we were experiencing the worst financial disaster since the depression. And like it or not, Obama is the one who made capturing Bin Laden a priority, helped fashion a brilliant strategy to do so, and gave the OK to make it happen -- NOT Bush. Again, give us a break and please watch/read something other than Fox News!

To robert keep drinking the lemonade and buttermilk and visiting diners and to cadbury keep drinking the Kool aid, living in mommy's basement, reading the daily Kook and Huff post and that way you can continue to hide from the realities, for example that GM was not a car maker when it hit the ropes but simply a provider of pensions and benefits to retired union thugs that had held it hostage for years, that GM is now on the ropes that only 1700 Chevvy Volts have been sold to 1700 clueless drones and the banks that got bail outs were simply Obam's crony capilist contributors. It is true that Obama inherited a depression but one brought about solely by policies that he along with the rest of the seditious Democratic party put in place. When you vote for Obama next time to demonstrate to yourself, inter alia, that you are not racist you shall be simultaneouly demonstrating that you are each America hating morons. He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool ! Bye for now fools.

"...retired union thugs...." ???? Joseph, you are so jealous of the retirement pay that many men have earned that it is sickening. These people have paid into a system with their sweat and effort and deserve what they are getting. Over the years, fat cat owners of businesses have used this phrase to denigrate the very people that made them rich. They skimmed off the profits up-front and now they seek to deny those delayed profits by insulting the very people who made them rich. By repeating that phrase, they drill it into the lesser minds of the world and hope to have it repeated by them. This gets them off the hook for passing insults. They go from using workers to using those who are jealous of those who were prudent enough to work and actually get a pension. YOU DON'T HAVE A PENSION SO NOW YOU RESNT THOSE WHO DO??? These fat cats are using you Joseph, how sad that you can't see it.
I note that Gov. Walker of Wisconsin, a shill for the billionaire Koch brothers, is now facing huge political opposition because he referred to teachers as "union thugs". They only need to recall three Republican senators to take back the Wisc. Senate from the Republicans. They brought this on themselves with their unfounded insults..Recall that the Governor in an unguarded moment stated that he considered formenting violence among the protesting teachers as a means of discrediting them and portraying them as thugs. This is how Republicans operate. The people of Wisconsin know who the thugs are .....Fox news tried to use footage of violence from another protest rally as proof of union thuggery in Wisconsin until Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert pointed out the palm trees in the background proving it was not happening in Wisconsin. I tired of this constant referring to union people as Thugs. A strike is a legal means of getting an employer to recognize the value of work performed and to compensate it fairly.

I was pleased that bin Laden was finally removed, but believe there are many questions not being asked. The first question that the media (all media) has failed to ask is when did our government first become aware of where bin Laden was located. The date is important to know, and every liberal, conservative, or independant should want to know as well. The timeline of interest should be the date that his location was known and the date and time the go ahead order was given. If there was a lag of more than the time required to get a team in, then the next question should be what was the cause of the delay? The other date thrown in should be the date that President Obama announced his decision to begin his campaign to run in 2012. If this were a Republican president, I'm sure the liberals would be all over this, but they are far too silent. Perhaps no one thinks that it would be a problem to delay going in on bin Laden for political timing with announcing ones intentions to run for President, but the question should be addressed. It's been all too quiet, and sadly the media is busy revealing as much as they can about what was found to ensure it is of little value. Thomas Sowell said it best that politicians main objective once elected is in getting re-elected, and he includes President Obama in that category. Liberals probably think he is racist against Obama, but since he's black himself I'm not sure why he would feel that way. Some credit has to go to Bush for starting the effort and the intelligence that resulted during his administration. Even Obama gave credit to the previous administration and so if liberals say otherwise they accuse Obama of being a liar. I was not fond of everything Bush did and certainly was repulsed by the "mission accomplished" stunt, and questioned going into Iraq and straining our military resources. Although the debt did increase, Bush's administration also had the costs of 911, the Afghanistan war, and the Iraq war (even though many disagree with the last item). I don't think his economic policies were conservative enough. Clinton left in a recession that occurred as a result of the dot com bust. Bush left when the failed policies of the Clinton and other adminstration policies failed that required and allowed lenders to lend to those who were not good risks for "social policies" that helped politicians get re-elected. The Economist had an article a few years ago that showed our national debt increasing exponentially starting with Carter. Servicing the interest on this debt is taking up more and more of the revenues by our government. Our politicians look for more ways to squeeze money out of the middle class to pay for our debts and keep all the luxury entitlement programs going. They are luxuries when you can no longer afford them. During the "surplus" of the Clinton years, one also has to ask why none of that surplus was used to lower the national debt. It's all about priorities, and until the priority is the American people and true values, nothing will ever improve in DC. Obama giving the OK for the Seals to kill bin Laden was the bare minimum we could expect. It did not mean he gets A's across the board or on foreign policy overall. It also doesn't wipe out the other actions he's taken that many disagree with. If you don't like his agenda you don't want to see him in office. I was proud our country elected its first black president, but that was the only thing I was happy about. This was a man with an agenda I did not agree with on many issues. As far as the bank bailout? Well, it was supposed to buy up toxic loans, and Bush began the action. The problem is that really never happened. Goldman -Sachs, a company Obama and McCain had stock in, was graciously spared and given the money they wanted. Others were not. Curious if those who were not spared failed to give enough campaign contributions. Also, remember that it was the Democrats and media who ramped up the negative fear mongering about the banking and housing issues that led to fear by the public to go buy as they normally did. Rahm Emanuel said it was too good of an opportunity to let pass and took full advantage to press for a destructive polictical agenda and to get Obama elected. Even friends of mine who voted for Obama saw the depth of the recession was driven by the Democrats and media hype. Such an old tactic to distract people by getting them to hate the rich while those who helped perpetrate the problem slide more of what they want under the radar.
