'Socialism' Is Not the Problem

Something about Barack Obama has a way of driving some conservatives completely batty. John McCain detected something "a lot like socialism" in his tax plan. Veteran conservative media critic L. Brent Bozell has no doubt the new president will "deliver socialism." But the prize goes to Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., who says "we've elected a Marxist" who may create an American Gestapo.

In the radioactive atmosphere of modern partisan politics, no one puts much value on verbal precision. So it's safe to say that over the next four years, the 44th president will come to think his name is Socialist Obama, as critics on the right abandon analysis in favor of invective.

That is a mistake — as McCain's losing campaign confirms. Accusing Obama of socialism is unwise for three reasons: 1) It's not true, and 2) it makes the accuser sound like an idiot, and 3) it distracts from Obama's true inclinations, which are worrisome enough.

These days, no one believes in socialism — defined by the late, left-wing economist Robert Heilbroner as "a centrally planned economy in which the government controls all means of production." A socialist wouldn't favor government aid to the automakers or the banks. He'd propose that the government take them over and run them for the benefit of society. But you haven't heard Obama or anyone else suggest that.

The president-elect is not unaware of the superiority of capitalism. His book "The Audacity of Hope" contains a testimonial that could have been plagiarized from Ayn Rand: "Our Constitution places the ownership of private property at the very heart of our system of liberty. … The result of this business culture has been a prosperity that's unmatched in human history. … Our greatest asset has been our system of social organization, a system that for generations has encouraged constant innovation, individual initiative and the efficient allocation of resources."

Of course Obama believes the government should do more to help the poor and vulnerable. If redistributing wealth makes you a socialist, though, you have to apply that label to the legendary libertarian economist Milton Friedman, who proposed a "negative income tax" to assure everyone basic sustenance.

But just because Obama is not nearly as bad as his detractors claim doesn't mean we have no worries.

His biggest shortcoming is a common one in his party: the assumption that every problem can be solved by government intervention, and that if a little intervention is good, more is better.

His plan on climate change shows the problem. He has a sensible idea — putting caps on greenhouse gas emissions and letting companies buy and sell the right to pollute. That would discourage harmful activity while leaving market forces to find the most efficient means to that end.

Alas, Obama isn't content to leave it there. He unpacks an array of bright ideas to reduce carbon emissions — demanding higher fuel economy from automakers, showering money on clean coal technology, giving consumers tax credits for plug-in hybrids, and on and on.

This belt-and-suspenders approach reflects a familiar liberal vice: the insatiable urge to meddle. It's like the team owner offering the coach a generous new contract if he wins the championship — and then dictating the starting lineup and the play selection for the entire season. It presumes that the government knows in advance the right mix of changes to achieve cleaner energy use at the lowest cost, which neither it nor Stephen Hawking nor anyone else does.

Obama also seems to regard the nation's productive sector as a laboratory for well-intentioned policymakers. In his "60 Minutes" interview, he praised Franklin Roosevelt for his "willingness to try things. And experiment in order to get people working again." What he overlooks is that experimentation creates uncertainty, and uncertainty discourages businesses from doing what they are supposed to do.

During the 1930s, as economist Robert Higgs showed in a 1997 essay, the effect of all the experimentation was the opposite of what Obama assumes. The endless fear of what FDR might do caused net business investment to fall, year after year, prolonging the very catastrophe he was trying to end.

Obama exhibits blithe confidence in the government's power to take economic problems and make them better. He will fare better if he keeps in mind its unbounded capacity to make things worse. For that you don't need socialism.

Mr. Chapman seems to know Mr. Obama better than the rest of us. I don't understand how that's possible when Obama has done such a brilliant job of hiding his past. A clue to Mr. Obama's past is the assortment of scoundrels he has associated with, from the corrupt Mayor Daley political machine to the vicious Raille Odinga in Kenya. Then factor in the cult-like following he's developed and the 650 million dollars he accepted for his campaign, you wind up with a very dangerous combination of arrogance and political debt that justifies fear for this nation's future at a time when our capitalist system is most vulnerable. I hope Mr. Chapman is right. I fear he may be wrong.

There is a vanishingly small difference between the definition of socialism Mr. Chapman provides, and his description of Obama's likely governance. There's no logic in objecting to the word "socialism" when the word accurately conveys your subject's philosophy. Obama's past and current associations, and his legislative conduct to date, provide sufficient basis for deep-seated fears about what will probably be forthcoming. Chapman's perspective is unjustifiably optimistic. Conservatives can also do without sermons about what they should do next from someone whose vision is as poor as Chapman's. There hasn't been a conservative in the White House since Reagan, or a conservative congress since 1998. Conservatism didn't lose the election simply because conservatism has been absent from our federal government for a decade. Milquetoast Rockefeller Republicanism got a well-deserved drubbing. Nobody should ever confuse that rubbish with genuine conservatism.

