Looking Evil in the Eye

The three Oklahoma teenagers were, according to official reports, "bored." So they decided to do something: kill the guy who jogged past them. They got in the car, followed him and did just that.

The district attorney described the youngest, the 15-year-old, as having treated the murder as a "joke." He reportedly danced as he was booked. The 16-year-old, supposedly the one who pulled the trigger, showed no emotion when he was charged with first-degree murder. Only the 17-year-old, who is supposedly cooperating, broke down — and only when the prosecutor referenced the "very, very lengthy prison sentence" he is facing. "I didn't pull the trigger," he said. So what?

OK, I'll play carefully. Assuming the facts presented without contradiction to the court to be true, these boys are evil and should rot in hell for what they did.

Now, to get even uglier. The (alleged) killers are African-American. The victim was a young Australian baseball player who attended college in Oklahoma and had just visited his girlfriend. He had a bright future.

The three beasts (again, assuming these facts to be true) are not star athletes and college students. Their lives, I'm sure we will be told, are empty and hopeless.

I don't know whether you call this a "hate" crime or not. That would turn on whether epithets were uttered, whether the victim was selected because of his race, all of that. It really doesn't matter. It doesn't get much uglier than the unprovoked, cold-blooded murder of an innocent victim chosen at random.

Anyone who was the least bit outraged by the killing of Trayvon Martin should be screaming bloody murder right now.

What makes me wonder whether they will?

President, some thoughts, please? Can you identify with the parents of the kid who went for a jog and ended up dead? No, he doesn't look anything like you would have at 15, at least judged from the color of his skin, but that isn't what matters, is it?

The real point is that these hooligans — the 15-, 16- and 17-year-old — also bear no relationship to our president when he was that age.

Evil comes in all shapes and sizes and colors, and when we see it, we need to call it for what it is.

News accounts say the two younger boys have had hard lives. The mother of the 15-year-old is in jail. Last year, the 16-year-old lost both his stepfather and his brother. Illness? Murder? Plainly, loss did not make them better people. Perhaps the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Is that cruel? Sure. But we are talking here of pure evil.

Plenty of kids grow up surrounded by all forms of depravation, and yet they would never kill a person to fill a boring day. They know, deep down, the difference between good and evil. Plenty of kids grow up with bad parents and bad families and bad problems, but they don't go shoot a baseball player out for a jog to make their day. It's not black or white. Evil doesn't have a color. Evil is evil.

Then there's the guns issue. An Australian politician and gun-control advocate is already calling for a boycott of tourism to America to protest the killings. It is important to know how these beasts got the gun or guns they used. (According to authorities, they were on their way to another home to commit another murder when they were apprehended.) No responsible gun owner could possibly agree that these beasts had any right to possess a weapon.

But at the end of the day, they did. And they should pay for it for the rest of their lives.

I'm glad to read that Susan understands the hypocracy of the Zim/Skittles incident. Blacks killing whites just does not get media attention. This is certainly the first time I'm hearing of this story. The gun thing here is a non-issue. Do you need a gun to kill someone? No. If these teens wanted to kill a dude, they could do so with a knife, rock, or their bare hands.

An all round excellent article. I agree with pretty much the your entire line of thought. This doesn't happen too often. But then, somethings are pretty clear regardless of your politics. It will be interesting to see how the news outlets cover this story.

Finally, a liberal admits that evil exists! Can we now start calling Islamic terrorists "Terrorists" including the evil Muslim being tried for a 'work place' crime?

Good article.

Ms. Estrich is dangerously close to sounding like she has common sense with this one. Maybe she will continue on the path towards the light; one can hope. She better watch it though... others in her group may take offence.

Our Choom-Gang president at that age was more like the 3 kids than the 22 year-old athlete. Except for strong family values (instilled by his mother's side of his family) he could very well have ended up like them.

When I see socialism, I see evil.
When I see crony capitalism, I see evil.
When I see government officials lying to Congress, I see evil.
When I see a president and his aides using the instruments of government to obstruct a political opponent to win and election, I see evil.

This article has NOTHING to do with Islam. For you to try and tie it to a religion not even mentioned in the article shows everyone what level of hatred you hold for that religion. That you would take a horrific crime and use it as a reason to denounce something absolutely unrelated takes some serious gull.
As for the specific event you speak of, you need to stop using it for your political arguments. It was one man who had a history of mental issues that where ignored by his command. He, along with every officer who pencil whipped his evaluations through without doing something just so their unit wouldn't look bad, should be faced with criminal charges and prison time.
Before you go spouting off about my not knowing what I'm talking about, bare in mind that I am an Army Vet, spent three years in Iraq and was there the day of the "work place" crime.
If you truly feel the need to preach against the Islamic religion, then more power to you. However, you might want to keep your arguments against it better related to it. Other wise you look spiteful, not protective. It makes you look like the kind of person who might decide to kill an Islamic looking person one day, just because you are bored.

This is the same Susan who gave us Michael Dukakis. Did you write a column about the young white well to do teenager from Connecticut who murder those young kids from Newtown. I did not recall you using the word beast to describe his inhumane acts of cowardness. And for you to single out the color of their skin and labeling them as subhuman is really poor judgment on your part. You can make a name for yourself without name calling. Perhaps your time in the limelight has gone by so fast you don't even realize how fast it has gone.

I find myself in the unusual position of defending Ms. Estrich. First, she did indeed write quite a bit about the CT shootings. Yes, she didn't call the killer a monster, primarily because she clearly considered him to be mentally ill (i.e., Not in his right mind). For whatever twisted reason that murderer did what he did, he certainly didn't do it because he was 'bored'. He certainly didn't do a little dance after he killed his mother and all those others. Unlike the shooter in this case, the CT killer apparently felt some remorse since he killed himself in the end.

I believe her complaint here is against all those individuals who, in a recent well publicized FL killing, so publicly took up the victims cause primarily because of his race. I suspect she is calling these individuals out now for being so strangely quiet about this incident. Where is the Reverend S on this issue. Why is he so quiet about it?

I'm afraid Ms. Estrich has this issue nailed. If the facts are as advertized, these kids are monsters. Perhaps you feel the need to cut them slack because of their origins. Perhaps you can rationalize that your statements aren't a weird kind of ex post facto enabling of this crime. You have to live with yourself. The rest of us know evil when we see it. Some even take the correct, but non-PC action, of calling it what it is.

This murder is a natural and predictable result of the race baiting hatred generated by the media, Liberals, Democrats, and the President via thief despicable behavior regarding Travon Martin and similar race bating endeavors; just to keep their voting block on the Democrat plantation.

This blood is on the hands of such despicable people along with the actual murders.

If Obama had a son . . .

The article is about "evil."
Is not Radical Islam evil?
Incidently, two of my best friends are Muslim. I know the difference between good Muslims and evil Muslims!

After reading your article, I feel you have the right to your opinion, but I have a problem with you when your facts are
wrong. In your editorial "Looking Evil In the Eye", you stated that the young men who killed the Australian baseball player were African-American. The truth is that one was African-American, one was White and the third was Mixed Race. I feel when you send your editorial viewpoint to the newspaper, such as the one I read, The Star Democrat, make sure your facts are correct. As I stated you have a right to your opinion, but you don't the right to your own facts. Thank you.
