He talks for hours every day. He gets paid to talk. Just talk. Doing it well is no small thing; witness the number of people who have tried to be him, or be the NOT-him, and failed. But he doesn't have to build a coalition. He doesn't need the votes of the other side to earn his check. He doesn't have to write the legislation, convince Olympia Snowe, raise money to keep the lights on, put his name on the ballot. All the things he doesn't have to do give him the freedom to be as effective as he is at what he does.
Trying to beat him at his own game when your own game is played by a different set of rules is a losing proposition. He knows that.
The Republican Party's chairman and even some of my Democratic friends need to remember that.
When I first started doing talk radio, I listened to Rush Limbaugh in the morning to figure out how to do it. I don't mean, obviously, that I studied Rush to figure out my positions on issues; I've been doing issues my whole life. I studied him to figure out how to do radio — how to talk about issues in a way that engages people, creates a community of the audience, makes them want to hear more, connect, join the club. Rush is wrong on almost everything, by my lights, but the lessons I took from him weren't about substance, but about craft. By my lights, no one is better at it.
To dismiss Rush as mere "entertainment," as Michael Steele, the Republican Party's chairman, did this weekend, understates his abilities and influence. To a very large extent, all of us who do television news or politics are in the business of entertainment. President Barack Obama's speech craft is a form of entertainment. Fox News (for whom I work) has mastered a sort of lively and engaging approach to delivering news that, regardless of the content or what you think of the perspective, is quite simply more fun to watch than many of its competitors.
The best and most successful news-oriented Web sites are also, frankly, creative and engaging and, yes, entertaining.
But he is not the leader of the Republican Party. He may be the guru; he is certainly a powerful voice. But his job is not to write the opposing bill, to decide when to compromise and when not to, to participate in the process of making the sausage. He doesn't need to reach out to the middle, the way politicians do. Calling him "the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party," as Rahm Emanuel did, only gets him more attention and more power, and it makes it more difficult, not less, for the Republicans, whose votes the president ultimately needs, to defy his naysaying.
That is not to say Rush should go unchallenged or unanswered. The blogoshpere is full of smart, savvy, creative progressive voices, who can and should engage Rush. Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann should give him their best. It always has disappointed me, frankly, that there are so many Rush wannabes filling the radio waves and so few opposing voices.
One of the many decisions I regret in life was the one I made to turn down a very generous offer to fill the hours against Rush on what was then Los Angeles' major talk station; I said no because I was too loyal to the host I would be replacing. That host ultimately was replaced anyway and insisted on my weekend slot when he did. So much for misguided loyalty.
But the fact that Steele felt the need to apologize to Rush attests to the fact that it was a mistake to attack him in the first place. The attention Rush is getting right now from the White House chief of staff and the chairman of the Republican Party will increase Rush's ratings, but it is far from clear to me that it will make it any easier for Republicans to cross the line and vote with the president. Harder, I would think. Rush wins this game, which is why those who play on a different field should stay away from his.

Cear Miss Estrich,
As a long time Reagan conservative, I disagree with a great deal of your opinions. However I read each of your editorials as they appear in our paper. Your expressions are easily the most fair I have found. I enjoy your "other side" articles and greatly respect the way they are presented. I'm sorry other liberal and conservative writers don't follow your guide. Thank you again for your fair editorials.

PS. I'm an ardent Rush Limbough fan. Unfortunately, he doesn't run the Republican Party (many of who aren't the slightest bit conservative).

Dear Susan,
Good column, just channel Molly Ivans. I really miss her acerbic commentary. There is so much red meat or 'pork' out there for an individual with your talent. Irresponsible legislation and spending are owned by both parties. Skewer them all, Susan!

Susan: You may well be right that playing Rush's game will make it more difficult for Republicans to cross the aisle to support Democrats' iniatives. However, Limbaugh is an extremist and not well liked by the majority of Americans; Anything that Democrats can do that make it appear that he is the leader of the Republican Party is good for Democrats. Based on the Republicans' near-solid opposition(100% in the House) over the past month or so, the President's hope for bipartisanship is all but dead. But tying Republicans to Limbaugh remains as a tactical option and it's apparent that the Democrats leadership has taken it. We enjoy your column.