What is it about people like Steve Chapman, that makes them want to turn away from what some people ACTUALY SAY? Does Steve not believe ANYONE when they say something about themselves? Or is it selective? READ Obamas' books. LISTEN to them on tape. When he was going to college, he "sought out the MARXIST PROFESSORS." What part of that does Steve have a problem with? Is William Ayers a Marxist? I think he is. What about the Racist Rev.? Is he a Marxist? I think he is. Pfleger, Acorn, are they MARXISTS? "White Mans' greed, fuels a world in need." Sound familiar? 'To each, according to their needs, From each, according to their abilities." What about that one? JUST WORDS? Message to Steve Chapman: I don't know who YOU are used to dealing with, but ME, I tend to take people at THEIR WORD. Is the Great Community Organizer a MARXIST? He SAYS he is, in words and deeds. But we'll cut him some slack. Eh, Steve? We'll wait til he "spreads the wealth around", and then we'll let you know. What a MORON.

Obama shows many signs of favoring socialism and disdaining capitalism. Listing socialist policies and saying ‘these aren't socialist' does not make it so. The Democratic Party media and government leadership promote socialism. But, "socialism" means nothing to American voters who do not understand it or the superiority of capitalism. The base of each party has been debating socialism for years without calling it socialism. “Democratic Party = socialism” is old news for conservatives and liberals alike.
However, there is a “righteous wind” at the back of socialists in the Democratic Party today. A Rasmussen poll in the spring of 2008 proves my point. Americans do not like the term "socialism," but when asked if they favor a specific socialist policy, they favored it-- albeit overwhelmingly on the Democratic side. A Rasmussen commentator concluded that you could have socialism in America as long as you do not call it "socialism." Steve Chapman is proof this is true when he calls "cap and trade" a “reasonable” policy. Rep. Maxine Waters is more proof.
Let us review what Rep. Maxine Waters said to the president of Shell Oil during a House hearing early this spring: “And guess what this member would be all about? This member would be all about socializing — er, uh. [Pauses for several moments] …. would be about … [pause] … basically … taking over, and the government running all of your companies.”
The statement prompted the Rasmussen poll. Maxine Waters and other Democratic Party members in Congress know exactly what they are doing even if they talk too much about it sometimes. It is unreasonable to grant the left a pass on their destructive actions, much less their wicked spoken intentions. Every anti-free market regulation and legislation furthers socialism in the USA and lowers the standard of living of the American people.
But, say so out loud and you are an "idiot” --if you're Republican-- or an embarrassing “gaffe machine” --if you are a Democrat.
PBS offers a documentary online that explains socialist policies called "Commanding Heights of the Economy." This should be played daily on NBC, ABC, BBC, etc.... It explains how socialism failed in the USSR and in every country it has ever gained a foothold. Today, the socialist policies are advanced as “green” legislation and regulations. Obama-Pelosi-and-Reid are strong advocates of these anti-freedom policies.
Socialist policies are a cancer that, once they have gained a foothold in a country, you cannot rid them from the country. You must wait for socialism to run its course of destruction--ruining lives, blocking opportunity, rewarding criminals, punishing dreams, multiplying injustice, wrecking economic advancement, lowering living standards for the masses and enriching a ruling elite--until socialism inevitably collapses of its own weight. Socialism is responsible for the deaths of more people in the 20th century than was the Holocaust, which began as a socialist movement in Germany.
BTW, I have yet to hear a historical refutation of Rep Broun's statements from anyone. None exist; so Media elites are forced to use the classic response of socialists to any genuine and legitimate criticism. They learned from police states. Call all dissenters 'crazy.' Announce they are mentally ill to silence their voices. They send dissenters to "mental institutions." The left always creates a political climate of intimidation to force the public to accept them. There is no other way human beings will accept enslavement to the government other than through intimidation and deceit.
Chapman compromises when only the threat for name calling exists. Writers like Chapman feel the pressure to conform. News writers feel the need to separate themselves from those "crazy others" before they can openly discuss disastrous socialist policies. But, they don't feel free to call socialist policies socialist. The “crazy others” are not so easily intimidated and deserve the highest praise.
FYI: this election the Democratic Party removed their masks. They had to because Obama is a socialist and ran on a socialist platform. You in the media will not succeed in replacing the mask. Socialist policies called socialism is now part of the national debate.
I would wish you luck except I'm a patriotic American.

