Still Hoping

Comment

In the days before the re-inauguration of President Obama, there have been the usual curtain raisers, with the usual suspects screaming from their respective corners about the usual stuff.

And then there have been interviews with "real" people.

I was listening to NPR on Wednesday night; they stationed a reporter outside the White House to ask tourists what they would tell the president. Some of them had voted for him; many of them had not.

Not one of them screamed.

Not one of them insulted him, threatened to impeach him or accused him of anything approaching a high crime or misdemeanor.

To a person, they were gracious. They congratulated him on his re-election, even if they voted for his opponent. They complimented him on his beautiful family and wished them well.

And they expressed their hopes — imagine that, hopes — for the future.

The hopes ran the gamut: for jobs, for equality, for lower taxes, for fiscal responsibility, for education for their kids.

What they understood, and what the people who have been given loudspeakers seem to forget, is that Barack Obama is the president of the United States, not just the blue ones, and that once the contest is over, whether it's an intramural ball game or an intramural presidential election, we shake hands and go forward together.

Why is that so hard to understand? How is it that an entire professional (or maybe not so professional) class has emerged that makes its living pretending it isn't so, that our divisions are hopeless, that the other side is not just wrong but disloyal, and that the pot of gold awaits the one who makes the most noise and the ugliest claims.

When Hillary Clinton was ill, most Americans wished her well — whether they voted for her or not, whether they supported her work as secretary of state or not. But the ones who got the most attention were those who literally accused her of faking her illness — of faking a concussion and a blood clot, days in the hospital and months of monitoring — to escape congressional hearings that she has vowed to attend before she leaves office.

Did they really think she was faking? Did they really think the pictures of a clearly shaken Chelsea Clinton were staged for photographers? Of course not. It was just a game to get attention. And it worked — which is why you see so much of it.

I assume that within seconds of the president's taking the oath (OK, within seconds of the lead-up specials), the attacks will begin on everything from what he said to what his children were wearing. Many of them will make no pretense of being constructive. They will be loud, noisy and mean-spirited, and they will get plenty of attention.

You can blame the media for that. You can blame the cable network you don't like or the radio host you can't stand, as opposed to the equally loud-mouthed one you listen to.

Or you can look to the left, look to the right and look in the mirror to see the real culprit.

Why so many negative ads, people used to ask me when I did campaigns. I laughed. Simple. They work. Why so much screaming on television and on the radio? Personally, I hate it when a screamer comes into my house, in person or electronically. I vowed years ago that when people start yelling at me on television, I just stop. Let them yell. That is not, sadly for me anyway, the way to win fame and fortune in the media.

If civil discourse got good ratings, we'd have more civil discourse. If people demanded talking heads who knew what they were talking about — as opposed to those who look good doing it and scream loudest — we'd have more informed debate. If people actually voted with their remote controls for the values we teach our children — mutual respect, decency, honesty — that's what we'd see and hear.

From the interviews I listened to, regular people are still hoping for the best from a new Obama term. If that includes how we treat one another, whether we listen or scream, whether we reward good or bad behavior, this really could be a new beginning. Here's hoping.

Oh my God, Susan! Do you think that tape wasn't edited? I guarantee, it's not representative of the people.

Let me state, with utmost civility. The current administration is the most lawless in history, and our President is the most accomplished liar we've seen in the Oval Office.

Re: pb1222

Obama is not an accomplished liar, just a narcissistic congenital liar, a stranger to the truth, whose multitude of rank and obvious daily lies are ignored by his press and hacks like Estrich

It is cliche but one really does know that every time he parts those lips a lie will come out.

He is a disgrace to the office.

Does Susan not realize these are all issues that BHO is not promoting with his progrssive agenda!? How can she be so blind?

In wishing for a new beginning, Susan is implying that BHO's first term wasen't somehthing that needed to be continued, but changed. And I think all of us here who have posted so far can agree that we won't get change, rather another 4 years of broken promises, a poor economy, and crippling debt.

What the libs, including Susan, don't seem to contemplate is that it's not the current generation that will reap what is being wrought by this administration but the next generations including her children and grandchildren. It can't be any more selfish than that!

