The Other Big News About Osama

Share Comment

The big news is not that Osama bin Laden is dead. I mean, that is certainly big news, but a guy in hiding who has a record price tag on his head is not exactly an effective leader of a revolutionary movement. The big news, at least by my lights, is that Americans waving flags seem to be the biggest demonstrations going on.

I'm not for one minute diminishing the success of the American military in tracking down Osama or the credit the president rightly deserves as commander in chief of such a mission. Nor have I forgotten that every family who lost a loved one because of this man deserves a chance at closure.

I'm usually the one who's pointing out that ours is a nation of laws; that we take revenge in courts, not in secret bunkers; that even in times of war, we convene tribunals before we employ firing squads. Not here. Osama is different. Hitler, too. Exceptions make the rule. You prove the next guy is as bad as they were, and I'll say kill him, too.

My first thought upon hearing the news of the killing was to run through my head who in my family was flying or was about to. Fear, in other words. Recognition of the danger that he would be seen as a martyr, that his execution at the hands of America might re-energize his base, even if it is dwindling.

So far so good, which is, of course, the worst thing you can say about terrorism. Vigilance. But — knock on wood, keep the evil eye away and all — so far so good in the Muslim world.

Yes, there is the familiar picture held high in a pro-Taliban demonstration. But the big talk is about the anti-government movements spreading through the Middle East and North Africa, most recently in Libya with American and French air support.

The bin Laden message of jihad against the United States rings a little hollow when the issues people are talking about are jobs and freedom, and American planes are bombing government positions — which is not to say we are safe.

I grew up being afraid of the Soviet Union. We had bomb shelters in the school basement, as if they would save us from nuclear fallout.

I can't say that I look back fondly on the Cold War, but it was a different kind of fear from the one I've felt over the past 10 years. How many bin Laden followers does it take to bomb a cafe or a bus stop or far worse? How many crazy people does it take to terrify a nation?

The reason acts of "terrorism" are deserving of the worst punishment is that they not only take lives, but they also tear at the very fabric of our society. Years ago, I studied fear of crime and, as did other researchers, came to the not so surprising conclusion that "fear of crime" took a greater toll on society than crime itself.

Terrorism lives on fear and breeds it. You cannot give in to it. But you would be hard-pressed not to worry about it, especially because no one is telling you that there is an air-raid alarm and when it goes off, everybody goes down to the basement where their parents will somehow magically find them when the nuclear attack is over.

Osama is dead. We tracked him and found him. We are helping the people in the Muslim world fight for democracy and basic rights. There are still scary and dangerous and evil people in the world, who don't value the lives of anyone. But today, at least, there is one fewer, and the world is certainly a better place for that.

One thing that bugs me about this is how the right-wing has jumped to make this a success for waterboarding and George W. It is almost OBSCENE the slant that they are trying to put on this event in an attempt to downplay the role of President Obama. These racist weasels can't wait to pounce on everything this guy does and twist the facts to their own agenda. (Special Note: I voted for John McCain in the last election) This was a tremendous success for this administration and the right-wingers are trying to hijack that success. The one claim that I think is very bogus is that the Bush administration developed the original lead using waterboarding. IF THAT WAS TRUE, THEN WHY DID THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION NOT ACT ON THIS EVIDENCE? The answer is that the Bush administration did not make the killing of Usam Bin Runnin' a priority. In fact Bush openly stated that he could care less about getting Usama. We will soon see the total dismantleing of many of these terror cells world-wide as their money supplies dry up. Bush made a lousy decision to take his eye off the Bin Ladin money machine. In any crime you follow the money.. This is especially true with terror cells. Follow the money. President Obama made a very wise move to go for both the body of Bin Ladin and the BODY OF EVIDENCE they would find around him that might ultimately lead us to more terror cells funded by Bin Ladin. This has got to be one of the most masterful and wise decisions in the hirstory of the U.S. Presidency. Only one person made that decision. Barack H. Obama. He deserves all the credit for the decision and the intelligence agencies and the military men deserve the credit for a mission well-done.

