Real Democrats

"Are you really a Democrat?" someone wrote to me recently, after I wrote a column criticizing the president's decision to go on vacation in Martha's Vineyard while so many people — especially in the tourist-challenged Gulf — are suffering. What kind of Democrat would begrudge the president his choice of a place for much needed respite? Do I really think it makes such a difference whether — or where — he plays golf? Since when have I gotten so superficial as to elevate style over substance?

The president works wherever he goes. I know that. He needs a vacation, more than the next person. If it's his family members who are angling for the Vineyard, a place full of old friends, what's wrong with a guy who cares about his family's pleasures? In the long run, the fate of the Gulf doesn't depend on where the president plays golf.

But if you care about winning, perception matters. Politics isn't just about substance. Whether people think you care about people like them may count for more than whether you actually do. I've supported many fine candidates who cared deeply, even if the people they cared about didn't know that, and who had many excellent plans that never got put into action because they lost. Plenty of time to vacation then. Or ruminate. Or regret.

The most troubling defense of the president I've heard lately — from Democrats, I mean, ones who would tell you they understand our president better than I do — is that he really doesn't care if he ends up a one-term president. Doing the right thing is more important. He doesn't fixate on his popularity ratings because what matters are substance and accomplishment.

Is that really the way he thinks? Is that the mark of a true capital-D Democrat? I hope not.

Winning may not be the only thing, but in politics, it's the thing that makes everything else possible.

Being a one-term president is a badge of failure, not success, even if it comes by being true to your convictions.

Being a one-term president means that, for the next term, someone who rejects those convictions will be making the decisions that count. How can that be a good thing?

Of course, in an ideal world, you do what you believe is right, everyone applauds, and you live happily ever after in the White House for eight wonderful years. I wish that for President Obama. I really do.

But so far, it isn't working quite that way. He has the courage of his convictions; I have no doubt of that. My question is whether he has the courage to compromise on those convictions — whether it's about matters of perception, like where to go on vacation, or matters of substance, like budgets and taxes.

The president has been truer to his word than most politicians, enacting a comprehensive stimulus package, comprehensive health care reform, comprehensive financial reform. History should be good to him on that score. I am sure that is some comfort to him and to his advisers as they look at poll numbers that can only be described as pretty lousy. If only the economy were doing well, he'd be flying high. If my grandmother had wings, she would be, too — she'd be a bird.

Yes, I'm a Democrat. I'm a Democrat who can remember when we got killed on principle and when we won by compromise. Winning by compromise is definitely better. I'm a Democrat who remembers candidates who didn't give a darn about perception and those who studied it endlessly. Give me a choice, and I know which one I'll pick. If that makes me less of a Democrat, the opposite will certainly make the party less of a force.

Susan,
I have enormous respect for you. Your ideas and thoughts are heartfelt and incisive. I don't think we would agree on a lot things but I'll always respect your well-stated opinions. However, even though I have voted for democrats in the past, I don't think I will again. In large part due to the arrogance and narcissism of the obamas. The US press doesn't report the truth but the brits do: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1300852/Spanish-police-close-public-beach-Michelle-Obamas-250k-Spanish-holiday.html
That article just about says it all.

I presume all presidents have to vacation at expensive, exclusive places just to get some privacy and security. It's not like they can get do Disneyland with the kids or put up at the Howard Johnson's and play a few rounds at the public golf course nearby. The Obamas don't own a ranch in Texas where they can kick back and chop some wood and if they tried to buy one now, the howls would be even louder. If he doesn't win re-election it won't be because of perceptions he "doesn't care" about the suffering of average folks. It will be because he cared too much about perceptions that he is a "socialist" and a "tax and spend liberal." He should be caring that his agenda to help average Americans actually DOES help them in tangible, measurable and immediate ways. Right now, we out here in "average land" can't see that. Postponed, watered-down healthcare reform that may or may not help me afford insurance is hard to feel good about. A public option for all would have been easy to understand and feel good about. Trickle-down stimulus funding through the states for construction projects that take a long time to start up versus direct federal hiring through quick-start public works programs ala FDR. When people have jobs and unemployment numbers go down, they don't care if a "socialist" created those jobs and the business owners don't care if "socialist" paychecks fill their cash registers, either. Perceptions are important all right but they come from action and results that all can see.