Such bs conspiracy theorists on Susan's site. First thought I have when I read the comments is what a bunch of losers. Sorry, but did you go through your lives with your eyes and ears closed, heads buried? Didn't any of you see this coming? Here's a thought, turn off the tv, turn down the noise in your head, put on some music, follow the golden rule and start living like you can't depend on anything but your own hard work and ingenuity and family, pets, friends and neighbors. It'll change your lives and thinking.
Our generation is reaping the debacle of what was sown by the politicians and the choices of recent generations who were less interested in shoring up the homeland and more interested in gutting the wealth and exploiting the innocent and less fortunate of all lands. Not to mention the generations past were much more trusting of their government, not realizing because it wasn't much reported, just how little they were worthy of their trust. A little of what was sewn by them & reaped by us come to mind this morning, going back not too far: "Join the military and see the world" (if you see anything beyond what you're aiming at or who/what is trying to kill you, consider yourself fortunate. You're still alive and your eyes aren't full of smoke and dirt). "Don't keep that old, outdated product, buy newer, better, best, top of the line!" Consume, consume, consume! "That item has been upgraded, is outdated, it won't wear out, it'll fall apart. Poor? Shop the Dollar Store! You're AMERICAN, paid better and live better than the entire third world and most of Europe..we're exploiting child/slave labor markets to bring you goods you could only dream about no matter what your status, all yours for a few$$ less than we pay the worker in a month or a year, (So don't buy American.) "That bridge collapsed and all those people died because the cars were too heavy and the engineers didn't plan on the city planners increasing traffic patterns without shoring up our failing infrastructure." (We spent your infrastructure tax money building yet another sports arena or shopping mall.)
"We have an obesity epidemic.."AMERICANS ARE FAT AND LAZY". Not created by the "modernization" of the food industry (exchanging real food for chemically altered foods, grown on nutrient poor soil or genetically altered to survive and thrive and grow without nutrients, the minerals and vitamins they should absorb from the soil they add 'em in the processing procedure, and feed grain to creatures genetically built to graze on grass and vegetation and we cage and inject every edible living creature with hormones and antibiotics to increase their size and decrease our costs to feed the neverending greed not of the consumer, but the corporate agrifarming industry for more and more profit at less and less cost. They've made a garbage dump of our water and land. The cost to us and to those poor souls now eating a western diet throughout the world? Poor health, low energy & depression as our bodies don't metabolize this altered foodstuff efficiently hence obesity & dis-ease, food addictions and allergies. We hesitate to eat the fish from our lakes and waterways, they've polluted them to where fishing to feed your family is increasingly dangerous and they now sell us polluted fish from dirty fish farms in Asia.
So that's just a few things this "selfish" generation has been left to deal with. In fact, when any ignoramus talks about today's people being "selfish", meah. This generation has sacrificed and paid for and continues to pay for the
decisions and choices of politicians past. Now some would have us shoot ourselves in the foot to appease those who believe pain is a necessary partner of change and prudence. We should "bite the bullet" "suck it up". I don't think so. It's someone else's turn. (you know who I'm talking about.) Just as an aside, The people who say those sort of things are usually only happy when they see others are suffering and unhappy. They really believe there's no gain without pain. (Joseph Wright comes to mind as a man who would be happier if everyone else was as unhappy or depressed as himself.)
But it's bullshit. This country doesn't need everyone to suffer to balance our budgets or pay our debts and Obama and a helluva lot of politicians and folks on both sides and in the real world know it. This country and much of our financial/debt concerns could be painlessly resolved, if the players stop pissing in the sandbox and start taking responsibility for cleaning it. They are and should be the only ones that feel anything close to pain because they are the ones who should be the change and creating the change. Playground rules: don't piss in the sandbox, don't hit, share your toys, get along with your playmates. My advice, adapt to the change, or feel pain. But don't call this generation selfish for saying, "Fuck you, you broke it, you fix it with your dollars and sense".

Susan Estrich tries to give the impression she is an intelligent, balanced and fair person. During the
recent campaign she let slip her mask. She jumped all over Romney's use of the term "binder" in describing
assembling names of capable women he would consider hiring for his administration in Massachusetts. As
Susan Estrich knows very well this was a CHEAP SHOT. Estrich is not at all what she pretends to be. She
is not fair, she is not wise, she is not honest, and she is not SERIOUS about getting at the truth of things. She may be intelligent, but like so many of the leftist fanatics that populate our campuses, she is what amounts to an intellectual whore, a prostitute, who uses her intelligence to lie, twist, dissemble, and mislead
in order to prop up her bogus leftist ideas and agenda.

Wright, you're so predictable, man.
You know what I know about you? A helluva lot more than you know about me. How do I know it? From your dumb comments. Maybe at one time you were smart and knew your shit, who knows, but at some point you closed up shop, your thinking is askew, mate, (and you call me a 'wanker').
You keep returning to the same negative patterns, same thinking, making the same choices, then wonder why your life doesn't get better and you don't have friends. You're in a rut, bro. change your thinking, change your life. Change is the only constant, Wright. If you don't evolve and embrace change it's your loss. Doesn't affect me or anyone but you.