Several years ago I met a nephew of George A. Nelson. I had never heard of George A. Nelson at the time, but his nephew informed me that Nelson was the vice presidential candidate on the Socialist ticket with Norman Thomas when the latter ran for president in 1936. The nephew also told me that when Thomas was asked several elections later why he finally quit running for president Thomas responded that FDR had incorporated Thomas's platform in his own. Whereas I have since verified that George Nelson did in fact run for VP on the ticket with Thomas in 1936 I have not verified the quote Nelson's nephew attributed to Thomas. However, here is a similar one from Norman Thomas that I have verified:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."

Like them or don't like them, for better or worse, social security, medicare, welfare, and unemployment compensation are all socialistic programs. In line with Norman Thomas' quote I'm afraid that as we move toward socialism we will simply continue to redefine socialsim as something further to the left than the point we have moved to at the time.

Perhaps I am one who throws around terms like "socialism" too lightly. In the same vain I have sometimes referred to George Bush as a fascist. He in fact is not. However, he has moved us in that direction. And if we had 10 administrations like him in succession I dare say we would find ourselves with a government so far to the right that the typical right winger of today would neither recognize nor condone it.

We should continually review our first principles, and in keeping with this idea I highly recommend Walter E. Williams' article "Evil Concealed by Money" at Creators.com.

Sir;... Socialism is not the problem... We have wide spread socialism, and it is because of the widely spread, garbage, no account, fourth rate socialism we have in this country that we can afford so many super rich...We have capitalism for sure, but it would not be able to exist without mass produced, off the shelf, regimented, by the numbers, one size fitzall socialism in health care, education, retirement, and transportation... We all drive cars that look the same and die too new. We all stand in lines for anything worth having... We all dress the same, wear the same fashions, think the same thoughts, and get them from a common news source selling to the same markets... Now; If Mr. Obama sought out socialist professors I am with him all the way... You can see how this economic meltdown caught so many experts by surprise, and the lesson is, that no one understands a form from the inside out... If the economy is the form, or the government is the form, inside you are blinded by politics, or ambition; but outside, from the outside, you can see it for what it is...Marx gave everyone who wants it a window into capitalism...People like Armand Hammer and Ruppert Murdock rode that knowledge to great fortunes... Anyone could, who has lost their souls...But; again, look at the situation, and think for a moment...We could not all live like the rich, and we cannot all be rich, nor could we survive without socialism to prevent the worst abuses of capitalism that would take all from some, and leave them starving, or dying of disease in the street... It is clear that a land with a government made by WE the PEOPLE, originally holding all the property must be socialist, and a commonwealth...Our socialism, which has always been wide spread, as this country has become more modern, has been called upon to support huge numbers when it was only developed as the need arose, to s erve a public purpose, and was never meant to save the whole society from total destitution... The rich who benefit from the commonwealth refuse to support it... So the socialism we have -is bought by those only slightly better off than those it was designed to help... Of course it is not fair; but the problem is not the socialism from which all know some benefit, but with the fact that the rich own the government and use it to enrich them, and to protect them from taxation... The people can attack socialism all they want, but the fact is, that the few productive working people we have, cannot support the over burden of wealth in this land... If we do not follow the rich into empire, and which will mean ever greater deprivation of wealth and rights for the people, we will have to settle on some limits to wealth, and on the power of wealth to influence government...I think that the spectacle of the rich, who will pay nothing for their own defense or for the needs of government that serves and protects them, having plenty of money to influence government and public opinion is strange to see, and hard to swallow...Thanks...Sweeney

Mr. Chapman is WRONG! Certainly Socialism has been discredited everywhere it has been tried. Certainly Obama knows this, but whether he knows it or not, his belief that government is the solution, not the problem prods him down the primrose path to the Great Experiment that laid waste to Russia and half of Eastern Europe. Of course Obama avoids identifying himself as a Socialist. It would get him nowhere; however, if experience has shown us anything, it has shown us that Government regulations, bailouts, ownership stakes, management, and bureaucracy will lead to Socialism as surely as the night follows the day. Obama and the hard left who own him are well out there on that slippery slope toward totalitarianism. Too bad that Mr. Chapman cannot or will not recognize this. Were he to have lived in the Old West, he would have disregarded those smoke signals, pounding drums, and loud war whoops as the Indians just having a bit of fun, not preparing to attack.