Why did we give UBL a Muslim funeral? If we had found Hitler's body does anybody believe that Harry Truman would have given him a formal Christian burial? No way. BHO is much , much too sympathetic to Islam. Why is so chicken?

Poor Robert does not fool anyone at all. His claims to be conservative are patently bogus as confirmed by his oft repeated mantra of voting for McCain. Many cast a vote for the McCain ticket as a vote against Obama, not for McCain a delayed Stockholm Syndrome sufferer, siding at every opportunity with the greatest enemy this Republic faces, to wit the same Obama. Simpleton Robert seems not to realise that Obama is shamelessly and wrongly getting/taking credit and stealing the honour for the work of others and the policies of others ( which Obama vehemently opposed) stretching back as far as President Reagan, who was left to pick up the mess left in the middle east by Carter, and by President G.W.Bush, who was left to clean up the mess left by Clinton, including the tragedy of 9/11 which was made possible by Clinton not taking Bin Laden out on one of the seven or eight documented times he had that opportunity. The idea that this administration put any new or special measures in place or conducted anything differently from the policies already set in place by President Bush simply does not pass the laugh test. I am generally no fan of President Bush seeing him as a progressive who paved the way for the insanity of Obama but he did protect America. Further, two things have become clear (1) Pakistani authorities must have known of the presence of Bin Laden and (2) Obama took a full 16 hrs to authorise the mission. Why? The delay was in the hope that Bin laden would be tipped off by Pakistan and escape. Obama had no wish to take down a brother in hatred of America. Obama when left with no option ( he could not avoid ordering the mission for fear of being seen to repeat Clinton's cowardice and have any chance of reelection) simply threw fellow jihadist Usama under the bus so that Obam could continue to destroy America. Obama (who commits ecomomic and political jihad on America daily) had no further need of an ineffective Usama. We still, post Usama, have unconscionable debt, unconscionable deficits, increasing gas prices, increasing unemployment and economic incompetence. The word unsustainable has been bandied about re deficits. Prior to November 2008 to the extent that we permitted the prior administrations to rack up debt it was not unsustainable but suicidal. However, Obama had no mandate to destroy the economy and because it is being done against our expressed will the properly descriptive word for Obam's policies is economic homocide or economic Jihad. Obama will continue to "spike the Usama ball" all the way to election day and sadly some fools like Robert will fall for it. All the credit for the taking down of Obam's brother in hate of America, Usama, goes to our brave warriors and intelligence gatherers and to the policies of President GW Bush. Obama is simply the undeserving beneficiary of the work he and the entire seditious and treacherous Democratic Party tried to prevent and or to destroy.

Common Sense: Anyone in the role of President would have made the same decision to take out UBL under the circumstances. Why is BHO considered to be so courageous?

Re: joseph wright
Stop repeating the myth that the Bush administration kept us safe. Have you and Liz Cheney forgotten that over 3,000 people died on 9/11 because the Bush administration fell asleep at the sheel? Then Bush took his eye off the true target Bin Ladin and invaded Iraq and 4,000 more US citizens died?? I guess these deaths don't matter to you Joseph...but they do to me. My candidate in the last election was Hillary Clinton but she lost,,,I then voted for McCain out of frustration at her loss. That was dumb, I admit. Especially after watching McCain closely for the last two years and seeing him make a fool of himself on issue after issue. Not to mention discovering how uneducated Sarah Palin was on foreign affairs and policy. Imagine her one heartbeat away for the Oval office,,,,,,,,Geeez....that is scary. I have NEVER claimed to be a Conservative....that movement seems to be very bigoted. My personna would never allow me to join that crowd. McCain is a person who I perceived to be right-wing but moderate and I respected his military service. Throwing out insults about Obama with no facts offered does not serve any purpose.

Re: Early
It is not "chicken" to treat a corpse of an enemy with respect. I believe it is the policy of our own military to do so, when and where possible. Aside from basic human decency, President Obama made a wise decision NOT ot inflame Muslim passion unnecessarily and create a violent backlash against our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He represents my Christian values AND he protects Americans at home and in uniform. That's what a good president does.