Re: morgan
No, get it correct. I said that you were an effete wanker, and you prove me correct.
OH I know you better than you think, I have met many like you. A moderately educated ,envious, under achiever that imagines itself to possess a superior intellect, that imagines that it deserves more than it can provide for itself and rails against an unfair world devoid of opportunity for one as special as it. Always were and always will be. LOL !
The world is not fair. Never has been, never will be. There will be winners and losers. Loser
I, however, remain smart, I continue to know my stuff and for that reason I have withdrawn my consent to have "my toys" loaned out or handed to those that cannot or will not make or buy their own to play with or to share in return.
I have, without assistance, made my wealth and have educated my family and provided for its future and in doing so have created wealth for others and their families.
But in this you are correct, I have actually closed shop.
I have shut down my businesses as I said I would, I no longer have any employees. I no longer have earned income. I have by choice severely limited my contribution to this corrupt administration by eschewing earned income that can be taxed in penal fashion. I have even removed myself and my family and my wealth from bluestate PA.
I shall now, with glee, watch you and your ilk disappear down the Obama made shitter that you helped create. Its started already. LOL again. I on the other hand, will be just fine.
I am just saddened that you and your liberal progressive ilk have destroyed the future for many who are free of the sickness that is liberalism.

Morgan said "follow the golden rule and start living like you can't depend on anything but your own hard work and ingenuity and family, pets, friends and neighbors. It'll change your lives and thinking". Great advice, but this is a Libertarain line of thinking. Its the total opposite of what Obama stands for. Morgan, if you truely believe this, I'd think twice before supporting Obama. Anyhow, its great to hear Joe V Morgan again. And Joeseph, what did you mean by "Morgans generation"? How do you know anything about her age or generation? I don't recall her telling anyone. She could be a granny with an ipad, or a 20 something young professional or college student.

"Why is that so hard to understand? How is it that an entire professional (or maybe not so professional) class has emerged that makes its living pretending it isn't so, that our divisions are hopeless"

Why ? Because our divisions are HOPELESS. Time to divide this country and let Liberals/Dummer-crats have their part, Repug-licans have their part, and Free market capitalists / True Libertarians have their part. Then build a wall to keep the ignorant Liberals on their side.

When people have such different opinions on core issues, it is time to break a country apart or advocate tyranny of one over the other.

Nothing points to the need to divide this country more than the 2nd Amendment issue.

I do not want to be ruled by arrogant elitists Democrats . . . such people are as ignorant as they believe they are intelligent (i.e. Liberals are very ignorant and so are their ideas of how to achieve goals).

Consider This Experiment:

Scientist has a theory about fleas with 4 legs. Scientist trains a flea to jump when he says “JUMP”. Scientist determines a four legged flea can jump 4 feet. Scientist pulls off one of the flea's legs and says “JUMP”. The three legged Flea jumps 3 feet. Scientist pulls off another leg and says “JUMP”. A two legged Flea jumps 2 feet. Scientist pulls off the last two legs says “JUMP”. The Flea just lies there on the table.

Scientist concludes that when one pulls all the legs off a flea the flea becomes deaf.

“Smart” Liberals will laugh at the above joke and say: “How silly.” A typical Liberal will agree with the conclusion.

Interesting . . . . now consider the following:

Murder is illegal and punishable by death. Illegal ownership of a gun will result in jail time but not death. Yet Liberals believe gun laws resulting in a penalty that is less than death, will stop someone from murdering another using a gun. The "scientist" in the joke above would probably agree but I do not.

Further, Liberals say a “crazy” person is not responsible for her actions. If a “crazy” person runs down and murders a crowd of people with her electric car, such is neither the car's fault nor electricity's fault and neither should be banned. Restated, liberals apparently believe that cars and electricity do not cause “crazy” people. Such was clearly Bush's fault for restricting access to drugs.

However, a crazy kid steals guns and murders kids at a school with such stolen guns and Obama Liberals naturally conclude that gun ownership by law abiding people must be forbidden and guns must be banned. Thus, either:

(a)Liberals apparently believe that guns cause normal people to become “crazy people” or
(b) Liberals are ignorant hateful people and simply hate anything a "Conservative" likes; or
(c) Liberals are immoral people that are using the massacre of kids by a “crazy person" to advance their political agenda.

