New Year's Resolutions

Share Comment

For the first few decades of my life, I always knew what my New Year's resolution would be: Lose weight. Get to the number on my license.

After my son was born and I was really fat for the first time (which came as a shock when I finally figured it out since I'd been convinced that I'd been fat all my life), I finally figured out that if I treated losing weight like I did everything else in my life — with concentration, determination and a real plan — I could actually succeed. I even wrote a book about it: "Making the Case for Yourself," which came out within days of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

For weeks, I crisscrossed the country on a book tour that had me invited on every show everywhere I went — to talk about Monica Lewinsky. I managed to sell books nonetheless, with lines such as "If Monica Lewinsky had been on my diet, she wouldn't have felt like she belonged under the desk."

Which actually has some truth to it. Feeling awful about yourself — waking up every morning and castigating yourself as you stand on the scale — doesn't do wonders for your self-esteem. When the reporters would ask me how a feminist could write a diet book, I'd always tell them that feeling good enough about yourself to be comfortable in your own skin was as important as one of those "dress for success" suits. And it is.

But it's not the be-all and the end-all. That took me almost as long to learn.

One good thing about writing a diet book is that unless you're a mega-celebrity like Oprah, you feel pretty stupid about gaining all the weight back.

So for the next decade or so, I struggled to keep it off, or at least down. Creep up five, go down three; creep up five more, make the cabbage soup; creep up again, go back to steamed vegetables. I went from a size 6 to an 8 — packed up the tight jeans and told myself that an 8 wasn't so bad for a 50-something-year-old, which it definitely isn't.

And then my youngest went to college, and I felt like I'd gotten hit by a truck; I took on another job to pay the tuition, and the stomachaches that have accompanied me through life came back. There was no one to make dinner for or eat dinner with, and for the first time in my life, I lost weight without even trying. Or noticing, in particular.

I would go to try on a pair of pants and take in the 8 by habit. Then the salesperson would bring me the 6, and then the 4. Size 4? I weigh what I wished for in high school.

And no, I'm not writing this to make you jealous. Just the opposite. Here's the truth: It didn't matter. Not at all. Imagine that. My life is no different when I see the magical number on the scale. It's not a recipe for happiness and satisfaction. It really isn't a measure of anything.

So when you're making your New Year's resolutions, remember this. Be healthy. Listen to your doctor. Do what you need to do. But don't make the mistake I did. A number on the scale is not the road to happiness. It's just a number. Like 2012.

Happy New Year.

Dear Susan,
Maybe it is time for you to write a new book on diet. One thing that mothers do is make too much food for their children. Moms do that out of a misplaced love. As a result, their children grow up overweight or tending to be overweight and must struggle with that for much of their lives. My wife was a member of a weight-watchers club while she was giving birth to and raising our kids. The result was that she did not overfeed them. They are tall and slender now and have never battled weight problems. And they tend to eat just enough to get from one meal to the next. Eating correctly is a learned habit. When it is ingrained in your being, there is no need for making a New Year's resolution.
My New Year's resolution is simply to continue writing my next book and not get distracted by the intense politics that will dominate the airwaves this year. The hatemongers on BOTH sides are sharpening their knives as we speak.

“My New Year's resolution is simply to continue writing my next book and not get distracted by the intense politics that will dominate the airwaves this year…”Lipka's previous book and his next book was/will be respectively a collection of trivia containing such offerings as for example “In what city was the first Delmonico steak served a) Houston b) St. Louis c) New Orleans d) New York ?” It is precisely because the uneducated, uninterested, media controlled, “trivia” and “dancing with the stars” obsessed, “stuck on stupid”, economically suicidal, “hopey changey” masses paid no attention or were unwilling to pay attention in 2008 that we got the stumbling, stuttering, Islam pandering, America hating clusterf*uck of a miserable failure that now goes by the name of obama as president. Robert, here is some trivia for a next book. 1. Who lied on numerous occasions about his mother's health insurance matters as a candidate for president and as president? 2. Who lied about the circumstances of his alleged parent's meeting as a candidate and as president? 3. Who lied about his associations with known domestic terrorists, Chicago criminals and America hating pastors? 4. Who pandered to the enemies of America while at the same time alienating its allies? 5. Under whose watch has the national debt rocketed to over $15 trillion dollars, highest level as percentage of GDP since WWII? 6. Who has the worst job record of any modern president? 7 Under whose watch has the misery index reached a 28 year high? 8 Under whose policies if implemented are we destined to run trillion dollar deficits for decades? 9 Who is deliberately starving and will continue to starve the US of safe energy sources and is knowingly destroying jobs and posing an additional further security risk for his own political and America hating purposes? 10 Who along with Holder instigated “Fast and furious” and armed Mexican drug cartels and caused unknown numbers of deaths and the deaths of Americans all to attack Second Amendment rights. Answer to trivia posers 1-10…. Your boy barack obama.

Joseph,
Although I have an unusual name, it is by no means unique to me. Please do NOT assume that I am the author of the book you mentioned.

Since I voted for John McCain in the last election, the President is NOT my boy , although I have come to believe that he has done a better job than the man I voted for would have done. After observing Sen McCain in action, I am afraid that he would have entagled us in a variety of wars and international incidents that would have hopelessly tied our military into knots. All I can say about my vote the last time is "PHEW !!" I'm glad cooler heads and voters prevailed.

Re: robert lipka
It is telling that you were careful not to deny the authorship. Still what does that piece of trivia mattter? You may nevertheless make use of the facts that I posted earlier. While you may assert that your vote was for McCain (mine was for Palin) it is clear from your last and almost all preceding posts that obama has indeed become your boy as you consistently defend his absymal record on all matters of governance and in so doing, like the rest of the obama zombies or the parasites or the looters of freedom or other such Constitution hating ilk have become an enabler of his continuing destruction of America and its core values.