Rush Limbaugh is a master of only one thing, DISTORTION. Daily on his show he distorts the positions of many who put themselves in the forefront of public life. His techniques are right out of the Joseph Goerbels Nazi playbook. I am suprised that he has lasted so long except for the fact that he is on many stations were the opposition point of view is BANNED. Rush constantly rails against the fairness doctrine and even distorts the intent of that doctrine. The intent is to provide time for both sides of the issues of the day. Radio stations are essentially owned by rich people, read fat-cat republicans, and they block access to the airways of many liberal shows. Rush has his three hours a day, but any opposition is totally blocked in many areas of the country. Many excuses are offered but the truth is that to question this media pig is verboten. Al Franken stood up to him and as a result got himself elected to the Senate.....of course the Reublicans are blocking that win and the seating of Mr. Franken but that victory is proof that Rush has little influence beyond his base of mindless dittoheads. It is time more people stood up to him and pointed out his daily distortions.

Susan: The reason Rush is the most listened to voice on talk radio isn't simply due to "craft" - although he is good at it. There's none better. It's because of his ideas; his beliefs; his philosphy. It resonantes with a LOT of people. Sure, there are those who hate him. Just as there are many who hate Al Franken on the other side. Although I wouldn't put Franken in Limbaugh's intellectual league - just his emotional commitment to his opinions.
On your point that he doesn't have to actually write bills, etc. Well, neither did Obama before he became president. All HE did was talk. So, there is something to be said for those who simply "talk" about ideas. And Rush articulates what so many think and feel exceptionally well. I submit that I think he would dismantle Obama in a one-on-one. I've seen Obama go deer-in-the-headlights without his teleprompter. It all comes down to the degree of knowledge of the underpinnings of one's philosophy. Like his stance on issues or not, Limbaugh is well informed, enjoys clarity of thought, presents solid continuity in his positions.
Ok, Susan, good column. I am a conservative, and you presented a thoughtful opinion to read about. The reason Rush is successful is because he articulates the conservative position well. In other words, we stand for individual freedom to pursue our own happiness; we don't look for and don't want the government to provide it. I'm personally enjoying the fight between Obama and Rush. Rush IS winning as witnessed by the fact you are writing about it. I think it's a mistake for Obama to attack Rush or all of the other private citizens of this country who work for a living and don't live off the government dole. Rush is winning much the same as he did back in 1994. Obama has made one huge mistake these first couple of months -- he has made his agenda obvious -- the socialization of America. People are waking up to it, i see it, and even the "mainstream" press see it. It's hard to hide. In the end, I have *hope* that Americans will stop it.

Oh, yes I do want Obama's agenda to fail. And America to survive! (I'd like to have a beer with Obama, and he's probably a nice guy, but his agenda scares the living daylights out of me. Yes, I do want it to FAIL!)
Ask yourself one question. Why is the Whitehouse looking to demonize someone? Think about that. Our government is actively looking for people to demonize. I honestly don't remember the Bush staff talking like this. Is is possibly because Obama doesn't like decent? Just think about it.

A quote taken from a recent article on the front page of Yahoo. "Putin, the former president who is now prime minister, has likened the United States to Nazi Germany's Third Reich and blames Washington for the global financial crisis that has pounded the Russian economy." Hmmm.... and you wonder why conservatives are concerned about Obama! Duh. Even Putin sees it.

Ms. Estrich: I agree. But I think you missed one important point. It diminishes the president when he feels the need to spar with a talk radio host - or a , or two now, CNBC commentators. It makes him seem very thin skinned and small. Is dissent no longer patriotic? Are we now Cuba? He could use your advice in his administration, as he is surrounded with vile and nefarious characters.
If talk show can be said to be of substance that talk show is Rush Limbaugh. The liberal left is truly morally banckrupt and as Anne Coulter says,'Godless.' The scriptures talk about ingratitude as being morally wanting and that is just what liberal policy. Liberals want to take from the rich-the producers and job creators without so much as a thank you and give to the poor-the non-producers and entitlement minded who offer not so much as a thank you. From a biblical and common sense perspective this is truly immoral, as is all ingratitude. And this is the stuff and business of big government. And you say Rush is not substantive! He is right on to most thinking Americans as opposed to the unthinking and the 'feeling left' crowd.

Rush has apparently challenged Obama to a debate. I suspect Obama will politely dismiss him after spending all sorts of time and taxpayer money trying to vilify him. That would be smart for Obama to do, as, without a teleprompter he often appears lost.