But what I find strangely hilarious is that when these same Liberals laugh at the above flea joke they are simply laughing at themselves.

Almost spewed my late afternoon "cold one" reading your post on my phone in Alta. I actually laughed out loud while waiting for my lovely wife. Thanks for that Susan's Mirror.

The sad thing is that you are entirely correct about liberals but what is even sadder for this Republic is that such goons get to vote other liberals goons into power.

Finally it is not "either" : subparagraphs (a), (b) and (c) all apply to all liberals equally.

Absent a divine intervention that brings the stuck on stupid, parasitic, kill the geese that lay the golden eggs, minded pieces of sh*t that put the piece of sh*t in Chief, in office along with the the wholly corrupt Democratic party to its senses, we will have to endure just another 1461 days of misery while barry hussein, the friend of all Islamists and the real enemy within, finishes his planned destruction of this Republic and his planned destruction of the future of its citizens.

Happy Obama second term. God help us all. Please !

Wrong again, Wright. "We" won't have to endure a moments worth of misery. But you feel free to be as miserable as you choose for as long as you choose. After all, with all your bluster and blubber and smack talk you never did leave America. Seems you've created your own misery and while we know misery loves company, you may find it among Estrich's groupies, but you won't find it among patriotic Americans who support our country and our POTUS.

Re: morgan
Listen dumbass never did say I was leaving America. There are things I have yet to see and yet to accomplish here.I said I had withdrawn consent to having my earned income support deadbeats like you and your ilk, to wit, the fools that elected the jackass now in office.
Patriots? No. Give me a break !
An unholy confederacy of the moochers, of the hand out seekers, the illegals, the terminally stupid, the radical America hating left, the permanently dependent class, the self loathing Jews, the government class, union thugs and the Islamists. Yes!
No smack talk. I have done as I have promised. I have played my part. I have acted just like barry boy has acted with the private sector in general, by shutting my businesses and adding substantially to the unemployment lines. No more employees. They and their families are no longer my problem. They are now your problem, assuming you pay taxes on earned income, which, either through direct or indirect taxation will soon rocket. After all per Pelosi unemployment and unemployment checks are a good thing for the economy. Bet you actually got sucked in by that one. Jeez! No more contributing more than my fair share. No more being hounded by leftist envy driven goons of this administration because of success and because of breeding success.
Oh I will have company. Lots of it. Look around you. The producers, the creators, the wealth generators, have been, are presently and will continue to abandon blue states (as I have done following the lead of others) to their self inflicted fate, leaving all you government dependent deadbeats high and dry. Its coming to you not just soon, but sooner than you think!
I shall, with glee, watch your pain and the pain of those like you, as the costs of living and healthcare ratchet up, as employers drop those who voted for barry and others off healthcare coverage, as working hours are reduced in order to reclassify employees as part time in order to avoid obamacare effects, as debt increases, as Medicare and Social Security goes bankrupt, as unemployment increases, as the recession continues and barry flounders, as energy prices rocket, as more and more dollars are printed and the few dollars that you have in your pocket become worth less and less. All brought to you by obama. Gotta love him!
As I have said, I shall be just fine. For me its just relative. I have, ever since the clown prince was first inaugurated been taking appropriate financial protective steps. But you my friend, existing in a deluded, false, even absurd form of fictional patriotism, as you do, will not. LOL !
My misery as I have said, is not for me ( I am perfectly happy and content in my "retirement") but rather for those whose futures you and your ilk have destroyed.

My bad, you said you were "leaving this country", not "leaving America'. Your comments are still alive and well in Susan's past columns and I have a photographic memory.
You're an angry, egotistical, smack talking fraud, Wright. Probably always have been. You were and are the problem, spewing your venom told more about you and nothing about the targets of your venom. Didn't matter to you how much you disturbed people with your disrespecting the POTUS and his family. After all, you have your first amendment rights which you use to trample on whatever and whoever you choose. You do know there's a lot of military families who call people who use the first amendment to diss the POTUS 'elitist little beitches', yeah?
I highly doubt you have anything of value for anyone who is unlike yourself. If you've left the work world, good, I'm sure you're not missed. I feel compassion for you living with your contrived misery because it seems to make you happy. But your rants are and always have been disgusting. You wanted everything to stay the same and it didn't and you're pissed at the world and in denial. Have you ever asked yourself why the need to piss and shit on everyone and everything that doesn't share your sorry, miserable outlook? If, as you think, America is going down the tubes, then better grasp at whatever happiness you can find. But I think the only thing going down the tubes is joseph wright.
