Stop Those Checks

This is the Republicans' big contribution to our economic recovery: They want to make sure that undocumented immigrants who pay taxes using tax identification numbers don't get a cent of their tax money back in the refunds enacted by Congress. Oh, yes, and they want rich people to get tax refunds.

Anything else to contribute?

Republicans, rejecting all pretense of putting country before party, much less trying to participate in the solution instead of continuing to be the problem, voted to a person against the economic stimulus plan approved by the House. Last time I tuned in to their rants against illegal immigrants, they were stealing jobs from Americans and not paying taxes, thus robbing the U.S. Treasury — even though, for their tax dollars, they are excluded from receiving most benefits the rest of us can get.

Now the major moan seems to be that those darn immigrants are actually paying their taxes and, therefore, like every other taxpayer, are entitled to a refund for having paid more than their share. How dare they? Then, of course, there are the familiar rants that the top 5 percent (which I assume includes every one of the ranters) should receive a bigger share of the tax relief (they already got the biggest share under the Bush plan) because, after all, who else is going to stimulate the economy by buying designer shoes and ball gowns?

This should be a moment for Republicans to look in the mirror and realize they need to reinvent themselves. Having presided (yes, it was a Republican in the White House) over the biggest economic meltdown in our lifetimes, brought on by (I will be honest enough to admit) the bipartisan embrace of their hands-off/deregulation/market-madness theory of the free enterprise system, and then having responded (yes, they were still in charge) with a big government bailout that conflicted with all those once cherished tenets, you might think that at least a few of the Republicans in Congress would realize it's too late to "just say no," and that they need a new song and dance.

A tune you can hum. An approach to the problem that goes beyond demanding more for the wealthy and blaming immigrants for the rest.

Apparently not.

The country wants bipartisanship, but it's hard to be bipartisan with people whose heads are firmly planted in the sand. All you can do is walk around them and wait for them to dig themselves out. Sooner or later. Or maybe never.

Democrats, for sure, don't have all the answers. Mistakes will be made. Maybe the Republican theory is to do nothing so that anything that does go wrong won't be their fault. But hoping for the worst and playing the blame game is precisely the kind of politics that almost everyone — regardless of race, age, class or even political party — agrees is useless, hopeless and just plain insulting.

During the Reagan years, they used to call the Democrats the party of "doom and gloom," focused on what's wrong, or would go wrong, or had been done wrong. It is fair to say that it was not an effective strategy. The 1980s were a wasteland for the Democratic Party.

Better to try and fail than to sit on your hands. Or stick your head in the sand. Or scream about how the rich should get more and immigrants should pay more. If that's the best Republicans can do, they'll be stuck in place for quite some time.

what an idiot, republicans do not want a stimlius bill that is giving 7.7 billion for federal employees cars, 335 billion to STD research, 2.4 billion to carbon capture project, 50 million to the endowment of the arts, thousands to california city for a dog park. Thank you Repubicans, do you yourself know what is in this so called stimilus bill, or is it just that it is from Obama, so its ok, open your eyes, this stuff will not stimulate anything, but maybe the dogs in california. Oh and something else you need to do your research on, Bill Clinton is the one that caused this mess we are in, with the reinvestment act, forcing banks to give thousands of loans to people who could not afford them and when that wasn't good enough he forced them to give them more. then when all those people could not pay for them the housing bubble busted, People need to quit listening to people like you and do there own research, but they will soon find out, whan Obama puts us in even more trouble, Oh so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susan,

I'm about to stop reading your columns. I admit, I'm a conservative. But I read your columns because you normally offer an educated opposing argument. I like that... but lately your last few columns seem to have entered wackyville. At the very beginning of this one you complain that Republicans are concerned about undocumented (technically called "illegal") immigrants receiving a tax refund, while, so called "rich" folks will. (How do you define rich exactly... I bet it's someone how makes more than you... search your soul, you are playing a class warfare game that is based upon envy, you should be above that???) Anyway, I view your concern with an illegal receiving a tax refund as more important than a legal person receiving a refund, well, wacky. Come on... I'll keep reading for a while, but I'm beginning to classify your opinions as just far left garbage. Please consider more reasoned arguments that reflect the thoughts of a more-educated, less emotional person.

Re: trina

Trina you are right on. Considering you and I are the only ones who posted comments show me how popular she is. Its funny how Liberals are angry that Republicans aren't falling in line. Gee I remember that Dems did the same for the last 8 years. They voted along party lines all the time. I now see what whiners and cry babies they are. If they can't see the failure of this stimulus then their brains are Obamaized. Ms Estrich is a joke.

I just noticed another post concerning the community reinvestment act. That was started in 1978 by Carter, both Clinton and Bush to my understanding, strengthen it. CRA was a complete mistake, as it basically forced banks to make loans to folks who could not pay it back. Plenty of blame to go around, but the real problem was started by Carter. Somebody in Congress should have identified the problem and fixed it.

Right now the Republicans are doing the right thing. Vote 100% against this bill. The ONLY reason Obama wants Republicans support to to provide cover when it fails to improve the economy (which it will). Right now the government should be cutting services, etc, just like everyone else, and cut taxes. This bill is all about stimulating the size of government, not the US as a whole.

Ms. Estrich:

Regarding your column on the Holocaust. Why would any Muslim admit to the fact that there was a Holucaust, when they do not believe that a Jewish State should have the right to exist.

Ms. Estrich: illegal immigrants may have a tx ID number, but it FRACKING OBVIOUS that is is BOGUS, and probably stolen from a US citizen.

Jesus, what stupidity!!! JESUS! What nerve you have to believe that ILLEGALS have any rights comparable to law-abiding US citizens.