Dear Ms. Estrich,
Perhaps a word in defense of Mr. Steele? I have listened to Mr. Limbaugh off and on for about twenty years - you're in your car and the only other station without static is doing the farm report. I don't know how many times he has made the point that he is an entertainer - usually when his callers want him to run for some office. I don't know much about Mr. Steele, but I am willing to give him a couple of gaffes while he learns the ropes. As many as Mr. Biden? I don't think I'd go quite that far.

It appears to me miss estrich that you are into complete denial. To simply say that Fox News has mastered an interesting style of delivering the news as to why they are number one is complete rubbish. Fox is number one because they are not swayed by anything or anyone, they report the news as it is, truthful. They are not biased and they don't succumb to the whistle dog politics which is prevalent in your style of reporting. And as far as olbermann and anyone else competing with Rush Limbaugh is a joke. Rush is not just an entertainer as you so describe. He is a patriot that loves this country and one that stands up against corruption and the far left. He also tells the truth, which seems to be foreign to you and your liberal friends. Oh, and your statement that you once had the opportunity to compete against Rush Limbaugh, sure you did.

Dear Susan,
Interesting you think you could have succeeded opposite Rush Limbaugh on the radio. Have you ever listened to your voice? Extremely irritating. I have seen you regularly on TV as a commentator, and your voice alone would drive any audience away. I know as a liberal you think you have superior oratorical abilities, but really, you aren't even close to being in Rush's league. I suggest you keep your day job, whatever that might be. You seem to have okay writing skills - why don't you just stick with that?
Ma'am; ...Mr. Limbaugh is only a pox on the great malignancy that is afflicting this society...He says it: He wants Mr. Obama to fail if success means the reform of capitalism... Okay; where in the world is capitalism working, and when might we expect it to work again??? If ever an economy demanded reform, I would say this one is it... Or we can wait until it gets so bad we cannot defend ourselves from invasion or revolution... I would prefer reform, but only because revolution are like wars, open ended and out of control... And I know, that just as our Declaration of Independence says: It some times becomes necessary to change forms... And we hate to... Forms are made to resist change because we hate change...I amcertain all of humanity associates change with the coming of death, or something worse... And yet, all of history is the story of mankind changing one form for another.... Mr. Limbaugh is hanging on to a past that never was... He is living in a fantasy world where as a knight he can tilt at windmills to his rotten heart's content... The only problem is, that no charger would hold him, and no mule is stupid enough to try... The man is gross in his being, and in his thoughts... There is not an ounce of finess in all that fat... He is God's own original blunt object... Okay; times up... If we should not reform capitalism; where is it working so we can once more make it work here by the example??? It has failed us everywhere, and it will take more than empty exhortations to makes us live with it... Thanks...Sweeney

Re: Ron;... Sir, they don't want to vilify him... They want people to listen to him... He wants to steer the republican party... Let him Have at it... He should remember that they have an edge on him... Compared to them, he is flying blind... They know what they have coming at them from a great distance off... He wants to look slick, but the facts are that he is walking through the dog's back yard with a blindfold on trying to find a pile with his allegator shoes... What do you want to bet he has to pay some one to clean them and put them on his feet??? You have to wonder what he thinks he can do better from a soft chair than they can with the resources of the government behind them... Thanks...Sweeney

Re: Ronald Prepchuk;... None the less sir, the society belongs to all of us and should support all of us.... We did not ship all our industry abroad... We did not drive down wages to the point where everyone was living on credit... All the property in this land once supported the government, and should again...It is for that reason, that property supported the government that they have such iron clad rights...What has property done with its rights but deny support to the government, act against our national interests, and load the weight of government onto labor??? The country is ours...Property is ours... If all the property this people took from king and natives was thought to better serve the interest of all the people in private hands then it should be in private hands...That is; it should serve the interests of the Commonwealth.... The easiest method of property to support all the people is to pay taxes, or go to some one who will make it pay taxes...Otherwise, let the state take it, and return it to the commonwealth... People could more easily make use of public lands than see them laying unused in private hands, held for speculation because the smallness of taxes does not support even their defense... So cry if you want.... If people were paid fairly they could pay taxes... As it is, most people work and support their society one way or another... Property should do so as well... There is not an absolute right of property... There is an absolute right to life and liberty... And by liberty; I do not only mean free enterprise... Free enterprise is clearly way too free... Thanks...Sweeney