Well said, Laurie. Again, it's not that Obama didn't accomplish his stated goals. It's how he has done so. Healthcare "reform' is enough of a mess for people anywhere on the political spectrum to have something serious to complain about. Bailing out the banks would've been received (and perceived) better if the president had required the banks to use some of the $ to rewrite mortgages. Having most of the stimulus money go to serious "shovel ready" projects (rather than simply to pay teacher and firefighter salaries (and misc boondoggles) would've been awesome. Telling us we're finally "leaving" Iraq -- except for those 50,000 advisers--looks like the same old same old, rather than change we can believe in. Not to mention the EXPENSIVE mess in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the administration is just politically dumb. Witness the BP PR mess, the silly interview on The View, and the "let them eat cake" vacation taken by Michele.

The biggest difference... one of the differences... one of the MANY signifigant differences between, say, ObaMao and Bush, is that when Bush went on vacation, he ALMOST always had Condoleza Rice, Dick Cheney, and a multitude of his cabinet with him so that he could work. ObaMao doesn't take his cronies with him on vacation, nor to the 41 rounds of golf (so far, in 18 months no less, more than Bush did in 8 YEARS). So in essence, the crux of your argument has been rendered useless by information, a normal tactic in proving how dumb Liberals are.

"The president has been truer to his word than most politicians..." Yep, he bold faced told the public that he was going to rule their lives (in a very articulate way, I might add) by telling people how they must live, eat, work, sleep, etc. etc. etc. and how the government is going to make them do so. That's now what people heard (at least, those that voted for him, because they couldn't understand what he was saying), they just heard one single word. Change. How's that change working out for you lot now? He is the modern day incarnation of Stalin, Louis XVI, and Marx all wrapped into one. As long as he and his criminal cronies have the power, he's couldn't care less about the average Joe...

I have rarely agreed with Susan, but I do respect her presentation ... and unlike many, she DOES have a sense of humor and knows how to play ... thank god.
As a conservative, my biggest complaint is the media, which has become quite useless to the public. My mother only watches PBS ... she never knows ANY of the issues or topics I know. Her news is like a morphine drip or a chinese water torture, and she learns nothing, understands nothing ... I can't discuss anything with her, she lives in her own universe. I do not watch the following anymore ... ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC (god-awful), CNN, PBS ... I haven't allowed News-Bleak or Slime magazine in my house for 20 years. Now, I follow commentators and analysts that have something intelligent to say or analyze ... what I like about Susan, is she is often quite knowledgeable about the parties, what they are doing, and what might or might not be smart.
In my opinion, most of America knows this president is truly a disaster on EVERY level you can imagine ... foreign, domestic, constitution, rule-of-law, attitude, process, respect for 'we the people' ... everything ... he knows nothing, but acts like he knows everything. Sorry if this offends but it is the simple truth. I've followed Geo-politics closely for 35 years ... I often know much more than political pundits and commentators and know when they are spewing garbage ... I've travelled the world ... this guy is a disaster, trust me on this ... the ONLY reason this guy is afloat is the undying support of a compliant Pravda-like media that has no ability to be objective AT ALL, nothing but pandering and suppression from the sycophants who are SUPPOSED to be skeptical and incisive. What a joke. If you're a liberal, I encourage you to LEARN, not just blindly buy into the latest leftist mantra. Anyway, good job Susan, I respect you even if I don't always agree with you ... maybe you can talk to Rachel Mad-Cow and help her out before her career implodes.

Ms, Estrogen,

I lreally respect your opinons, evne when I don't agree with you. I think Obama suffers from his inability to lead. I think h'es not somone most folks woud follow anyway. Still, I think he suffers from being a junior member of his party being elected to Prez. He's not the leader of his party and they treat him like an office boy. If he'd taken control of the healthcare reform, he could have gotten somewhere.

I am not a Democrat, but a conservative. Your article was interesting and on target critizing the Obama's and their presonal spending as well as government spending. You mentioned Martha's Vineyard as a very expensive place to vacation. When Michelle returns from Spain, they will be taking two more vacations, one on the Gulf Coast and the other at Martha's Vineyard. We used to call people like the Obama's "neveau rich," people who suddently came into money and spend, spend, spend showing their rich status. Only, they are spending tax payer money and we have a terrible unemployment problem throughout our country. We see Obama's financial advisors leaving and mostly likely, they don't want to be blamed for the crash we face with these big spenders.
Do they get it? Absolutely No and they never will. They don't mind being a on-term president and having one big fun house to do their lavish entertainment and travel like kings and queens.

History will (and should) be devastatingly critical of this president for the damage he and his fellow democrats have done. He is a fool.

Why aren't more news organizations referring to Obama as a Marxist? He clearly is, just read the Wikipedia article on it.