"Undocumented" immigrants is a nice way of saying illegal! Are you actually more concerned with the "rights" of illegal immigrants as opposed to legal tax paying Americans who happen to legally work and make money? Is that now "a bad thing" in America? Are you actually saying that? I thought we were all taught that in America, if you work hard, you can make something of yourself, AND yes, earn a lot of money. Is that now something to be ashamed of? Come on Susan, every once in a while I see you on TV, and you seem like a nice person, but what are you smoking these days? You're starting to sound like Obama with his concern about who in America makes a profit. His thinking along with what you just wrote is scary stuff. Please start offering up something more useful to read.

Susan, let's look at the word bipartisan. It means give and take from both sides. Your definition would have us believe that the Republicans, who had no say in this plan, should just blindly accept it, without questioning it's content (which was crafted exclusively by Pelosi and her cronies). Bipartisanship only works if BOTH sides come to the table and agree to work together. This plan is nothing more than the democrats saying, "we won, tough luck." They never reached out to work on a bipartisan plan. For you to say "something is better than nothing" is irresponsible. 80% of this plan, over $700,000,000,000, has NOTHING to do with stimulating the economy. Responsible, truly bipartisan Senators and Congress people will vote against this plan.

This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:
"Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
"A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
"Q. Where will the government get this money?
"A. From taxpayers.
"Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
"A. No, they are borrowing it from China . You children are expected to repay the Chinese.
"Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
"A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-de finition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
"Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
"A. Shut up."
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China .
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to Hugo Chavez, the Arabs and Al Queda
If you purchase a computer it will go to Taiwan .
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras , andGuatemala (unless you buy organic).
; If you buy a car it will go to Japan and Korea .
If you purchase prescription drugs it will go to India
; If you purchase heroin it will go to the Taliban in Afghanistan
If you give it to a charitable cause, it will go to Nigeria .
And none of it will help the American economy .
We need to keep that money here in America . You can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer (domestic ONLY), or tattoos, since those are the only businesses still in the US.

Susan, I too have enjoyed some of what you have said in the past. I was particularly heartened by your marvelous and compassionate tribute to Tony Snow at his passing, but with this rant, methinks you would be offended if we didn't give stimulus checks to Guantameno detainees. Get real, Sis!

Dear Susan, There is far more wrong with this package than the payments to illegal aliens.... Who would likely get back MORE than they paid in. This is nothing short of a Trojan Horse . And you know it. There is a small fraction of immediate stimulus. The rest is a truck load of typical democrat, big government, social engineering, earmarked, special interest garbage. You guys should just be honest and send a platinum credit card to every child under 18 in America with a $50,000 NEGATIVE balance. I'm sure they'll be excited. At least until the bills start showing up in their paychecks when they become adults.

Undocumented is the pc term for ILLEGAL. That means they don't belong here. They deserve nothing from this government. No tax rebates, no health insurance, no education or food stamps or anything. They need to be rounded up and deported. If the home country is not willing to pay the cost of having thieir citizens returned then that country would forefit ALL U.S. aid forever. That would help our economy without the Dem hated tax cuts.
Anchor babies should not be citizens either.

Illegal immigrants should not get a tax refund. What don't you understand about illegal immigrants except that you might not have a maid and cook. The democrats just want to buy future votes. What a pork bill and of course liberal support it because it takes someone else's money and distributes it. Spread the wealth. We will recovery because of free enterprise. Not socialist activism.

When you are an illegal and break the law you are not due anything except a ride back to the border. I seriously doubt any of the people actually paid Federal income tax anyway. Any refund amounts to more welfare. Same as it does with the 40% of legal citizens who do not pay Fed taxes either.

We could pay for the illegals' refund by collecting the back taxes owed by members of Congress and nominees of Obama. This will only work if they pay the penalty, as well, like the rest of us would do. Just a thought for this administration of care, concern, equality and integrity.

This sort of article demonstrates the total lack of understanding the press has about the economy. The author actually BELIEVES, truly believes, that de-regualtion was the cause of the problems. She probably believe we have a "free market". The ignorance is amazing. The housing bubble was CAUSED by government intervention with the CRA. The gov't had no business telling banks to ignore historical tried and true lending practices and screening processes. Lo and behold years later, look at where we are. How can ANYONE believe we have a free market when the Federal Reserve exists as an entity? Which of these says "free market"? Social Insecurity, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, federal reserve, etc. etc.etc. I love seeing the mantra about the tax cuts for the rich. never mind that federal coffers are at RECORD levels, that the rich AFTER The tax cuts paid the highest percentage of taxes in US history, oh no. Don't let facts and numbers get in the way of class warfare waged by the left. The problem is, Ms. Estrich, you NEED the rich, aka the wealth generators. Look at NY. Wall Street bonuses are way down, and NY now faces a huge tax shortage. California has been hemorrhaging millionaires because of punitive tax laws, and now has no tax base is facing massive shortages. Nice, huh? But hey, class warfare sounds good on paper. Tell me how to give a tax cut to a person who pays no taxes.

Why did the republicans lose the elections? Because they governed using liberal values. Make it clear, neocon=liberal. Big gov't, massive intrusion. Bush expanded the gov't and spent more than any president in history. That is NOT conservative rule, it's liberal. Republicans lost the elections because their base has seen the fact that they have not limited gov't size or intervention at all, quite the opposite with the Farm Bill, the Medicare drug plan, military expansion, etc.

Please stop perusing DailyKOS and thinking that the stuff professed there is true carte blanche. Now, I need to let my local paper know that it has no business including your editorials as there is a basic lack of fundamental principles. Now go chat it up with Maureen Dowd. You 2 would get along fabulously.
